They just look shit compared to ten, twenty, even thirty years ago. Part of that is the loss of some older movie techniques that honestly looked better than CGI. Part of it is the "we will fix it in post" trend in which they don't properly get something in camera, decide to fix it in post only then don't do a proper job at that. I recall in the mid-2000s there was news in film magazines that the practical effects industry was rapidly deteriorating / closing shop. So we don't see amazing real life set pieces much anymore.
