Leo’s Doppelganger Drama

In a ruse that’s bizarre enough to belong in a D-grade action flick, Leonardo DiCaprio has hired a body double to help him evade paparazzi while he films The Great Gatsby in Sydney.

The decoy, who is a ‘body guard/actor’, has spent the past few weeks getting driven around town in a luxury limo while wearing Leo’s signature Sydney styling’s (blue jeans, black tee and purple LA Dodgers cap), in an attempt to trick photographers.

Unbelievably, the bait and switch scenario seems to be working, as Leo was not only able to hit up trendy Sydney eatery Sushi E, but also the exclusive King’s Cross club Beach House without being detected.

Sadly though, it seems that the baby-faced actor has gotten caught up in his own hype… On Saturday night he used his doppelganger again - this time in order to attend Baz Luhrmann’s 49th birthday party (which was held at the director’s $10 million Darlinghurst abode). The star-studded event attracted a host of big-name actors, along with DiCaprio’s Gatsby co-star’s Joel Edgerton and Elizabeth Debicki – yet , shockingly, none of them needed body-doubles!

What do you think? Has Leo gotten too big for his boots by hiring a decoy, or is it his right to do whatever he wants in order to protect his privacy?

I had such high expectations that I was worried nothing could live up to them, but I can tell just from that short clip that we're in for some amazing performances, especially from Leo and Dame Judi Dench.

I've read some negative comments about the old age makeup and the accent. I don't know if it's the makeup that's the problem, or they had a hard seeing the beauty that is Leo uglyfied. I'm sure it took a lot of work. I'll reserve judgment until I've seen more. It always takes me time to adjust to seeing a familiar (and beautiful) face aged so much.

As for the accent, I've heard Boston accents before, but I looked up some clips of the real J. Edgar Hoover and his accent and voice sound a little strange to me. I think Leo does a good job of capturing the essence of his voice without making it the distraction it could have been. Here's a clip of Hoover (the real one) from YouTube to compare:

I've also seen Hoover portrayed by Billy Crudup in Public Enemies. It's a good film and his performance was widely praised, but from what I've seen of the real person and the movie J. Edgar, Leo's performance carries more emotion and definitely more authenticity. Compare for yourself:

Leo and Blake in Boston? You never know, but I read through some of the girl's other tweets and it sounds like her dad is a bit of a joker. As far as I know, Leo is still filming Gatsby in Sydney and Blake is still filming Savages in L.A.

It sounds like the tabloids are peeved at Leo because they fell for the bodyguard dressed like him as they were waiting for him to arrive and assault him with their cameras. They should be mad at themselves. There's a lot more to looking like Leo than a baseball cap.

I remember when a small clip was shown earlier, a movie blog person who actually was familiar with Hoover's speech pattern/mannerisms when he gave the actual speech we see Leo giving in film,, said he nailed it.

Just a curious thing that I remember, Leo mention Hoover in Shutter Island. When Teddy/Andrew start to become really angry with the director of the Ashecliffe hospital he said to him that he and Chuck would leave the Island and add something like this: "The Hoover's guys will come to invistigate this case"

And I have a remote memory that he also mention Hoover in another movie but I can't have sure which film, but I if I'am not mistaken is The Aviator?

DiCaprio, Cooper And The Killing's Joel Kinnaman Among The Many Considered For The Man From U.N.C.L.E

The revolving cavalcade of actors who have been, or currently are, attached to Steven Soderbergh’s The Man from U.N.C.L.E is even more diverse and impressive than the ensembles in his completed films. After George Clooney, one of Soderbergh’s favorite collaborators, had to depart from the project due to back problems, the floodgates of casting rumors flew open. Suddenly names like Ryan Gosling, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Alexander Skarsgard were thrown into the mix. Now, The Playlist is reporting this triumvirate of power players is merely the tip of the iceberg.

Apparently now that Clooney is out, reducing the film’s immediate star power, Warner Brothers is pushing Soderbergh to consider big names like Bradley Cooper, Ryan Reynolds, Chris Pine, Christian Bale, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jon Hamm, Russell Crowe, and Robert Pattinson. So basically, the studio is throwing a phone book’s worth of Hollywood A-listers at Steven, hoping something sticks. It doesn’t seem like anyone in this group is being considered based on their appropriateness for the role, which is not going to sit well with Soderbergh, a director who has proven time and time again that he follows his own rules and is not known for compromising his artistic vision.

Case in point, while the studio is throwing all these names at him for the American lead in the film, what is he doing? Casting the second lead Russian counterpart spy. Soderbergh met with Swedish actor Joel Kinnaman from AMC’s The Killing at Comic-Con to discuss the role. Kinnaman is also in the upcoming David Fincher remake The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Kinnaman is phenomenal on The Killing and an inspired choice for the role.

Meanwhile, Michael Fassbender and Ewan McGregor, who both just worked with Soderbergh on Haywire, are also being strongly considered for the American half of the U.N.C.L.E spy duo. While I would prefer Fassbender, either of these actors would be a terrific fit. Both are great actors who have demonstrated a knack for seamlessly integrating themselves into the swinging 60s in which The Man from U.N.C.L.E will be set; Fassbender in X-Men: First Class, McGregor in Down with Love.

It will be interesting to see who actually ends up being cast once the dust cloud of speculation clears and the February 14th start date arrives.

Just last month we got our first look of Leonardo DiCaprio as controversial FBI head J. Edgar Hoover in Clint Eastwood's upcoming biopic and now Warner Bros. has released the trailer that shows Hoover's rise to power and fall from grace in this decades-spanning investigation of one of the most notorious and mysterious characters in American history.

In addition to Naomi Watts as his faithful secretary Helen Gandy and Judi Dench as Hoover's mother, The Social Network eye candy Armie Hammer steps into Clyde Tolson's shoes, Hoover's right-hand-man and rumoured paramour, which the trailer doesn't shy away from with long, sideways glances between the men.

Questions of personal privacy versus public safety seems especially timely in light of recent wire-tapping scandals and the ever-present threat of celeb photo leaks and given that it's Clint Eastwood behind the camera, with a script by Oscar winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, J. Edgar will certainly give people plenty to talk about.
