  7. This is my favorite photo of Polina and also one of my all-time favorite portraits. Btw, there is also an interesting story behind this shoot, that's what Hellin Kay wrote in her blog about it: "This is a photo from Polina Kouklina‘s first shoot for a fashion publication (Russian ELLE to be exact). I photographed her in Moscow for it in 2001 and she went on to become a working model in Paris, Milan and New York just a couple of years after this shoot. I repeatedly told her Russian “mother agency” (an ironic term if ever there was one…) that I didn’t want to shoot girls under the age of 16 and when I saw her at a casting they told me she was 16. On set she told me she was 14 and by the middle of the shoot I found out she was actually 13. Her real mother, if I remember correctly, did not want to send Polina to Japan as her agency suggested, when she was 13 or 14 so they waited a couple of years. Obviously, Polina was never in any danger working with me, but I was uncomfortable shooting girls under a certain age when our industry is based on selling clothes off the bodies of women (or essentially, young girls)". I believe if Polina was 13, they must've been shooting no later than June 2000. source
  8. I've been looking for this editorial for months! I knew it was published in ELLE Russia, but didn't know what issue exactly. I had to buy almost all issues for a couple of years to have finally found it; but I was so freaking happy when I opened a mag and saw Polina's adorable face ELLE Russia February 2001 "Альтернативный маршрут" / "Alternative Route" Photographer: Hellin Kay Fashion Editor: Maria Ryzhikova Hair & make-up: Aleksey Sychev
