Exclusive: Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” Gets A List Premiere in NYC Despite the SAG Strike

I told you in May from the Cannes Film Festival that Martin Scorsese’s “killers of the Flower Moon” was a masterpiece of filmmaking.

 

Tonight the fully packed house at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall agreed with me, I’m happy to say. When the star studded premiere screening finally finished after three mesmerizing hours, the audience cheered and cheered and stayed through the credits.

 

Among the stars I ran into were Oscar winners Ellen Burstyn and Tim Robbins — not together. Ellen won her Oscar for Scorsese’s “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.” She’s almost 91 and looks as elegant and lithe as always. Robbins and I had a warm reunion — we knew each other in the days of “Bull Durham.” He told me he’s living a lot of the time in London.

 

There was also a nice “Sopranos” reunion of Stevie van Zandt and Michael Imperioli. Rocker David Johansson made a rare appearance, as did Lorne Michaels, Apple genius Eddy Cue, famed Coen Bros. composer Carter Burwell, award winning documentary filmmaker Joe Berlinger with his artist wife, Loren Eiferman, and many members from the Osage tribe in Oklahoma who participated in making the movie. Matthew Broderick and award winning playwright Kenneth Lonergan made it upstairs after the movie to pay their respects to Scorsese at the after party.

 

But there was no Robert De Niro, Leonardo Di Caprio, or Lily Gladstone because of the SAG strike continuing. Scorsese acknowledged them briefly from the stage, saying, “They’re someplace else” and choosing not to expand on the issue.

 

Apple and Paramount went all out to make the “Killers” premiere an event. They know they’ve got a Best Picture winner, and maybe even the winner. Scorsese, 81, is at the top of his game as are his actors and his famous editor, Thelma Schoonmaker, who accepted kudps graciously at the after party.

 

“Killers” opens in theaters on October 20th and it will wait for its time on Apple TV. Schoonmaker implored me to say, “See it on the biggest screen you can, with Dolby if possible!”

Thelma Schoonmaker Says Robert De Niro’s “Greatest Performance” is in ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’

Scorsese/De Niro is one of the those legendary director-actor duos. After 1995’s “Casino,” they didn’t make a film together for the next 24 years, that is until 2019’s “The Irishman.”

Scorsese’s longtime editor, the legendary Thelma Schoonmaker, has witnessed, first-hand, the wonderful De Niro performances: “Raging Bull,” “The King of Comedy,” “Goodfellas,” “Cape Fear,” “Casino.”

However, in an upcoming interview, Schoonmaker says that De Niro’s work in “Killers of the Flower Moon” is his “greatest performance.” Quite the bold statement.

Well, is it? Of course not. It is however maybe De Niro’s best work of the 21st Century. I can’t think of the last time he was this powerful on-screen, it even surpasses his subtly brilliant work in “The Irishman.”

De Niro’s performance as the morally corrupt William Hale is dark, infuriating and, yes, even comedic. The way he manages to portray such a despicable character in such humane fashion is more than enough to justify the raves he’s going to be getting for this performance.

As mentioned, when compared to his incredible work in the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s, De Niro’s 21st Century output has been rather disappointing, I could only come up five :

(1) Killers of the Flower Moon (2) The Irishman (3) Meet the Parents (4) Silver Linings Playbook (5) The Intern.

Am I missing anything else?

 

I'm still not over this movie, good lord what was he thinking? :rofl:

Maybe I'm the only one but I kinda like the fact that this premiere is all about Native culture, artists, and activists instead of actors on the red carpet. I also very much agree with this comment:

 

The easiest and most effective way to combat “mascot syndrome”, in which people see Native Americans as objects of the past, is to show people how vital and rich contemporary Native culture is. This red carpet is full of fashion designers, artists, activists, and the next generation who will carry Osage Nation into the future.

Well, the SAG-Aftra is gonna meet with AMPT next Monday, hopefully they’re gonna make a deal and the strike ends, do you know when are the premieres of KOTFM supposed to happen? Is there a chance that they might happen? And what about London festival that is gonna be on oct 4th? Do you think if the strike ends on Monday Leo could make  it to London festival?

I love that TITANIC is in Ruimys Top 10 of Leos best performances because it's exactly where it belongs. A performance for the ages. I don't care for one minute that he didn't look tortured and traumatized into the camera once. Jack Dawson is free spirited, positive, happy, in love and devoted to save the womans life he fall for and Leo caputered all this beautiful emotions perfectly. Jack Dawson is (next to Prince Eric) the most green flagged romantic movie character of all time and we are in desperate need for more of such characters :heart:

 

But to erase "The Revenant" is a stretch - even for me. Just rewatched the movie not long ago. It's easily one of Leos most impressive performances for me. But I agree he should have won for WOLF. Is anyone ever talking about McConaugheys movie??? I don't even remember the name lol

 

However I can't wait to watch KOTFM and see where I put Leos performance :p

 

Oscars: Leonardo DiCaprio’s Multi-Layered Performance in ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ is One of His Best

Now that I’ve seen most of the major acting performances in contention for the Best Actor Oscar —save for “Napoleon” and “All of Us Strangers” — I’m going to be pulling for either Cillian Murphy or Leonardo DiCaprio to win the Oscar.

I have 11 Best Actor contenders on my predictions list. I can’t see anyone else being added. They are as follows:

Cillian Murphy — “Oppenheimer”
Leonardo DiCaprio — “Killers of the Flower Moon”
Jeffrey Wright — “American Fiction”
Paul Giamatti — “The Holdovers”
Colman Domingo — “Rustin”
Bradley Cooper — “Maestro”
Jamie Foxx — “The Burial”
Nicolas Cage — “Dream Scenario”
Joaquin Phoenix — “Napoleon”
Andrew Scott — “All of Us Strangers”
Teo Yoo — “Past Lives”

It’ll be hard to beat Cillian Murphy. It’s such a tour-de-force performance and he’s practically in every scene of the 3-hour “Oppenheimer.” I’m still thinking about his work as Robert J. Oppenheimer in Nolan’s film. It’s practically flawless work on his part.

DiCaprio’s performance isn’t being talked about enough because, well, he doesn’t have much of a narrative. He already has an Oscar. If quality is actually a factor in winning awards, then DiCaprio’s rich work in ‘Killers’ would have a major shot at Oscar gold.

Whenever the topic of DiCaprio’s acting talents comes into conversation, it’s either he’s overrated or underrated, there’s no in-between. Forget about the star power, or good looks, for a second, there’s no doubt in my mind that DiCaprio is one of the most talented actors of his generation.

Eight years ago, I had listed DiCaprio’s performances for Sasha Stone’s Awards Daily. My ranking has somewhat changed since then, his essential performances are as follows:

(1) The Wolf of Wall Street

(2) The Aviator

(3) Killers of the Flower Moon

(4) What’s Eating Gilbert Grapes?

(5) Catch Me If You Can

(6) Titanic

(7) The Departed

(8) Django Unchained

Dicaprio is astonishing as the useful idiot in “Killers of the Flower Moon.” David Ehrlich believes it’s the best performance of his career, but has he forgotten about “The Wolf of Wall Street”? That’s the performance DiCaprio was born to play.

Regardless, DiCaprio’s work in ‘Killers’ is up there in his top three. In the film, Dicaprio’s Ernest and Lily Gladstone’s Mollie have this completely twisted relationship — the bond between an Osage woman and the white man who murders her entire family. It’s literally that.

And yet, as human nature has a way of doing, Ernest still has this sweet-natured love for Mollie. You almost can’t help but like him as his every move is being controlled by his madcap and greed-loving uncle (played by Robert De Niro).

You don’t even realize the overall impact of Ernest and Mollie’s messed up union until the very end. It’s complex stuff and DiCaprio absolutely nails this role. He’s not a hero nor is he some kind of one-dimensional villain, but rather an unreflective, naive henchman, whose actions inspire revulsion.

Of course, as mentioned, DiCaprio already won an Oscar, but for the wrong film (“The Revenant”). He actually deserves to win for ‘Killers,’ one of the best performances of his career.

Damn, to think Leo's performance in Titanic is better than in The Revenant is beyond me. :ninja:

 

Wow, idk why soo many people despise Leo's performance in The Revenant saying he didn't deserve to win his Oscar for this role. It is because his character couldn't talk much? I think that's exactly what made his performance in this movie soo amazing, but I guess I have a very unpopular opinion...   :wacko:

Historically speaking, performances rise and fall in popularity/ favour. Its one of the things I love so much about movies in general. They never stop living. 
 

When Titanic first came out, Leo was famously snubbed for the role of JD. Many people thought it was a simple and unimpressive performance (everything was nominated including the iceberg but Leo missed out!) but now (26 years on) people feel that what Kate and Leo achieved was central to the films enormous successes.

 

I personally love the Revenant and believe in time, that it will build back up in popularity along with Leo’s truly Oscar worthy performance.

Martin Scorsese Details Working With Leonardo DiCaprio and How He's Matured as an Actor (Exclusive)

'As he changes in life, he's changing on film,' the director told ET.

Martin Scorsese loves working with Leonardo DiCaprio. ET spoke to the famed director at the New York City premiere of his latest film, Killers of the Flower Moon, and he praised the actor for his growth as an actor over the years.

 

"He has range. He keeps growing. He also has a lot of courage," Scorsese told ET. "I know he'll go to places that other people might pull back from... I've been working with him over the years he's been growing as a person. He's maturing from a young kid to a young man. As he changes in life, he's changing on film."

 

The 1920s-set crime drama, which recounts the serial killings of the Osage Nation after oil was discovered on their tribal land, also stars Robert DeNiro, with whom Scorsese has now worked 10 times. "Just hanging around together on the set," Scorsese said, is one of the perks of working with his longtime pal.

 

"For him to take on a character like this, there are friends of mine who saw the film and have known Bob for years... they told me after seeing the film that for the first half hour and 40 minutes they didn't realize it was Bob. And they know him!" Scorsese said with a laugh. "It's hysterical. I said, 'You must be joking.' No!  They thought it was somebody [else]."

 

The film premiered at Cannes in June and received a nine-minute-long standing ovation at the festival. Scorsese noted that he's "very excited by the warm reception" that the movie has received.

 

"I'm very excited about how the film plays tonight and how the word spreads before the picture opens," he said. "I really want [people] to see it on a big screen in a theater if you can."

Martin Scorsese Praises Leonardo DiCaprio’s Maturing & Courage (Exclusive)

On Wednesday night, “Extra’s” Mona Kosar Abdi spoke to famed director Martin Scorsese on the red carpet for the “Killers of the Flower Moon” NYC premiere event.

 

Scorsese opened up about why he wanted to tell the story and about teaming up with Leonardo DiCaprio yet again.

 

Martin commented, “I've been lucky enough to meet him years ago. We worked on ‘Gangs of New York’ and he happened to like my films a lot, especially with Bob De Niro… What happened over the years, we got to trust each other on ‘Aviator’ and then on ‘Departed,’ and after that what began to happen… as he's growing as a young man into an older man… his maturing in reality in life is reflected in his work, and he's maturing in his work.”

 

“I find I can even give more from him because he's got… a lot of courage and incredible amount of talent… He's got the perfect face for cinema,” Scorsese noted. “He doesn't have to say anything, you know, his looks, his eyes look a certain [way]. I know it because we edit the film.”

 

 

Their new film is based on a true story about a Native American massacre over their oil rich land in Oklahoma that led to the formation of the F.B.I. The movie also features a breakout performance from Lily Gladstone as Leo's character Ernest's wife Mollie.

 

Should Gladstone receive an Oscar nomination for her work, as industry buzz predicts, she would become the first Native American woman nominated for Best Actress.

 

As for why it was important to tell the story now, Marty explained, “We don’t want to give a history lesson, a civic lesson, or preach a sermon… I took the story and placed it in the most intimate setting, and we saw it through the lens of a marriage between Mollie and Ernest, which is based on the real story, too.”
