A HAIRY situation quickly turned humorous for a Sydney jeweller yesterday morning when megawatt movie star Leonardo DiCaprio popped in for a spot of shopping.

The Family Jewels shop owner Kane Kelfkens told Confidential his unsuspecting sales assistant Linda feared the worst when DiCaprio's bodyguards approached the store, with one taking up a position in the doorway to keep watch while the other stood in the shop corner.

"Linda was working on her own and I was next door grabbing a coffee," Kelfkens told Confidential.

"Linda was serving a customer when the two big bodyguards approached. The customer sees what's happening and says, 'This doesn't look good'."

DiCaprio came in wearing a hoodie, cap and dark sunglasses and the sales assistant, failing to recognise The Great Gatsby actor, mistakenly feared a robbery.

"Linda sent the customer next door to get me, thinking the shop is about to be robbed by these guys," chuckled Kelfkens. "By the time I get in there Linda has realised who she was serving and let me know everything was all right."

DiCaprio, in town until December to shoot the Baz Luhrmann flick, was "very friendly" as he browsed, saying he was looking for a gift for his mum Irmelin

He eventually picked out a Nepalese antique necklace set with lapis lazuli and coral worth about $1600 but their car was parked in a clearway and he had to leave quickly..

"So he said he would be back to buy it another day," Kane said. "He was very cool and said he was having a great time in Sydney. He eventually took his sunglasses off."

Great to know that Leo got another victory in their (our) crusade to protect the environment. The sad thing is that you have read people who don't understand why this issue is so important for the protection of the marine ecosystem. Many people don't understand that this achievement belongs to us, but that's okay, the good ones are still the majority. Here in Brazil the Senate is a real battlefield to approve projects for environmental protection (when exist), for protect the Amazon... people don't value this kind of achievements, like this in the U.S.. Life Lessons I've learned from Leonardo DiCaprio

I will say I have watched more than my fair share of Leonardo DiCaprio movies. I understand that there are some who do not consider Leo their cup of tea, yet these people are missing out on some important lessons that can be found within the Leo library. Lessons which certainly would have made my life easier, had I had a nice unknown writer to clue me in. And yes, this article may contain spoilers. If you aren't up to date on Leo's contributions to the world of film, then you may not want to read further.

Lesson 1: Always wear your life jacket on a cruise. This one is rather obvious, and perhaps can be learned without seeing "Titanic".

Lesson 2: Don't kill yourself. She's not really dead. Like lesson 1, this is another lesson that can be gleaned from knowledge of the base material.

Lesson 3: When choosing what should be appropriately boring entertainment for you child to fall asleep to, forego "What's Eating Gilbert Grape". Nine year olds will not fall asleep to this. In fact, they will be so enamored by Leo's stunning transition into a mentally challenged teenager that they will stay up way past their bedtime just to watch Arnie.

Lesson 4: If your date says to you, "This is the story of my life," while you're watching The Basketball Diaries, run. Your 18 year-old hormones are raging and making you believe, falsely, that you, and you alone, can bring out that heart of gold hidden beneath a cold exterior. Your 18 year-old self is an idiot. Do not continue seeing this guy. You have been warned.

Lesson 5: Should you feel the tendrils of paranoia spread over you while watching "Revolutionary Road", you may feel the urge to grope for reassurance from your husband by asking, "That's not gonna be us, is it?" To which he may laugh and say, "No. We're not that bad." This means he'll be leaving your behind in two weeks. Prepare yourself for the blow.

Lesson 6: You are Dolores. Minus that whole child killing thing. I'm not sure any more needs to be said as this one is disturbing enough.

Lesson 7: Now that you realize you are a horrid cross between April Wheeler and Dolores, you may want to consider getting some mental help. Nay, you should definitely get mental help. Probably some drugs to go along with all those doctors.

Lesson 8: Never date anyone who is just like a character that Leonardo DiCaprio has played because it will end badly for you. Unless you're on lesson 1.

Lesson 9: Should you see me sitting alone at a bar, you may want to run in the other direction.

Baz Luhrmann's Epic 'Great Gatsby' Movie Begins Filming

Move over Robert Redford. Here comes Leo DiCaprio, and this time he's not playing a poetic lovelorn punk.

That doesn't mean it won't be punchy, because Romeo and Juliet director Baz Luhrmann is heading up this star-jammed adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby—you know, one of the greatest American novels going, named by the Modern Library as second only to Irish author James Joyce's Modernist masterpiece, Ulysses.

Production on Luhrmann's 3D Gatsby (you read that right—eye-popping three-dee!) just swung into gear, says The Hollywood Reporter, adding that DiCaprio (as Jay Gatsby), Tobey Maguire (as Nick Carraway), Carey Mulligan (as Daisy Buchanan) and others have assembled in Sydney, Australia to begin filming.

Whatever you think of Luhrmann's visually spasmodic, often over-the-top prior films—Strictly Ballroom, Romeo and Juliet, Moulin Rouge, Australia—you can't call him boring. In fact Warner Bros Pictures, which plans to distribute the film, says Luhrmann will "create his own distinctive visual interpretation of the classic story, bringing the period to life in a way that has never been seen before." Well of course it's "never been seen before." Who ever thought the selling point for a contemporary adaptation of Fitzgerald's post-World War I "roaring twenties" and prohibition commentary would turn out to be stuff like the book's "valley of ashes" and "eyes of doctor T. J. Eckleburg" popping out of the screen at us through stereoscopic plastic goggles?

In any event, look for award-winning Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan (as Meyer Wolfsheim) and newcomer Elizabeth Debicki (as Jordan Baker) to join the three above as well as Isla Fisher (as Myrtle Wilson), Jason Clarke (as George Wilson) and Joel Edgerton (as Tom Buchanan).

The whole thing's estimated to cost $125 million, including reports that Luhrmann's shipping in an army of vintage cars from an auto museum in Illinois. The Hollywood Reporter says three of these—a pair of 1929 Duesenbergs and a 1929 Packard, driven by DiCaprio's Gatsby—may be worth around $3 million a piece.

So piles of cash, knockout stars, cutting-edge 3D visuals, all to channel a relatively low-key (plot-wise) American classic. What could possibly go wrong?

Continuing its seeming takeover of the Los Angeles film and music scene, Gucci today announced its sponsorship of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s inaugural Art + Film Gala, taking place at LACMA on November 5. The event will honor Clint Eastwood and John Baldessari with Leonardo DiCaprio and Eva Chow serving as co-chairs. Expect a slew of A-list names to attend as guests of those generous enough to fork over $50,000 or $100,000 for tables. Individual tickets will sell for $5,000 or $10,000, but don’t expect a thousand-person event. The capacity for the tented affair will be an “intimate” 500-600 guests, and proceeds from ticket sales will support LACMA’s initiative to make film more central to the museum’s programs, tres Hollywood.
