April 13, 20223 yr Russian sources (including the Russian MOD) put out footage and announced today that yesterday over 1,000 Ukrainian troops of the 36th Marine brigade surrendered, including the brigade commander (Lt. Colonel). They were defending the northern Mariupol pocket, in the vicinity of the Illyich plant. There was an attempted breakout attempt with 100 troops in vehicles, which was halted. Then the Russians counterattacked and the Ukr defense zone fell apart. The Azov Stal remains the final fortress, defended by the remnants of Regiment Azov plus others. After many days of heavy bombing it seems the Russians intend on clearing the area with infantry. Besides flooding the defenders, the Russians also added a special assault troop equipped with thermobarbaric RPGs and flamethrowers to attack them.

Basically they say that there are only "2,500" left and they are holding out in the final fortress, the Azov Stal. The Russians killed 4,000 Ukrainian troops and took 1,464 POW. The Russian MOD claims (4/16) that they have inflicted 23,367 KIA/MIA on Ukrianian forces in the war so far. April 18, 20223 yr Day 51 of the war: There hasn't been any dramatic movement in the Ukraine since the creation of the Izyum bridgehead. Since then the bridgehead has steadily expanded into a major staging area, and the 106th Russian airborne division has been deployed. This unit was originally operating west of Kyiv. Interestingly the Ukr claim that there are a lot of Russian proxy troops appearing in the salient along with army forces. Mariupol is nearly taken with one pocket left at the Azov Stal. Further, the majority of Russian formations (perhaps less than 40% of total Russian units in the theater, holding the Kyvi-Cherniv-Sumy area) that withdrew have not re-emerged save a few, plus some new entrants. Presumably rest, refitting/rebuilding, preparing for the next operation. In the Donbass salient, there has been some contested cities which the Russians slowly reduce and the salient is gradually getting more and more narrow. This can be seen if one compares maps 10 days ago with today. No tank-led Soviet blitzkrieg but rather a creeping positional warfare. Also interesting that the Ukrainians have been focused on routine counterattacks against the Southern front, particuarly at Kherson but with little results. So it seems like firepower has choked off maneuver for the time being. And the Donbass salient is getting more and more built up by the Ukr forces, it is questionable whether or not there will be any "pincer movement" by massed armored forces with encirclements. The Izyum salient is getting larger and larger but there is no similar mass of Russian forces in the south to make a Kursk-like encirclement. It looks like the Russians are currently focusing on firepower led-rolling offensives (with reinforcements deployed in whenever available), with many cities and large towns already turned into rubble heaps.
