Looks like viewers at Comic Con got to see some clips from The Great Gatsby !

A Peek at Baz Luhrman's Great Gatsby in Sumptuous 3D, Dreamy Leonardo DiCaprio

By Sharon Waxman

Writer-director Baz Luhrmann has reimagined "The Great Gatsby," F. Scott Fitzgerald's iconic American novel, but this time it's in 3D, taking viewers for a sumptious ride into the past.

Here is Leonardo DiCaprio as the beautiful and shallow Jay Gatsby. Carey Mulligan in a blonde bob as Daisy (her voice was full of money ) Buchanan. Joel Edgerton as Tom, the jealous husband. And Tobey Maguire, our narrator in a boater hat, walking us through the story again

In Luhrmann's creative hands, "Gatsby" feels like something new. The camera swoops and swoons with the mad, gaiety of flappers dancing at Jay Gatsby's soiree. Maguire practically steps out of the proscenium frame to walk you through Gatsby's mansion.

Luhrmann ("Moulin Rouge") presented the clips via a taped message from New Zealand, where he is completing the film. It was part of Warner Brothers' presentation to CinemaCon movie exhibitors in Las Vegas on Tuesday.

And while the audience of movie exhibitors only saw a selection of scenes, this feels like something special, something that eluded the beautiful-but-distant Hugo and that can't be touched by a 3D Cowboys and Aliens

It feels like Luhrmann has found a way to tell a character-driven, dramatic story using 3D as a true storytelling tool, rather than as a gimmick for visual hype.

There is a tinge of Titanic opulence , and echoes of DiCaprio as a teen in Luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet. The movie has Luhrmann's distinctive stamp all over it, and it's safe to predict that teenage girls will be lining up to see it.

Another commentary on today's Great Gatsby footage

On tape from Australia director Baz Luhrmann said the Warners brass had to convince him to show his “untouched” footage of the holiday release, The Great Gatsby , a rare 3D drama starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Carey Mulligan. As exhibs put glasses on to watch it seems he didn’t have to worry based on the response . This is pure Baz in Moulin Rouge- form delivering a visual style with elaborate costumes and sets that promises a Gatsby like no other, certainly not the still-life 1974 flop starring Robert Redford.
"Also saw ~5 mins of The Great Gatsby raw 3D footage and WOW. Baz has made a beautiful, 3D drama, really enhances the experience. Whoa." — Alex Billington, First Showing
From L.A. Times

The Hobbit" footage was part of a Warner Bros. presentation that also included glimpses of highly anticipated projects like "The Great Gatsby" and "The Dark Knight Rises." Baz Lurhmann sent in a video message from Australia to introduce his 3-D adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald classic, which seems to focus heavily on the romantic relationship between Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan, played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan. Christopher Nolan was on hand to present some brief snippets of the new Batman movie, while Tim Burton brought out surprise guest Johnny Depp to drum up excitement for their "Dark Shadows."

From Variety

Warner Bros. also showed a healthy amount of footage from "The Great Gatsby," which director Baz Luhrmann admitted via a videotaped message he wasn't quite ready to do. Though the several minutes of lavish sets and whirling parties from the 1920s period drama were apparently raw, untouched footage, they largely impressed the CinemaCon crowd with the cinematic use of 3D that immediately drew comparisons to Martin Scorsese's "Hugo."

Well, we know for sure that Jay Gatsby is visually stunning ! :p

Sounds like visually it is quite stunning

From Hollywood Reporter

CinemaCon 2012: Baz Lurhmann Previews 3D Footage of Leonard DiCaprio's Starring Role in 'The Great Gatsby'

The director says that F. Scott Fitzgerald's Jazz Age tale is "more relevant" than ever.

LAS VEGAS -- Director Baz Luhrmann insisted that F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic tale The Great Gatsby, first published in 1925, is "possibly even more relevant [today] than when it was written" as he introduced scenes from his new 3D film version at the CinemaCon exhibitors' convention in Las Vegas

Presenting the footage during the studio's slate presentation Tuesday, Warner Bros. Pictures president Jeff Robinov said that Luhrmann uses 3D in the movie to increase the “emotion, intensity, power” and the “immersive” feel of the drama.

In the debut clips, viewers saw Luhrmann’s use of 3D from the flamboyant style of a party at Jay Gatsby’s mansion to close-ups, including intimate scenes between Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Daisy (Carey Mulligan).

In a videotaped message, Luhrmann said he wanted to show the “spectacle” of what he is aiming to create, introducing a series of “untouched” 3D clips from the film that had not yet been color corrected and whose VFX had not been completed.

Great Gatsby was shot in 3D using Red Epic cameras and 3ality Technica rigs.

Some more comments about the Great Gatsby footage

Changing the tone completely, then, was the preview for Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. Because of the unfinished nature of the footage – it was largely scenes clipped together out of context – it’s a bit hard to give you a recap of exactly what I saw, but I can comment on the presentation. The material kicked off with a party at Gatsby’s mansion, and it took less than a second to recognize Luhrmann’s style, as the frame was filled with depictions of the lavish upperclass life. The video also featured some voice-over narration by Tobey Maguire, who plays Nick Carraway, with lines taken directly from Fitzgerald’s novel (most notably the final lines of the book). Finally, while it could end up changing by the time the movie is released, the footage was played with modern pop music. Considering this is a regular staple of the writer/director’s movies,
