Thanks Princess for the Oscar article! I agree with the opinions about Leo and his chances. As well as the others chances :)

If you can notice, Leo is the only one who has no major obstacles to winning. Bad movie? Please, there have been thousands of winners in the leading category whose films have not been so well received by the critics

Jeff Bridges: Crazy heart, Kate winslet: The Reader, Sean Penn: Milk, Nicole Kidman: The Hours,...

So, because it's about time, because he deserves and because I said so... He will WIN

The movies from the last year were also sucks... what talk about the "The King's Speech"? Too boring!

Kate Winslet also had better performances before, but ended up winning for "The Reader"... boring, boring. The historic of the Academy shows that is not the movie that makes the winner, is the actor who makes the movie a winner. It's all about the performances.

10 Things 90s Kids Will Have To Explain To Their Children

While most things we experienced as tots in that headiest of eras seems pretty self-explanatory (plaid was everywhere, Leonardo DiCaprio was the molten ball of light around which the solar system turned, and there was no color too bright for your sweatpants) there are some things that will be a bit harder to explain. Here, a primer for when your future children want to know what the hell you were doing with your boxy, multicolored electronics.

This will be quite easy to explain to my children :trout: .

Thanks Nanda for the poll!

Also I agree that just because the movies bad doesn't mean the actor doesn't get nominated. And the movie has had about 65% good reviews, so its not like the film is being branded as awful or anything.

So sad - a few weeks ago, I thought Leo was a lock for nominations but now I'm not so sure :-((. I don't know what changed but maybe the box office tho it doesn't seem to affect Gosling or some of the others - maybe the reviews of the film itself, which is prob. less than 50% positive. It always seems to happen with LEO- but really it's better he win when LOTS of people, including critics, agree that he is the BEST for the year. I don't see that with J Edgar. I know, it seems not fair but I want him to win it when everyone is pulling for him and he is the definitive favorite, not just with Leo fans because I dont wanna here people saying he didn't deserve it, blah blah blah

^Solange: I'd say a majority of the reviews are good. The biggest critics out there actually gave it good reviews (rodger ebert, prominant sites like MSN ect.) So not less than 50% have been good.

I wish it were so but look at Rotten Tomatoes which has most of all reviews around the world - it' s at like 41% positive right now. :yuckky: and while some top critics gave it a good review, some other top reviewers, like TIME mag and like that, gave it bad reviews.

Thanks for Oscar article and more great new pix :)

Solange

Both Jeff Bridges and Forrest Whitaker won BA awards for performances in films that were not BP contenders, so the Academy has bestowed BA wins on actors from non nominated films.

At same time when Kate Winslet won BA for The Reader , the Metacritic rating for The Reader is lower than the Metacritic rating for J Edgar

Plus as Kat pointed out many top critics ( NY Times, L.A. Times, Roger Ebert, Peter Travers, New Yorker ) praised J Edgar , and even when critics found fault with the film as a whole, the vast majority highly praised Leo's performance, so his peformance is not one only held in high esteem by Leo fans. So, yes, the Time reviewer didn't give it a good review, but the Time critic is not held in higher esteem than Turan of L.A Times or Darghis of NY Times, or Roger Ebert , or Denby of New Yorker.

Also. and most importantly, the first real Oscar precursor nominations are those bestowed by the BFCA group of critics, J Edgar's rating at BFCA is 76

Besides if a film can win Oscar BP , as well as, tons of other critical awards yet win no acting awards such as Slumdog Millionaire, why would Leo have to have given his performance in a film that was a critical darling ?

For me it all comes down to the fact that if a Best Actor win meant Best Film and vice versa there wouldn't be two different awards . A Best Actor award represents excellence in performance and that is all I think should be considered when awards nominations or wins: the performance

Also in reference to an actor's chances when his /her film is not a critical darling is addressed by Anne Thompson in her column yesterday after the Spirit and NYC awards were announced

For as she points out being in weak films didn't keep Meryl Streep or Michelle Williams from receiving nods or wins .

Oscar Watch: Weinsteins Boast One Great Pick-Up, Two Great Performances in Weak Movies

It's Oscar season, and Harvey Weinstein is back. He's blogging at HuffPo about how his daughters consider him to be cool, and crowing about "The Artist" in the NYT. Lo and behold, Weinstein's canny pre-Cannes acquisition "The Artist" came out ahead at the New York Film Critics Circle with best picture and director and lead the Indie Spirit field with five nominations, while Meryl Streep won best actress for "The Iron Lady" from the NYFCC and Michelle Williams earned an Indie Spirit actress nod for "My Week with Marilyn."

TWC welcomed the good news after critics divebombed their upcoming Madonna movie "W.E." at fall film festivals. Finally, Weinstein's editing tweaks on "The Iron Lady" and "My Week with Marilyn" managed to squeak both movies by as showcases for great actresses who rise above weak material.

While Weinstein showed his girls "Roman Holiday," the inspiration for "Marilyn," comparing them and touting "Marilyn" as "a movie about making movies" reveals the film's flaws. Yes, Williams delivers a dynamic performance--so strong that we don't mind that she doesn't really resemble Monroe. But beyond riveting performances from her as well as Kenneth Branagh, Judi Dench and Eddie Redmayne, the Simon Curtis movie is schmaltzy and drenched in style and an overbearing score. This film about the love of making movies is schizophrenic, trying to achieve two things at once. Williams digs for the truth of what it meant to be Marilyn, while the film chases after the male fantasy of what it was like to sleep with Marilyn.

Phyllida Lloyd's"The Iron Lady," on the other hand, starts off strong as an inspirational feminist biopic about Margaret Thatcher's astonishing rise to power by sheer will, pluck and determination. She had to hold her own in Parliament, which is tough to do for a male politician, much less a female. But the movie's framing device of old Thatcher flashing back to young Thatcher wears thin; the structure becomes repetitive. Still, Streep shines and deserves all the accolades she gets for the latest in a long string of masterful and entertaining roles.

Finally, credit Weinstein for recognizing that "The Artist" would pop and knowing that he had two great actresses and performances, no matter how weak their vehicles were.

ox: So TRUE, I agree with this comment so much: For me it all comes down to the fact that if a Best Actor win meant Best Film and vice versa there wouldn't be two different awards . A Best Actor award represents excellence in performance and that is all I think should be considered when awards nominations or wins: the performance

Plus: I love how you know so many things in regards to award season, clarify a lot of things for me. thank you for all the info, ox.

Barbie

Glad I can be of help :)

When it comes to Oscars nods/wins, I'm certainly not an Oscar expert, but ever since Leo received nominations for both TD and BD back in 2005/2006 I started paying attention to the world of acting /movie awards.

And in the past 5 years I've come to realize :

1. As I stated yesterday that excellence in performance doesn't always equate to a nomination much less a win.

2. That when it comes to who is nodded or wins there are no set in cement absolutes. Over the years performances and films have won that don't fit the so called usual qualifications for a nod or win.

3. That no one is better at playing the Oscar game than Harvey Weinstein. I well recall last year an interview he gave after the GG. The writer said to him that considering the fact that Social Network had won almost all of the critic group awards , the BFCA award for best film, as well as, the GG award for best film, what did he feel the chances for award glory were for his King's Speech ?

To which Harvey replied, "When the people who actually vote on the Oscars start weighing in let's see who comes out on top . "

And when the Oscar smoke cleared , King's Speech won BP :p :p

Will Leo get an Oscar nod ? Will Leo win an Oscar ? I certainly have no way of knowing, I only know, at this point in time I'm in agreement with By Princess' positive, it ain't over to the fat lady sings attitude :) :) :)

hum, interesting, thanks again ox.

Without Leo news it's so boring, I want something.

I think it's time for Leo to take this award! Cant stand it anymore,it's too much injustice! Leo has done many remarkable roles and amazing movies...what else is missing?A friend among the voting members?Maybe that's it!!

Ryan Gosling has more chances than Leo....Brad Pitt has more chances than Leo...what the hell is going on? At least according to predictions of some critics...that sucks you know? It makes me discouraged because I know how much he deserves it...WE KNOW! Let's hope for the best my friends!

Ok... No news from Gatsby, No news from Durban, No news from anything...

Man! this guy is more missing than Fash from this thread.

Girl! where are you?

From Variety, news about Leo's Appian Way Twilight Zone film

Glad to see rumored Akira and Twilight Zone projects moving forward

'Holmes' scribe tapped for 'Twilight Zone' rewrite

Peckham to tune up tentpole script for Warner Bros., Appian Way

By Justin Kroll

"Invictus" and "Sherlock Holmes" scribe Tony Peckham is in final negotiations to rewrite "The Twilight Zone" for Warner Bros. and Appian Way.

Matt Reeves is set to direct from a script originally penned by Jason Rothenberg.

Warner Bros. is targeting the pic as a tentpole, and unlike the 1983 feature that had four separate storylines, this pic will have one story with elements from the "Twilight Zone" universe.

Leonardo DiCaprio will produce through Appian Way along with his partner Jennifer Davisson Killoran and Michael Ireland.

Peckham has been in the studio's good graces as of late penning scripts such as "Sherlock Holmes," "Invictus" and "The Book of Eli" for WB and is also currently working on Yucatan for the studio and Team Downey.

He is repped by WME and Annoymous Content.

thanks for the news ox.

Hopefully we will get some new pics soon.

By Princess

I see you feel we have to worry more about someone like Pami doing that :p

I have noticed that Pami always seems to be awake when Leo is awake in Sydney and asleep when he is asleep in Sydney; could this mean she is in Sydney ???

Poor Pami! she's not even here to defend herself

Not but seriously, no pics or something. Even Lukas has disappointed me a little because he hasn't posted videos or interesting photos. What people are thinking? That this thread operated by pure hope?

At least Kevin makes me laugh
