Why is Richard Gere playing a guy who is suppose to be Japanese?

The last movie I saw was Toy Story 3.

Well, the entire movie is based here in America, so they bypassed the entire Japanese aspect of it. It was inspired by the story of Hachiko, it wasn't really a complete adaptation of the true story.
