THANK U for all the leo goodies everyone!! :flower:

It annoys me all these reporters saying "but it can't top iron man" when Gatsby made $19.4 and iron man $19.7, it was almost a tie this wkend!!! But i like this article...

In one of the biggest box office surprises in recent months, Baz Luhrmann's "The Great Gatsby" exceeded pre-opening estimates and overcame mixed reviews to gross over $19.4 million on Friday (including Thursday night late shows), nearly equaling the more than $19.7 million that "Iron Man 3" took in for the day.

The total for "Gatsby" topped huge opening Christmas Day numbers for "Les Miserables" and "Django Unchained," despite not being a holiday or school vacation.

From Deadline Hollywood :The Great Gatsby’ Hip-Hops To Big $52M

I love the reports that people are clapping when Leo appears for the first time

There’s more good news at the box office for the start of Summer 2013. Domestic grosses for Warner Bros‘ The Great Gatsby (3,035 theaters) just keep going strong. Big online seller Fandango tells me this female-driven film is heading into Mother’s Day and ticket sales show no signs of flagging across the country from city to heartland. Despite audiences giving it a ‘B’ CinemaScore. In addition to moviegoers showing up dressed in 1930s period costumes, exhibitors are reporting some audiences spontaneously bursting into applause when Leonardo first appears on screen. (When’s the last time that happened?) That’s prompted some Hollywood execs to speculate this is the original Titanic crowd. Warner Bros hopes the Baz Luhrmann-directed, DiCaprio starrer ”perfectly counter-programs” all the May action movies.

Here are Canne's preparation for Gatsby's After - Party ;

Capture_d_e_cran_2013_05_12_a_16_32_45.jpg

The giant structure they screw and bolt for Friday only live that glitter live: the space of an opening ceremony.

It is here that Warner is the prime contractor. Wednesday night, Leonardo DiCaprio and a few hundred VIP will host these places. The dome 42 meters 12 meters 35 in ceiling will host a private party of the film The Great Gatsby.

For now, the envelope of paintings and tubing is still empty, but shots of hundreds of thousands of dollars, it will be here Wednesday night turned into cabaret bling of the Roaring Twenties.

In Cannes, Hollywood had never seen so large. Even when Luc Besson and Bruce Willis had obtained that was erected ... a spaceship at the foot of the palace, the space of a sleepless night, the Croisette offer one of the most memorable "after" the history of the festival

Love the comments about Leo , as well as, the writer pointing out the reason she was called Daisy , so very true about her behavior

DiCaprio works wonders with his tricky role. He’s both enigmatic and painfully human as the title character. Gatsby looks to the manor born and can truly rock a pink pinstripe suit, but DiCaprio lets us see the uncertainty present in the former Jay Gatz's eyes. He's faking the part of the rich playboy, and DiCaprio captures the layers of the illusion beautifully. He even stretches out the vowels when he speaks Gatsby's favorite colloquialism - “old sport”. Gatsby is always trying a little too hard and DiCaprio understands that and makes his character vulnerable and tragic throughout in words as well as deeds.

Tobey Maguire makes for an ideal Carraway, nicely shy and timid in his body language, yet with eyes bursting with desire and awe. Australian Joel Edgerton perfectly suites the insensitive and brutish rich boy Tom, who no matter how refined his wardrobe is or how fussy his mustache is, they cannot hide the fact that he’s a snotty, frat boy who’s never worked a day in his life and acts like everyone is his servant. And Carey Mulligan says more with her hurt eyes than with Daisy’s few lines. She is named so because she’s beautiful, delicate and all too easily bent by the whim of the wind.

From Hollywood Reporter

Box Office Report: 'Great Gatsby' Dazzles With $51.1 Million Opening

The film's outstanding North American opening puts it at No. 2 behind holdover "Iron Man 3," which remained strong in its second weekend, taking in about $74 million.

Proving that an auteur-driven drama can hold its own against an action tentpole, Baz Luhrmann's effervescent The Great Gatsby opened to $51.1 million at the North American box office in a major win for Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures.

Gatsby, outpacing expectations, came in at No. 2 behind holdover Iron Man 3, which took in about $74 million in its second weekend for a domestic cume north of $286 million.

Luhrmann's 3D adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel is easily the Australian director's best opening to date and also reinforces Leonardo DiCaprio's box-office prowess among the female set. The actor, playing the iconic and mysterious Jay Gatsby, stars opposite Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire and Joel Edgerton.

The stellar domestic launch bodes well for Gatsby's international premiere at the Cannes Film Festival's opening night on May 15.

Gatsby cost about $105 million after $85 million in hefty Australian locations subsidies.

From Forbes :Weekend Box Office: 'The Great Gatsby' Opens To $51 Million

The Great Gatsby pulled off something of a coup, earning a shocking $51.1 million this weekend. The Baz Lurhmen 3D adaptation of the classic F. Scott Fitzgerald novel was scheduled in a release slot, the unofficial second weekend of summer, where would-be blockbusters, especially Warner Bros’ would-be blockbusters, go to die badly. The film was scheduled to open on Christmas Day of last year, but was moved into early May, setting off buzz that the would-be Oscar contender was somewhat of a dud. And reviews mostly bore that out, with a mixed-negative critical reaction. With a risky date change, a genuinely cursed release date, and trailers that impressed and repulsed in equal doses (“The Great Gatsby scored to Jay-Z tunes? You speak sorcery!”), there were rumblings that Warner Bros. was in trouble.

But Warner Bros. is not in trouble this weekend. Warner Bros. marketing deserves a real gold star and/or bonuses come Monday. Sure it’s easy to give kudos when a film like The Dark Knight Rises opens to $160 million, but projects like this and/or Magic Mike‘s stunning $37 million debut last summer, show how skilled Warner Bros. can be in terms of selling unconventional pictures and sometimes turning them into blockbusters. And that’s what The Great Gatsby is… a character-driven star vehicle based on a classic 1920′s novel that just opened like a would-be franchise tent pole. The film had the third biggest opening ever for a film that didn’t open at number 01 on its given opening weekend.

Speaking of star-driven, Leonardo DiCaprio is (if there was any doubt) officially a full-blown movie star today. This caps an impressive run which saw the $41 million debut of Shutter Island (also moved several months from its original Oscar-friendly release date to great success), the $62 million debut of Inception, and the $30 million debut of Django Unchained this Christmas. Yes, those were all high-concept movies that people wanted to see with somewhat marquee directors at the helm, but that’s star power today: star + concept. He’s no longer just ‘that guy from Titanic who occasionally works with Martin Scorsese’, but a ‘open it big’ box office draw all on his own. The Great Gatsby played 59% female and 69% over 25

I saw it yesterday and really enjoyed it! I wouldn't say it's the most brilliant movie ever or anything, but it was great fun/pretty/well acted. Also Leo, as per usual, killed it. God he was fantastic. I loved how he balanced not only making Gatsby come across as some big shot but also adding in those secretive/try hard/needing almost creepy ownership and control over his life/loves. YES GOOD. LEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEO BABY.
