Stone was cast for a brief but memorable role in Allen's Stardust Memories (1980), and then had a speaking part a year later in the horror movie Deadly Blessing (1981). When French director Claude Lelouch saw Stone in Stardust Memories, he was so impressed that he cast her in Les Uns et Les Autres (1982). She was only on screen for two minutes and did not appear in the credits. Her next role was in Irreconcilable Differences (1984). Through the rest of the 1980s she appeared in Action Jackson (1988), King Solomon's Mines (1985) and Allan Quatermain and the Lost City of Gold (1987). She also played the wife of Steven Seagal's character in Above the Law (1988). She appeared in an episode of Magnum, P.I. titled "Echoes of the Mind", where she played a love interest of Thomas Magnum (1984).

Her appearance in Total Recall (1990) gave her's career a much-needed jolt. The role that made her a star was that of Catherine Tramell, a brilliant, bisexual serial killer in Basic Instinct (1992). Stone's stardom was such that she received top billing over Gene Hackman, Russell Crowe and Leonardo DiCaprio when cast as a gunslinger for 1995 western The Quick and the Dead.

In 1996, she received a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Dramatic Motion Picture for her role in Casino. She also earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for the role. Stone starred opposite actress Ellen DeGeneres in the 2001 HBO movie If These Walls Could Talk 2. In 2003, she appeared in three episodes from the 8th season of The Practice. For her performances, she received an Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series.

Stone attempted a return to the mainstream with a role in the film Catwoman (2004); however, the film was a critical and commercial flop. After years of litigation, Basic Instinct 2: Risk Addiction was released on March 31, 2006. After earning $3,200,000 in its debut weekend, the movie was declared a bomb. Stone has said that she would love to direct and act in a third Basic Instinct film.

A subsequent film role came in the drama Alpha Dog. In February 2007, Stone found her role as a clinically depressed woman in her latest film, When a Man Falls in the Forest, strangely uplifting, as it challenged what she called "Prozac society".

When she was 14 years old, Loren entered a beauty contest in Naples and, while not winning, was selected as one of the finalists. Later she enrolled in acting class and was selected as an extra in the Mervyn LeRoy film, Quo Vadis, thus launching her career as a motion picture actress.

By the late 1950s, Loren's star had begun to rise in Hollywood, with films such as 1957's Boy on a Dolphin and The Pride and the Passion. Loren became an international film star with a five-picture contract with Paramount Pictures. Among her films at this time: Desire Under the Elms; Houseboat, and Heller in Pink Tights. Loren demonstrated considerable dramatic skills and attracted respect as a dramatic and comedic actress, especially in Italian projects where she could express herself more freely, although she acquired great proficiency in English.

In 1960, Loren's acclaimed performance Two Women earned many awards, including the Cannes, Venice and Berlin Film Festivals' best performance prizes. Her performance was also awarded an Academy Award for Best Actress, the first major Academy Award for a non-English-language performance. During the 1960s, Loren was one of the most popular actresses in the world, and she continued to make films in both the U.S. and Europe, acting with leading male stars. In 1964, her career reached its zenith when she received $1 million to act in The Fall of the Roman Empire.

Among Loren's best-known films of this period are El Cid (1961), The Millionairess (1960), It Started in Naples (1960), Ieri, oggi, domani (1963), Lady L (1965), the 1966 classic Arabesque, and Charlie Chaplin's final film, A Countess from Hong Kong (1967). Some of her most attractive performances include A Breath of Scandal (1960), Madame Sans-Gêne (1962), Heller in Pink Tights (1960) and More Than A Miracle (1967).

She moved into her 40's and 50's with roles in films including the last De Sica movie, The Voyage and A Special Day. In 1980, Loren portrayed herself, as well as her mother, in a made-for-television biopic adaptation of her autobiography.

In her 60s, Loren became selective about choosing her films and ventured into various areas of business. She also made well-received appearances in Ready to Wear and the 1995 comedy Grumpier Old Men. In 1991, Loren received the Academy Honorary Award for her contributions to world cinema and was declared "one of the world cinema's treasures." In 1995, she received the Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Award.
