American. . . and, like Brooks Brothers in the Civil War (Union uniforms), Burberry in WWI and WWII, etc. got big boosts from military contracts in WWI and WWII and designed for military functionality versus aesthetically pleasing form, starting with the original Wellington boots (named after the good ol' Duke who gave Napoleon a whuppin' at Waterloo). The Royal Warrants held by Hunter, Burberry, etc. can be given by any one in the Royal Family. . . after five years. So instead of Land Rovers and Carr's water crackers, Duke William and Duchess Kate of Cambridge could endorse such modern items as IPads, and Apple could feature the Royal Seals on all of its marketing.
