lazy sunday...spent some time thinking about what more legit odds might look like after that ny daily news article for the cover, i think there's about a small chance of it being a group cover. if it's not a group, though, here are my odds for solo cover girls: kate upton 2:1 emily ratajkowski 2:1 nina agdal 6:1 hannah davis 12:1 other (veteran) 15:1 other (rookie) 20:1 the inset will likely feature either kate or emily, whichever one doesn't get the cover. both girls are such huge selling points that it seems it's inevitable they'll both get some recognition on the cover. would be curious to see what odds others would set.

yeah, could be OK in video but for a still image, i'm not sure it would come across well

not for the cover though, since it's more landscape orientation. i'm not sold on the zero-gravity idea. i just have too much trouble imagining how that could be done well.

i wonder how many of the rookies were announced as casting calls. right now it's 2 out of 4. emily r. and hannah f., yes; gigi and sarah, no.

so 2014 will mark the first time since the concept of rookies was introduced in 1999 that all of the previous year's rookies returned

i know emily's going to be in it. i was talking about the cover. try to resist your knee-jerk response at mocking every post i make. anyway, that kathy ireland reference made me think they're going to have a ton of models in this year's issue. in the first 24 years, SI never had more than 7 models in each issue. for the 25th anniversary, they more than doubled it to 16. in the past decade the number of models has been hovering around 17-20, with around 5-7 rookies. they could be doubling the rookie class this year, so figure 12-15 veterans and maybe 10-14 rookies, they could end up with the most models ever, even before counting the "all-stars".

yes, kate upton is big in terms of popularity. but emily is now as popular as kate was before she got her first cover (see google trends graph below). also, in the last few months esquire readers picked emily, not kate, as their woman of the year (65 to 35 over the megapopular jennifer lawrence). so while kate is vastly more popular and well-known, it could be that SI would opt to have someone whose star is rising rather than go with the most popular girl year after year after year ad infinitum. after all, if they went purely on popularity alone, we'd be sitting around expecting kathy ireland's 26th consecutive cover, as she sold more issues than anyone before her. instead, we got judit masco.

Say whaaat? I like her a lot but she hasn't got a chance in hell, IMO. She is way too artsy/hipster/naked to be a real face for SI. I'd rather see her go on to do a bunch more David Fincher movies, anyway... well, she will be in the magazine, that's for sure. and she's already more popular than all of the girls in last year's issue with the exception of kate upton and irina shayk. more popular than nina, chrissy, alyssa, etc. at this point she's not only more popular than kate upton before her rookie appearance, she's more popular than kate after her rookie appearance. meaning she's just as popular as kate was when she got her first cover. so it's not entirely unlikely (and in fact i think quite likely) that she'll get the cover. remember, esquire readers (with a lot of overlap in demographic with SI swim) picked emily, not kate, as their woman of the year a few months ago. anyway, the news value of having a repeat cover was exhausted last year. the only reason i think it's still questionable is i'm not sure they managed to get any flattering pictures of kate during their zero-gravity shoot. emily already has a body that defies gravity! :brows:

i just can't imagine a zero-gravity shoot going well, regardless of the model.

if i were placing bets, i'd say the cover is between YAKUC or emily ratajkowski. i'm not sure anyone else has more than about a 5% chance. and for those thinking hannah or genevieve or whoever else, remember alyssa miller was their promo girl .

i like that this thread will be 100+ pages before the magazine is even out i don't think anything has been announced for the TV special. there's a separate special coming out for the 50th anniversary retrospective, too
