i agree. rather than cultivate talent and rely on great models and great photographers, they've devolved into themes, gimmicks, and celebrity worship (not so much the girls but their athlete or musician boyfriends, which is slightly perverse and degrading, as if the women are only worth as much as the men they pull). the south african version is more like what SI used to be. fantastic roster of girls, excellent photography, no (or maybe just less) Barbie-fied photoshopping, no gimmicks like 3-D or touristy backdrops, etc. the cover is picked based on which girl can generate an image worth showing on the cover rather than who she happens to be dating or how internet-famous she may be at the time. i just wish they could exchange budgets! it's a bit interesting because the american version is also publishing this huge retrospective book. i haven't seen it yet in person but from the small previews it seems to focus more on the girls rather than the gimmicks. SI would be better off if the actual issues did that as well.

this is what she's making in the video above. i wonder if it's cast from her own body... and if so, where's THAT video?

they're not done shooting and we haven't identified half of the models, so it's really too early to speculate. just kidding! knowing the lineup won't actually help much this year, as the 50th anniversary theme will dominate. i'd place my money on another multi-girl shoot just like in the 2004 issue and on the 2006 cover. some combination of elle, christie, tyra, cheryl, kathy, heidi, bar, marisa, etc, all crowded around, hoisting up, or <post edited > . this is the easy/expected option; i'd say there's about a 50% chance of a multi-girl "all star" type cover. on that note, my next-best guess would be Yet Another Kate Upton Cover. just a <post edited > (topless but covered, handbra). SI would get press for not even having a swimsuit on the cover of the swimsuit issue. i figure if they use Kate three times in a row, they've got to do something even more press-worthy than going to seven continents. so about a 25% chance of YAKUC. of the other girls, the best bets are nina agdal (12%) or emily didonato (8%). beyond that, it's a pretty weak field, so let's say 5% for everyone else in the world combined. if they pass over Kate, it's almost possible they'd go with a rookie rather than a veteran. of the current veterans, no one else really has a cover-worthy body or enough name recognition for the cover, especially for this big 50th anniversary hype they've created. they've kind of done it to themselves, treating Kate as if she's the only one worth promoting. i'd be interested to see what odds other bellazonians (and lurkers!) would assign.

lisalla is okay but she's in the club with brooklyn, chrissy, and julie as the kind of girl who could dress in drag and have relatively little trouble fitting in with the guys. i'm NOT saying she looks like a man. but rather she looks like she could look like a man. an admittedly fine distinction...

i'm already tired of the anniversary concept, which they've already done twice in the past decade SI is so stuck in it's own past, so deep in a rut it created, i was trying to think of what else they could do to for the anniversary issue. bring back former cover models for a group shot? done it already use current models to recreate famous shots? done it already compile a list of greatest SI models across all the issues? done it already who knows, maybe they haven't quite scraped the bottom of the barrel yet. for a hint of what the magazine should be doing instead, check out the roster of south africa swimsuit. after looking at that, would anyone actually prefer yet another year of the same shoots with the same models plus the incessant retromania of the american issue?
