Not only does it give the b'day person the chance to spend it on anything s/he wants (or save it up), it also says to the recipient "I care about you enough to understand that you want to choose your own b'day present, and not be stuck with the plastic Barbie beach house I bought for you that you outgrew 15 years ago" Not only that, but we as the bithday gift-givers don't have to spend time thinking about and buying presents The moral of this story: Give cash, not pressies.
