August 9, 200915 yr Here's a little Natalia's quotation from Russian Vogue August'08:"I remember how in 2002 Russian Vogue did an article about our wedding. It's been so many years since. At first it was terrifying - a weird lord was taking care of me as if I was a princess. He did such a things sometimes! Once he said something, I don't remember what, but I got offended. And he hugged me so gently and says: 'You are my silly cow'. I was speachless. 'What am I a stupid cow for you?!' It turned out to be an absolutely not offensive expression, like 'my sweet little girl'. I say it myself today.Justin is very restrained in his emotions. As a real british aristocrat as he is, he never let feelings get in the way. I cried a lot because of it when I was pregnant with Lucas. I didn't work and used to wake up later than him. And he always got up at 7 in the morning without any 'Good morning, my love' or a kiss. And he was very surprised why I cried - because he didn't start to love me less, it was just normal for him - and why does one need all these silly tenderness? Or when we fight I yell and calm down. And he stays silent. And I think: why are you silent? You'd better grab me, shake and hit your fist against the table. And Justin just laughs at this. He says, it's very russian. What am I going to do now? I have to go to the british embassy and get my visa. That is very tiring. But it won't be long, because now I am lady Portman".So I guess she did change her last name a while ago?
August 9, 200915 yr You are my silly cow lol i'd be offended by such an expression too, without a knowledge of its true meaning of course
August 10, 200915 yr Candy Lady, thanks for the little excerpt! can you post more (or the whole article for that matter)?
August 10, 200915 yr You are welcome That was the whole article abou Natalia from that magazine, but here's another one, I hope you'll enjoy it Another one interview with Natalia, now from Vogue Russia March'08 A tall girl in a tight-fitting trousers walks into the cafe on the Red Square. She has a multi-colored scarf wrapped around her neck very child-ish like and a cosy woolly hat. She looks around perplexedly. It is Natalia Vodianova. She used to sell fruits at a train station called "Schastlivaya" ['happy' - in engl.] in Nizhny Novgorod. Now she is the most famous russian model with a million-dollar pay checks. A devoted wife of a british lord and a loving mother of three. She has founded the charity foundation to help hundreds of thousands of dollars. And on the top of it she became a star in our magazine for one month. The mother of three children looks like a child herself. And it's weird to hear from her that she never was a child, except until she was 6: "Me, my mother and grandmother lived in Nizhny Novgorod in a 4-room apartment. It was a huge place for that time, like a palace! My mother got married for the second time, we had a happy family". Vodianova spreads her arms wide to show how big their house was then. She speaks quietly and ends up sentences in a higher intonation - very british and frequently forgets russian words. She has a big blue eyes, nice pout and a bit vicious look - a true Lolita. It is no surprise that it was difficult for Grace Coddington to decide to make a first shoot with Natalia 7 years ago: she seemed so young, that she could make only Teen Vogue, but definitely not a 'grown up'magazine. But Coddington did shoot Natalia. And never regretted: this girl's childhood ended up a long time ago. "When my sister Oksana was born the world collided at once. I remember how all friends told my mother to give the ill child away. Mother's husband left us at once - he didn't want to have an invalid child. Grandmother and grandfather prefered to live separately. Me, my mother and sister were left absolutely alone. We had nothing but the four walls and a couch, we had to get a credit to buy a table. I was very scared, but at the same time excited - because now me and my mom were like best friends! We used to survive in a cruel world together". She had her little joys even at that time. She loved to dress up - used to take her grandmother's curtains and make mini-skirts of them. Grandmother was furious and teachers repeatedly sent Natalia out of the class for such and inappropriate looks. "I appeared in another dress and my grandma looked at me suspiciously and said: 'The fabric seems to be oddly familiar!' Obviously I didn't know how to cut and sew, so everything was made awfully". But a provocatively dressed Vodianova was discovered by a scout of her local model agency and right from her fruit selling stall she went to Moscow for a casting by french agency Viva. And in a few months she went to Paris. In a 4 upcoming years she made advertising commercials for Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs, Gucci, L'Oreal. In Septemer 2002 she appeared at 19 fashion shows during NY Fashion Week. And when she turned 20 she signed her famous contract with Calvin Klein, and earned more than all her predecessors, including Kate Moss. Vodianova says that is just seems that her career was so fast. It was actually scary for her to be in a foreign country. On one of the parties fight after she came to Paris Vodianova met Csavie, a doctor, to whom she still recalls as one of the most important person in her life. It was he who helped a scared girl from Russia to stop being 'russian' - which ment to stop being scared of everything and get rid of anger. "At first I was about to get offended by Csavie. But then I thought and decided that he was right. Many girls didn't know the language like me, but they were shy and hided, whereas I acted like a monkey - smiled all the time and tried to explain myself by gestures. But that 'russian' anger still sometimes wakes up inside me, but I fight it!" In her new european life Natalia had to fight not only anger. "I am lucky that I don't gain weight - because I was totally keen on the food at first. It was absurd: while I was having a breakfast, I was thinking about my lunch, during lunch - about my dinner. Then I calmed down". However Vodianova still has some good russian habits. She claims she's a pro at making "schi" [a soup with sauerkraut and meat or chicken] "My husband and I bring home from Russia honey and "varen'e" [russian jam] - we buy them from old ladies at train stations. Justin loves my schi. And vodka, of course!" When Natalia speaks about her husband, her cheeks blush, eyes are shining, and, though he is not around, she starts to flirt a little. That is how a woman in love behaves. "So what Justin does? He is an artist, isn't he?" "Justin is very talented, he has to make a career! We are young and have time to switch our roles: he'll be a star and I'll follow him around the world". Natalia met a hereditary lord Justin Portman at a party soon after she came to Paris. She absolutely didn't like him at first, although he started to romance her right away. Vodianova tried to resist vapidly, but she could do it only for a couple days. And in a few months lord was bringing her home to meet his parents. Natalia always wears a little gold stamp on her little finger. "This is a family ring, Justin's mother gave it to me. See the engraving? It says '1st of September 1930' - Justin's grandfather gave it to his grandmother when Justin's father was born. I never take off this ring". British aristocrats were completely melted by Natalia when she gave birth to her daughter Neva - during last three generations in Justin's family there were 27 boys and only 2 girls. "Where does such an extrordinary name come from?" "We were sitting with our Russian friends and discussing how to name our daughter. And Justin said: 'That would be great if the name was related to Russia! You have so many rivers - Oka, Volga, isn't there any beautiful name?' And it came to my mind right away: Neva!" "You have three kids, and every time after giving birth you went back to the runway in less than a month. Is that your desire or a need?" "When kids are very little it is easy to travel with them - you put them in a bag and go. I use to take my eldest one, Lucas, to every show and castings. But I used to work a lot then, and finally I had to give him to nanny. It was such a stress for me that I even got sick. Now it seems awful to me, but I even tried to see him less, so that it didn't hurt this much. It was not a feeling of guilt, it was nearly a physical pain of staying away from your child. I can't go back in time. Lucas might me a little too mature and wise for a child his age. But we have a very special, close relationships with him. And I know for sure that he will never judge me". Lucas is 6 now, Neva is almost 2 and the little Viten'ka [a kind version of name Viktor] was born not so long ago - he's just 6 months. Vodianova still does shows, but she says that now she doesn't do a quarter part of the work she used do five years ago. Now she can afford herself to choose. She more often pays penalties for skipping work and stays with her children. And for Russian children she builds playgrounds in small towns. "When Beslan tragedy happened Justin and I were in Moscow. We were watching the news all the time. That night we flew back to New York, and I woke him up on a plane and said that I have to do something. I didn't have enough connections at that time to make a charity foundation. And than I created the Naked Heart Foundation. Playgrounds are not food or medicine, but children need more than that!" When Vodianova speaks about her foundation, her eyes are full of tears and her voice is weak. It's no act. Every time she remembers her own childhood. A years in pain for her sister. A feeling that she won't have a chance to get somewhere further from her street D'yakonova in Nizhny Novgorod. Now Natalia reads the biography of Ekaterina the Great and poems by Esenin - "not to forget Russian language". She plans to learn how to do horseback riding - Justin gave her a horse some time ago. At home she prefers to wear comfortable loose clothes - t-shirts, socks and her husband's shirts. She loves pickles and has a dream to learn how to make them. She thinks that she's nothing without her husband. She says, that she'd love to take time to do her education, to sit in a country house on a couch and read books, but she has no right to do that - she has to thank her destiny for giving her so much. It seems that Vodianova's destiny is careful about her. And must give her even more.
