Warding off the spotlight

Where's Gemma? For months, rumours that former Australian supermodel Gemma Ward would soon be making her comeback have been falling off

This week, it was speculated she would make a return to Australian Fashion Week but in the front row rather than on the catwalk.

PS hears her modelling comeback may have hit a snag. It is understood Ward had been booked for a major shoot with Vogue Australia, however, the model suddenly pulled out. Editor-in-chief Edwina McCann declined to comment or be drawn on speculation about the Ward shoot - however, the fashion business has been buzzing with gossip that Ward was simply not ''Vogue-ready''.

Last month, Ward's manager at IMG, Danielle Ragenard, hosed down speculation Ward had been ordered to lose weight before the Vogue shoot, one rumour claiming she had been told to ''drop two dress sizes''. Ragenard shot down the rumours but remained evasive about the specifics of Ward's comeback, assuring PS only that her charge would be ''looking spectacular''.

Ward was spotted on the northern beaches in January and was said to be adhering to a strict diet and exercise regimen. The latest rumours claim she has been at a health retreat in Thailand.

In 2004, Ward was at the peak of the cutthroat international modelling game, earning about $4 million a year and the star feature for the biggest names in fashion on the planet. She opted out of the spotlight after the death of boyfriend Heath Ledger in 2008 and the Perth-born beauty, who was discovered when she was just 14, came under incredible scrutiny after she was photographed in 2010 having gained a few pounds.

Once a regular on the Sydney party circuit, she has missed several events she was expected to attend in recent months, including the AACTA Awards and the new Christian Dior boutique opening, further fuelling speculation her comeback was not going to plan.

But with such scrutiny, who could blame her for being a little camera shy?

First picture: Supermodel Gemma Ward poses with her newborn baby girl Naia

Reclusive supermodel Gemma Ward lifted the curtain on her life for a brief moment on Australia Day.
The 26-year-old posed for two photos in Palm Beach, Sydney with her baby girl named Naia - the photos were uploaded by her model friend Amy Fin.
She relocated to Hawaii late last year in preperation for the birth of her child, but is back in Sydney reportedly to visit the family of her partner, 27-year-old model David Letts.
One photo was uploaded on Sunday and the other on Monday, but both featured Ward clad in all black with young Naia stealing the spotlight.
Ward has modeled since the age of 15, and was the youngest person ever to grace the cover the America's Vogue Magazine.
Despite her success, she told The Daily Telegraph in 2011 that she decided to take a break from the public spotlight following the death of then-boyfriend Heath Ledger in 2008.
Since 2008 she's slowed down her modelling career to pursue acting, and met her current partner, David.

The two gave birth to their first child, Naia, in December last year. The baby girl was named after a type of female spirit that presided over bodies of water in Greek Mythology.
2008 was a strong year for Ward; she was nominated for two 'best actress' awards for her role in the Australian film The Black Balloon, and she also starred in the American horror film The Strangers, which grossed over $80 million.
Since then she's had small parts in huge movies, with roles in 2011's Pirates Of The Carribean: On Stranger Tides and 2013's The Great Gatsby.
