Gago and Higuaín to participate in their first Madrid derby

Next Saturday's Madrilenian derby at the Vicente Calderón will be the first for two of Real Madrid's winter signings, Fernando Gago and Gonzalo Higuaín. The cross-town rivalry can be overwhelming for newbies, but the recent arrivals from Argentina have plenty of experience handling the pressure of one of the Superclasicos of world football: Boca Juniors vs. River Plate.

Fernando Gago and Gonzalo Higuaín will experience their first titanic clash of the Spanish capital this weekend when Real Madrid take on Atletico at the Vicente Calderón stadium. There's no question it's a special match for every participant, and the pressure and build up can take its toll on a player, especially when its their first derby.

However, if there's something that Gago and Higuaín are already used to, it's pressure. Both players rose through the ranks of two teams who are involved in one of the most intense and demanding rivalries of world football, none other than Boca-River. Despite their youth, both the midfielder and the forward have already played several matches of such significance, although Fernando Gago was donning Boca's blue-and-yellow and Gonzalo Higuaín was a River Plate Millonario.

Since his Boquense debut in 2004/05, Gago was the Bombonera play-maker until his arrival in Madrid last December. Prior to leaving his former team, Gago played in several Buenos Aires derbies. Perhaps the most important was the Boca-River tie in the 2004 Copa Libertadores semifinals, when the Xeneizes knocked out River's Gallinas in a penalty shootout.

Although he is even younger than Gago, Gonzalo Higuaín also has experience playing in Argentina's Superclasico. In fact, the crowning achievement of Higuaín's brief career was a River-Boca match played at the Estadio Monumental of Buenos Aires. The Madridista's two strikes, one by way of a spectacular backheel, led River to a 3-1 win.

Newbies, but war veterans, Gonzalo Higuaín and Fernando Gago are both anxious to guide their team to victory in another of world football's greatest matchups. They used to be rivals but, now, as teammates, they join forces for one common goal: three points for Real Madrid.
