  3. There is a story about this, maybe it's true or maybe it's one of those stories that is told so many times people assume it's true. The US spent large amounts of money to make a pen that could write in space because regular pens didn't work without gravity. The USSR used pencils. Maybe so. I think it was assumed by most countries of the West that the USSR had significant resources, and most were surprised when the USSR fell and it was discovered they didn't.
  4. Good point. I disagree with people who say you have to beat China (or some variation). China already won. Of course, it's more complicated than that, but the simple version is quicker and easier.
  5. You might be denying Russia (Putin) some of the credit they deserve. Their bots are a significant source of false information online which helps create and sustain the divide. Putin's KGB training in practice.

  8. ^ Good advice in there. That kind of thing is rarely read, though.

  10. I think @Stromboli1 would like her but he doesn't like the name Chandler. Did I remember that correctly?
  11. She should be more than popular, she should be a star. Give her all the jobs.
  12. In disaster/alien movies there is almost always a moment when the characters realize something bad is about to happen and some version of these two lines follow: "Who do we call?" "Everyone." It's very predictable and sounds ridiculous, but if they don't have it the movie is missing something. Makes me smile every time.
  13. ^ Thought so, it makes a big difference. Tone is so important, and that's nearly impossible to implement while reading.
  14. Are you talking about discussions with people in-person? I ask because I find it easier for things to remain civil in those situations than online, especially with people you speak with regularly.
  15. I believe space exploration is important for human advancement, in the same way that exploration has always been important throughout human history.
  16. It's okay either way. I think it's a good thing to admit I can be wrong. I would make a bad con-artist. One of the ways they work is to never admit you are wrong.
  17. ^ Oh no, you used my words against me.

  19. ^ Lucky for me, I don't get pissed off. But that is a good rule.
  20. Quoting myself because I thought of a different way to say what i was thinking. It would be great if people could have conversations about ideas that didn't involve politics, but it doesn't happen. And once politics is involved, it becomes about winning and any chance at a real conversation is over. Extra thought: This is why politicians attack each other instead of trying to solve problems, they want to win (the argument, an election, etc.). Maybe there was a time when politicians were helpful, but it's hard to see significant usefulness now. Unfortunately, there is no realistic replacement for them.
  21. That has not been my personal experience, both the far left and far right are quick to view things that way. It's either agree with me or you are attacking me. I think this can be true, when someone enters a conversation with an open mind. I think that's rare and that people enter a conversation with the intent to fight. I think the open-minded are more likely to avoid the conversation if they assume it will be pointless. Also, I always assume I'm wrong, so I probably am here as well.
  22. ^ I have known people who were more left (or left-ish) and through life experience they became more right. I have also known people who were more right (or right-ish) and through life experience became more left. I don't know how common that is, but it definitely happens.
  23. ^ Probably the right thought to have, it's what I normally try to do. People having conversations never accomplishes anything. People just state their point and ignore the other's side and it's a waste of time. I tend to be somewhere in the middle on most subjects and it's still pointless for me to talk to people. This is because if I don't agree with them, I'm attacked. (And I have been attacked from both sides by being the middle)
