A supermodel is an icon. Is someone that everyone knows, inspiring models look up to and also famous for something either good or bad. I think it's a combination of all that's listed.

it's not enough to simply be famous though. most people know Victoria Silvstedt. she's technically a model, and she's really quite famous ... but would anyone consider her a Supermodel?? i certainly hope not. she's a "Glamour Model" or something. a playmate who became famous.

SO, a model should have some measure of fashion success. however, SI or VS can count. my point, i guess, is that Christie Brinkley, Niki Taylor, Elle MacPherson, Heidi Klum, Laetitia Casta, Tyra Banks, etc are always referred to as "Supermodels" ... and i really don't think many people would disagree with that. they ARE supermodels. however, they're simply the more commercial type than Linda, Christy, Naomi, Kate, etc etc. (sure, Tyra had some success as a high fashion model, but even a rabid fan like myself can admit that it's been exaggerated).

if we were comparing it to actors, we could say that Johnny Depp is a real actor's actor, a star with lots of critical acclaim and success. however, Tom Cruise is still certainly a movie star and absolutely more internationally famous. point is that they're both moviestars. one is of the more "indie-cred" ilk, and the other is pure commercial candy. perhaps Johnny would be Kate and Tom would be Gisele? or Tom = Heidi, Tyra, Elle, etc.

Gisele's the queen of them all though. at least in terms of $$$. if you go to Forbes.com right now you can see the latest "Celebrity 100" list. Gisele made $33 MILLION this year. that's actually MORE than Tom Cruise. more than the entire cast of Grey's Anatomy combined. More than any of the Hollywood actresses. 4X more than Kate Moss. 4X more than Heidi Klum. 2X more than Tyra.

I agree..cept Gisele is talented when it comes to modeling! Unlike Tom when it comes to acting. :p

I don't consider Christie Brinkley, Niki Taylor, Elle MacPherson, Heidi Klum, Laetitia Casta, Tyra Banks supermodels though. Neither Heidi... :/

to me supermodels will always and forever be Linda Naomi Claudia Christy & Cindy

Gisele to me though is the super of all supers because she has really had so much success in commercial modeling and HF modeling. (and no im not just being biased) Cindy is often considered this but...in HF she barely made a blimp. She never amounted in the HF industry like Naomi Linda or the other C's did. IMO. She made her mark in commercial modeling. Gisele on the other hand had VS. And you look back at her campaigns and covers she has really done almost everything out there. :| And even more...so to keep that position when the industry just throws and brings new girls out like its nobody's business is even more amazing. To me Gisele will make an even bigger impact (on me) then all these supers did years ago.

And also Linda Evangelista and Cindy Crawford. :)

these supermodels look good with age and it doesnt affect them.

Most of all they arent too much of a bad influence and they are the

type of models with faces to recognise and remember.

Everything Above (and some more...) you can't just have done 1 or 2, not even 3 or 4 areas of modeling,....but ALL aspects of modeling, and preferably year after year too. (In comparisons to what the REAL,original 90's Supermodels conquered anyways) IMO.

very few models today come to mind in that case  They set the standard.

in the words of tigerrouge from tfs: couldn't have said it better myself

"In my eyes, a supermodel was someone who could stride the catwalk, do the cover of Vogue Italia, marry a film star, shoot a swimsuit calendar and sell Pepsi to millions. "

For me it's not important how popular or well known a supermodel is. IMO a supermodel is who is constantly on co covers of famous fashion magazines, has a major contract with some company, walks often in runways and earns a lot.

So I'd say 90's models...

To me, the term "supermodel" applies to a successful much-sought-after model who was:

A)already successful and much-sought-after during the actual supermodel era of the late 80s/early 90s.

and

B)was actually referred to as a "supermodel" during that era.

The term doesn't apply to 90s models who are nowadays referred to as "supermodels".
