this one is nuts!  (2015)

"Sky News has obtained footage of a prolonged gun battle between pro-Russian rebels and Ukrainian government troops in the town of Debaltseve. It was shot by a television crew who were with rebel forces and interviewing a POW when the fighting began."

These milita fighters have poor weapons safety habits.

Any recent footage from Mariupol is surreal to watch. There is nothing left of that city.

It reminds me of WWII era footage of Dresden. Or Great War era pictures of places like Ypres.

This war is basically a small scale version of a conventionally fought WW3 to me.  No other modern war resembles WW2 more than this one.

The Russians have used cluster and thermobarbic ammunition in Mariupol and other cities.  The latter is more effective than convention HE for destroying people in buildings.  The Ukr troops are largely occupying the Steel and Iron mills and their outskirts.  Azov Stal is currently being attacked and bombed.  These are the most fortress-like buildings in the city and I expect to see more use of thermobarbic ammo.

I have heard talk from Russian sources that the Russians army expects to fight the battle for Donbass with firepower leading.  In recent days there has some 300 Russian air force sorties in the salient, which lead to some helicopters and aircraft shot down.   While 40% of the Russian units in Ukraine redeploys, they will start concentrating firepower into the salient.  This makes it important for the Ukr remnants in Mariupol to resist as long as possible as the longer they stall, the more the units and supplies used to attack them can be tied up in the city and not redeployed in the Donbass. However if the Russians firepower kills them then they cannot stall the Russians for long.

The difference between the Puma IFV and the super cheap and crude Russian BMP2/3 (lost in large numbers in the Ukraine) are like night and day, however given how things are playing out in real war all these "features" might end up being of immaterial impact.

From the prices I've seen one of these Pumas cost as much as 15-20 Russian T-72 tanks LOL.

The early moves of the "Donbass campaign" has happened.  The Russians continue to squeeze the Donbass salient concentrically with attacks, largely attacking two small cities on the East and South of the salient.

In the North, the city of Izyum fell to the Russians on 4/1, confirmed by the Ukr general staff.  Before that, they broke into the south, reached the Donets, and constructed bridges.  The 47th Tank division crossed the Donets.  The 3rd Motorized rifle division and 4th Guards Tank Division were part of the Russian withdrawal around Kyiv/Cherniv/Sumy. The two divisions relocated to Izyum and also crossed the donets, attacking and the three divisions created a bridgehead.

On 4/4 they engaged in the first tank to tank battle in the war.

To clarify the positions of units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the enemy is conducting reconnaissance in the area of the village of Barvinkove with the use of UAVs, also trying to restore the bridge over the river Siversky Donets near the city of Izyum. Near the settlement of Brazhkivka, with the help of a tank company tactical group, the enemy conducted reconnaissance by battle, had no success, and retreated to the previously occupied frontiers.

On 4/5 Brazhkivka fell to the Russians.
