  3. BAFTA Awards: ‘Barbie,’ ‘Oppenheimer’ and ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ Lead Longlists Margot Robbie, Emma Stone, Sandra Hüller, Annette Bening, Bradley Cooper, Jeffrey Wright, Cillian Murphy and Leonardo DiCaprio are among the leading performers on the list of potential contenders after the first round of voting, with final nominees set to be unveiled on Jan. 18. “Barbenheimer” keeps making a splash. The British Academy on Friday unveiled the longlists for its 2024 BAFTA Film Awards in all 24 categories, and Greta Gerwig’s pink juggernaut Barbie, Christopher Nolan’s biographical epic Oppenheimer and Martin Scorsese’s Western crime drama Killers of the Flower Moon are leading the pack with 15 mentions each. They are followed by Yorgos Lanthimos’ black-comedy science fantasy Poor Things with 14. Meanwhile, Maestro earned 12 longlists mentions, Saltburn 11, while The Zone of Interest and All of Us Strangers got 10 each. Among the leading actors and actresses featuring on the longlists are such names as Margot Robbie, Emma Stone, Sandra Hüller, Lily Gladstone, Annette Bening, Carey Mulligan, Bradley Cooper, Andrew Scott, Jeffrey Wright, Cillian Murphy, Paul Giamatti, Colman Domingo and Leonardo DiCaprio. The longlists are the result of the first round of voting across all categories. Round 2 of voting kicks off on Friday. 10. Considered as one of the best horror movies in 2023. Well. It was ok. I guess.
  11. ^It's also not necessarily fair to just pull off some numbers and calling it "the worst movie" of the franchise. Because it's not (this honor belongs to part 3 and 4). It is maybe less successful in numbers yes, but you also have to consider the changes cinema has made since the first HG movie entered theatres (or the 2nd part since this one is the most successful) thx to streaming services, peoples lack of capability to watch something longer than a freakin tik tok clip, the aftermath of a pandemic etc. Jennifer Lawrence already was a phenomen back then and so was her HG character Katniss Everdeen. Nowadays Jennifer Lawrence isn't capable to repeat this amount of success herself. Her last movie "No hard feelings" made 88 millions worldwide. Heck, DiCaprios latest oscar vihacle "Killers of the Flower Moon" even failed to bring in the bugdet of 200 million dollars and he's considered being one of the last big living movie stars. Songbirds and Snakes made three times what Lawrence and DiCaprio were capable to pull off this year at the box office. What does your calculation mean for their careers? Are movie stars simply dead? Other reasons for different conditions for Songbirds and Snakes are simple. It couldn't built the same hype. Collins just wrote the book in 2020, the movie was shot 2 years later. A fandom is also evolving it's not simply freezing in time, waiting patiently for the next installment. So people, conditions and expectations, mindsets are different than 10 years ago. It's also a movie about the antagonist Coriolanus Snow. So it's not a story about heros but a villain. Tom Blyth who plays Snow is a complete stranger - he's saying himself after this movie he's capable for the first time for not only choosing several future projects but having the oppurtnity of several projects on his plate. I guess it has the same effect for Rachel as an actress. And isn't this the very definition of success in Hollywood for young new faces? (if he's doing smart choices he will continue to land on top in the future) I mean the Twilight saga pulled of some very impressive numbers too (same for the books). Is it considered a good franchise though? LOL However paramount didn't even expect Songbirds and Snakes being nearwhere a hit. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes May Have Arrived Too Late to Succeed The Hunger Games Prequel Box Office Prediction: Will It Flop or Succeed? The Hunger Games Emerges As The Surprise Victor Of 2023's Thanksgiving Box Office “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” Surprises Everyone with Instant Success ‘The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes’ successfully stands on its own Studios Can Learn From the Success of The Hunger Games Prequel Memorable Fandom Moments of 2023 In short: if you like it or not it's considered a box office hit and in Hollywood nearly nothing else matters. 2023 Box Office in Review: A Year Where Filmmakers Flourished and Franchises Failed Lionsgate — $586 million domestic Top films: “John Wick: Chapter 4” ($187.1 million domestic/$432 million worldwide); “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” ($160.6 million domestic/$322 million worldwide as of Jan. 1) Biggest busts: “Expend4bles” ($16.7 million domestic/$51.1 million worldwide); “Silent Night” ($7.9 million domestic/$9.7 million worldwide) With its strategy of keeping production costs down and selling international theatrical rights to overseas distributors, Lionsgate does business in a much different way than the big legacy studios. That resulted in a year that didn’t light up the charts but allowed for a low-risk/high-reward approach to the post-COVID box office. Though they were both well-received by critics and core audiences, “Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret” and “Joy Ride” never got traction with a wider audience and didn’t gross more than $20 million domestic. Then there was “Expend4bles,” a panned action sequel that grossed $16.7 million, a huge drop from the $103 million the first “Expendables” made in 2010. But Lionsgate scored huge victories in reviving franchises that seemed played out. Though it didn’t reach the heights of its early 2010s heyday, the “Hunger Games” prequel “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” legged out to $313 million worldwide against a $100 million budget, while “John Wick: Chapter 4” went even further, to a series-high $432 million. The low-budget “Saw X” rode unusually high critics’ reviews to a $53 million domestic and $109 million global run. Combine that with continued secondary support from faith-based partners Kingdom Story Company — which had a low-budget success with “Jesus Revolution” — and Lionsgate is finding stability in a turbulent period. @Handsomest_Spinja rottentomatoes isn't even accurate. Movies (especially disney) paying for good reviews there.
  12. Doesn't have to mean anything but they got the last years winner Brendan Fraser right.
  13. Lily also won in North Carolina: https://awardswatch.com/north-carolina-film-critics-association-ncfca-awards-oppenheimer-wins-10/ Runner up in Florida: http://www.centralflcritics.com/p/2023.html No more wins for KOTFM at both.
  14. ^she just had a massive blockbuster success (it's still running what means it will even gross more money) - based on a earlier even more successful franchise I'm aware of it but still I don't think the general audience cares for any of this overbloated internet hate.
  15. ^Well that went quick. Poor Mickey already gettin slaughtered LOL
  16. Looks terrible but I still have some hopes for this movie.
  17. Readers’ Poll Results — The Best Films of 2023 Over 350 lists were gathered for our annual readers’ poll. I want thank everyone who participated. This was a lot of fun to work on. I’m not surprised by the top two (Nolan and Scorsese), which might mirror my own list, but you’re all major ‘Holdovers’ fans. You also have massive love for Ari Aster’s polarizing “Beau is Afraid.” Check out “Dream Scenario” at #14 — I didn’t expect that. Obviously, some films have only been in theaters for a few weeks, so titles like “Poor Things” (#6) and “The Iron Claw” (#15) would have most likely fared better if I had waited a few weeks to conduct the poll. Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” did not do as well as I expected, it finished 23rd. When compared to the critics’ tally — it’s currently the fifth most listed film of 2023 — it’s quite clear that our readers don’t share the same amount of love for Gerwig’s film as critics do. Results — 1) Oppenheimer (81 votes) 2) Killers of the Flower Moon (68) 3) The Holdovers (58) 4) Anatomy of A Fall (53) 5) May December (49) 6) Poor Things (48) 7) Past Lives (47) 8 )The Boy and the Heron (42) 9) Beau is Afraid (41) 10) The Zone of Interest (39) 11) The Killer (31) 12) Asteroid City (30) 13) Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (29) 14) Dream Scenario (27) 15) The Iron Claw (23) 16) Maestro (23) 17) How to Blowup A Pipeline (21) 18) Fallen Leaves (21) 19) All Of Us Strangers (19) 20) Saltburn (19) 21) Godzilla Minus One (18) 22) As Bestas (16) 23) Barbie (16) 24) Passages (16) 25) Pacifiction (15) 26) Perfect Days (14) 27) Blackberry (14) 28) Talk to Me (14) 29) John Wick 4 (12) 30) The Taste of Things (11) I went through the movies and it's not much I actually watched I have to admit: Oppenheimer, KOTFM, Maestro, Saltburn and Barbie... that's it 😄 On my watchlist: The Holdovers, Anatomy of a Fall, May December, Poor Things (even though I HATED the trailer too much weirdness for me LOL), Past Lives*, The Iron Claw, How to Blowup A Pipeline*, All Of Us Strangers, Godzilla Minus One, Passages, Talk to Me*, The Taste of Things (*3 of all movies are actually available in germany at this point) not sure: The Killer, Beau is Afraid, The Zone of Interest, Dream Scenario (even though I prefer Nicolas Cage over Phoenix and especially Fassbender any day) Also THIS In case you wonder what Leo smells like Cool Girl Candles has the answer https://www.coolgirlcandles.com/products/this-smells-like-leonardo-dicaprio-candle?_pos=1&_sid=670de48b4&_ss=r
