How frustrating for some people, their PR team (or Chrissy Teigen's pr team) must have JUST pushed for that "omg who will be on the cover? does anybody kno?!! Is it Chrissy Teigen?!" story in the NY daily, lol.

Jeezus that photochop, it doesn't even look like her body, lol. I like that Chrissy Teigen said in her reddit AMA that SI did minimal airbrushing. In the past few years they've been as bad or worse than Playboy in terms of abusing the blur tool. It's not even well done in a lot of cases... wtf, SI?

I still don't quite understand the Marloes thing, either. She's of course very pretty (she's a model after all) but her face looks vaguely skeletal to me, like a poor man's Brooklyn Decker, and her body is not very ermm... shapely? Girls like Nina Agdal are extremely lean but still have nice curves to them, but Marloes just looks like another skinny model that I couldn't pick out of a lineup. However she's very popular here so I'm going to assume that I'm missing something I shouldn't be.

I think SI/SE will be around in some incarnation for a long while, it's a very recognizable brand. The SE in particular has an advantage because it's a yearly publication instead of monthly. I think everybody knows that things will have to move digital, as they already are. The problem is that mags and newspapers haven't found a great way to make money online. When there are big bucks at stake for large corporations, people tend to get creative, so I can see a solution forming eventually. But yeah, they better move fast, because magazines are already outdated and people are moving toward self published, self made fame. Look at Jen Selter, who is just some chick on instagram and already more famous than a lot of SI models...

Sorry to detract from 2324lebron's awesome updates (JEEEEEEEEEEZ lady, that body, that face) but I find this stuff really interesting from a marketing perspective, lol. Kate Upton is NOT "yesterday's news," she's the first model to become this big a name in years. She is massively popular and isn't going anywhere anytime soon. I also don't think Emily's role in Gone Girl should be misconstrued as just "the mistress." She's playing Andie, and if the film is at all true to the novel, the character isn't just eye candy and plays a pivotal role in the story. With Fincher directing, it has a more than decent chance of being both critically acclaimed and a box office hit. The catch is that that movie isn't coming out until, what, November? That's more than 6 months after SI would benefit from Emrata's coming press blitzes. On the other hand, yeah, The Other Woman will almost surely blow, but it's being released in April, only a couple months after SI's release. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the movie's April release date was set with Kate's inevitable SI publicity in mind - both Fox and SI have something to gain from more Upton in the media. On top of that, she'll be playing a character that might be bland, but nonetheless very lovable to a bunch of different demographics... whereas Emily's character is 1) smaller, and 2) flawed and complex. Kate's boobs guarantee male interest, but she's wisely being played to a broader, more female audience, ensuring she's able to branch out the Upton "brand" and take on a mogul role once she's 30+, a la Tyra or Heidi. Em will continue to win herself points with the arthouse crowd and I personally find her (and her career) more interesting, but Kate is a mainstream juggernaut. For a dying industry that desperately needs to sell copies to stay relevant, which one would you pick? Anyway.. boobs are cool

Yes, normally any mag's "sexiest ___ of the year!" title is BS, but this was an actual poll from readers that spanned a couple weeks at least, I think. However, the poll really doesn't mean much, since I'm pretty sure Sara Jean Underwood won a year or two ago and she's hardly more popular than either Kate Upton or Jennifer Lawrence. slowen, Emily is probably my fave model at the moment and I would be delighted to see her on any cover, but I think you may be wishfully thinking. Emily just doesn't have the fame, or more importantly the broad appeal of Kate Upton. She is not nearly as well-matched to SI's brand: she's done full frontal nudity, she's short, her name is hard to pronounce, her face is unusual, she wears "directional" clothes, isn't nearly as involved with sports, doesn't at all have a "girl next door" quality, she's a newbie... the list could go on. Even if their fame levels were equal, KU would still crush her in terms of matching the image SI has cultivated for 50 years now. Combined with the fact that this is a huge anniversary issue, KU's spacewalk will be on the cover, period.

i totally forgot about that for the 50th issue I'd say they would want a all American woman on the cover. No disrespect to the non-Americans but this is huge it needs to be guaranteed to sell like crazy as you said. Definitely. I can't think of any model in the past 10 years who ticks as many boxes as Kate does. Sporty, all-American, likable and approachable, dating an athlete. On top of that, I don't see why they'd pass up the opportunity to christen her with the same honours they've given their other top models (ie, three consecutive covers; in fact, I'd look for her to get the 2015 cover, too). I mean, she's already as big or bigger than models like Christie Brinkley... why give it to them but not their new star? Would almost seem suspicious. What will be interesting to see is how SI (and everyone) adjusts when print magazines are obsolete in less than 10 years and the idea of a "cover" no longer makes any sense. This is especially true for mags like SI, whose target demographic cares less and less about who gets the cover because they can just DL the pics. Even now, with the publicity spike of a famous girl like Kate, the idea of a cover reveal seems increasingly tired and glossed over on the more "bro-centric" corners of the web. They don't seem to care that Kate's on the cover, they mostly care that there's new content of Kate Upton.

Say whaaat? I like her a lot but she hasn't got a chance in hell, IMO. She is way too artsy/hipster/naked to be a real face for SI. I'd rather see her go on to do a bunch more David Fincher movies, anyway...

It's shocking to see her dressed down with dark hair! I definitely prefer her blonde, but she's a great actress so I hope we see her doing the chameleon thing a lot more!

Facially she looks stunning there, plus dat body, and I really like her style. At the same time, sometimes I wish she would wear something with more colour or variation, to make her stand out a little more. I doubt she has a stylist at this point, right? She looked incredible at that Golden Globes party and I wish we got to see her more often in clothes that aren't dark and sort of edgy. I want her to shock me and come out in a really girly Elie Saab, or maybe something prim and elegant. Then again, I've never seen someone's career progress quite like hers and she comes from an unusual background and seems like an unusual girl. So maybe she knows what she's doing and will prove me an idiot (i'd like that).

Sorry for the shitty first contribution, but I've been lurking this board for almost a year and have followed this thread really closely, and I just have to ask: is there some sort of prohibition against negative opinions on Kate Upton specifically? I've seen people who appear to be mods make repeated comments about other models, both underhanded and overt, but it seems like you can't say anything negative about Upton without a very swift scolding. I understand people can be pointlessly nasty about that particular model, but the moderation still seems pretty uneven.
