Listening to Adriana and Alessandra talk is so annoying. I'm so glad they have girls like Marisa and Miranda and even Karolina who can speak properly and don't have annoying accents!

It's comments like that that used to (and still do sometimes) make me very insecure about opening my mouth after I moved countries and suddenly had to speak English 24/7. Never mind the fact that I was speaking a foreign language relatively well - no, what mattered was that I wasn't speaking it perfectly and never have been able to get rid of my damned accent. I am a lot quieter in English company than back home, because of people saying stuff like that to me. It makes me hesitant to open my mouth even when I realize how ridiculous that is. Maybe you find it annoying and just wanted to share, but it can still be kinda hurtful to anyone for whom English is a second language.

Dutch accents are quite cute! (Like Doutzen's accent!) I just can't stand the Brazilian accent, for the most part.

What strikes me as odd is that Gisele is a lot better than Ale, and Ale is still a lot better than Adriana. You'd think that starting from the same point and having been exposed to English for about the same period of time, their mastery of the language would be more or less the same. Yet it seems that Adriana still struggles with basic grammar, while Gisele seems very comfortable expressing her thoughts in very good English.

Yes, but you're presenting it as the cause, I would argue that Gisele's greater understanding of the English language had as an effect that she was more of a spokesmodel for them, whereas Adriana was limited to "soyez belle et taisez-vous" precisely because her English was crappy.

But since this is Marisa's thread, not Gisele's or Adri's, I'll only say that I think status within VS can't have mattered so much because Gisele was always bigger than that as a model while Adri... well, she just never transcended VS, hence she never needed to know English as well, which in turn prevented her star from rising higher.

Why are people complaining about a model's accent? Their accent is part of what makes the models unique etc. Would Irina Shaykhlislamova, Ana Beatriz, Petra or Yamila be the same without their accents?

PS: Sorry if it's a bit offtopic. Marisa is good too.
