jkjk Posted October 6, 2019 Posted October 6, 2019 ^ There are many films still to be released, but he will likely receive all the nominations. Quote

He lost 50+ lbs for that role and really crushed those neurological disorders he was having. Kinda surprised that it only got 69% on RT https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/joker_2019 Quote

jkjk Posted October 10, 2019 Posted October 10, 2019 ^ It's possible to hear anything, maybe true, maybe not. Guessing at people's motives is impossible really. I read a few reviews and two common themes among the negative reviews were: 1. Concern that the movie would encourage violence, with some mentioning the shooting at a showing of The Dark Knight. I think that concern doesn't make a lot of sense, but it definitely shouldn't impact whether a reviewer thinks the movie is good or not. 3. Saying for example about the psychological aspects of the movie, the movie tried to be Taxi Driver, but failed. Most movies fail at being Taxi Driver, it's really good. 2. A more realistic complaint I saw was that it was nothing new. It's true that the movie is not groundbreaking, but how many movies are. Doing something complete new is essentially impossible. Quote
Cult Icon Posted October 10, 2019 Author Posted October 10, 2019 well, political motivations are extremely easy to pick out in reviews when they use it as a soapbox to complain about external issues- keep in mind that I haven't read any reviews at all and plan on seeing this fresh. Quote
jkjk Posted October 10, 2019 Posted October 10, 2019 ^ I always try to see things fresh. I avoid reading individual reviews and, if possible, avoid seeing the rotten tomatoes or metacritic aggregate numbers. Quote

Book reviews are the opposite- they tend to under-analyze the product. Quote

If the reports are to be believed, we almost ended up with Leonardo DiCaprio instead. DiCaprio was never attached to this project. They are just using his name like always to make a project more interesting/more prestige/more talks or whatever. Quote

Be that as it may, I'm still holding out hope that the rumours of DiCaprio starring in a Stan Lee biopic were true, I'd like to see him doing a bunch of cameos in superhero movies. Or better yet, he could play Jared Leto in a Suicide Squad biopic. When asked to comment, Leto is last seen spasming on the floor and speaking in tongues. Quote
Cult Icon Posted October 25, 2019 Author Posted October 25, 2019 I'm been procrastinating my watch of this movie. I keep on thinking that it'll be like watching Taxi Driver/ Requiem for a Dream and other great but also depressing/creepy/mood lowering films. Quote

My issue isn't with Phoenix as I'm certain he'll be great in the role, it's that the story and direction seem like a bit of a question mark. That being said, the worst case scenario is probably that we get a slightly pretentious knock-off of Taxi Driver or King of Comedy with comic book window dressing. Quote

Michael* Posted November 5, 2019 Posted November 5, 2019 Thought it was a gripping watch, good score, numerous meta comments on comedy and of course, an abundance of references to other films. I didn't find the 'message' immediately discernible, instead I thought it allowed for multiple readings which perhaps makes it more interesting in retrospect than it is in the moment. Two small things stood out as curious asides, the subversive take on Thomas Wayne who more often than not is depicted as something approaching a saint, as well as the shot of Arthur (in full Joker regalia) sitting in a police car with his head resting against the side window. That had to have been intentionally swiped from The Dark Knight, possibly as a tribute to Heath Ledger. Quote
