The media in that regard only does it because they're trying to flatter the model and because it sounds more prestigious to say a "supermodel" is on their show. It's the naive fans of models that have bastardized the term until every girl that's ever stepped on a runway is a supermodel. I can't blame the media when the media barely cares about models.

I agree with ez c and sam12. A model can have been on the cover of every high fashion mag ever, have huge contracts with major brands, and walked every runway, but that's all meaningless toward the title of "supermodel" if the average Joe has no idea who she is.
