June 16, 201311 yr 'I Hadn't Really Loved It': Leonardo DiCaprio Was Originally Unsure About The Great GatsbyLeonardo DiCaprio has admitted that he didn't enjoy the original cinematic version of The Great Gatsby, or the novel itself, until Baz Luhrmann encouraged him to read it again.Leonardo, who plays the lead role of the infamous Jay Gatsby in the updated adaption of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic story, has revealed that when he first read the book and saw a version of the film which saw Robert Redford take the main part, he didn't understand it.The actor confessed to Best Movie: ''I had read The Great Gatsby and seen the Redford film, but to be honest, I hadn't really loved it. I couldn't understand it."But thankfully, renowned director Luhrmann had set his sights on casting the actor for the role of the hopeless romantic in his adaptation, and encouraged him to give Gatsby another try.And when Leo eventually re-read the novel, which was first published in 1925, after Baz landed the rights to make a new film, he suddenly began to love the story after realising what Mr. Gatsby's character stood for."One day Baz left an old copy of the book on my table saying, 'I got the rights to make it a film and I want to do it with you.'
