But...... I was told it was climate change.

Waiting for him to be held on a mental health evaluation, and then to be released again. No such thing in Dem controlled areas as "a threat to self or others" holds :/

can't believe that Yoga pants are acceptable outerwear now.  Soon boys will be wearing sweatpants as a fashion statement..

I don't care what guys wear and I don't like sweatpants, yoga pants for girls are very nice.

@Enrico_sw  did you study maurice merleau-ponty as well?

It is interesting how the philosophies of Sartre, Camus, and Dostoyevski  overlap in their focuses.

I've learnt about him in high school, but not really after that, so I can't say I know much about him. What are his main focuses?

Sartre was popular in the 50s-60s to my understanding.  Then existentialism declined in popularity and was replaced with structuralism.  Prof Dreyfus of MIT/UC Berkeley- an expert on existentialism- doesn't teach Sartre because according to him, "Being and Nothingness" is too flawed and derivative compared to Heidegger.   Dodson describes his importance as his ability to popularize Existentialism for the masses rather than being an innovator in the field.

I did hear that he became a maoist/marxist after that but that could be a career move.  Public intellectuals are for the most part, agenda/fame driven and are unreliable as a source.

I really don't like Sartre. The shit he has defended is awful. He covered the USSR during their worst actions and wars (while everybody knew - at least, those that were willing to know). Maoism is even worse.

Communism killed 80+ million people (famines in Ukraine, people sent to Gulag, massive massacres in Cambodia, etc.) and maoism was particularly deadly (the great leap forward created the great chinese famine... death by famine of 30+ million is terrible). Being a maoist apologist while millions are killed is unforgivable IMHO.

I was not impressed with Nietzche the other day.  His other works are beautifully written but the Genealogy of Morals' first essay has a racist and aggressive rant about the blonde aryans and Jews that sounds like it was plagiarized by Adolf Hitler.

That part about the blond in Genealogy of Morals is trash. It's typical of 19th century lunacies (which continued until the mid 20th century), I don't like that he wrote that shit either. However, if you read the passage entirely, and put it in the context of what he wrote, you'll realize it's not related to nazi-type beliefs (the blonds are not just the germans, it's the greeks, japanese, etc.). He's just using stupid concepts from his century to develop his ideas about vitality (also, his historical references are sometimes incorrect). BTW, Nietzsche despises antisemites, he says they are the lowest of scumbags.

Anyway, I agree that this text is trash, even if I know Nietzsche would've spit in Hitler's face if he had met him. Hitler is the embodiment of resentment, he's everything that Nietzsche hates and despises.

Genealogy is not his best book. I told you: Twilight, Z or Beyond good and evil are much better.

Marx's Capital is basically an economics from the perspective of the employee rather than the capitalist like it is everywhere else.

Marx is interesting. Capital is an economics book that even neoclassical economists can read and enjoy. The thing is that the system he criticizes, even if it's far from perfect, is still much better than communism.

The main issue with capitalism is that it tends to promote "winner takes all" situations (aka monopolies). If you're slightly better than everyone else, you don't just earn slightly more, you end up taking all the market. Also, economies of scale (that exist in nearly all modern industries) tend to create monopolies (what some call "Cournot's dilemma"). That's why you need a regulator (the State) to break the monopolies when it's needed. The USA was at the forefront on antitrust laws, unfortunately, not anymore............. Some US industries (like big tech...) need cleaning!

Another issue is that negative externalities (like screwing up the environment) can't be taken into account in a fully uncontrolled market economy. That's why you need the State here too, though, these type of regulations need to be well dosed if you don't want to end up with an useless bureaucracy.

Modern western society is currently on this lowest level, focused on materialism and sense impressions and having fallen from the ethical and religious mode that had dominated previous centuries.  On the other hand, Nazism and Communism were more like religious/transcendental movements despite having poor morals and (the latter) having poor economic performance.

"Western" societies have no transcendence and today's level of nihilsim/absurdity is pretty high, but I still prefer our society to nazism and communism, because at least we're free and we don't die from starvation.

His main focus is body consciousness-

His work on perception is taught in existential phenomenology along with Heidegger, Sartre, Husseryl, etc.

I am currently listening to this course taught by a french prof connecting the 3 fields:

I finally bought one a couple of weeks ago! This heat wave is alright though, it didn't go up to 40°C like last time. I did some martial arts tonight and it was hot, but bearable (even if that bloody mask doesn't help )

Tank tops and mini skirts are one of the bonuses of heat waves
