A lot of it has to do with how good the actors from the UK are (in english-speaking roles) and how willing they are to work for US productions. The film "Conspiracy" is great even though it is about German Nazis and mostly acted by good quality British actors.  

 

Whenever there are films about ancient romans- they use British/anglo actors instead of Italian looking actors.

I'm halfway through book 6 now and down to the last 14 hours of the audiobook.

 

What struck me as quite appropriate for modern-day trends is how the story of the Witcher has a strong theme of feminism and race throughout the books.  There are alot of strong female characters,  they are toe to toe with the male ones in this story. The  Elves and their guerilla war against the humans are an obvious parelllel to the blacks and other races in other countries.

 

The feminism of the Witcher however comes across as not the modern far left type but the older, more moderate sort of feminism of the 1980s-1990s, which was when these books were written.

 

So the world of the Witcher is quite readily exploitable in today's entertainment environment.  The franchise seems to be doing decently well- with Season 2 coming, and the new Witcher Season 1 Blood Origins finishing filming, plus an anime movie etc.

Do you mean like the Uyghurs in China, or the Armenians in Turkey in 1915, or the Tutsis with the Hutus, or the Christians in Iraq, or the Indians in Qatar/UAE/Saudi Arabia, or the Jews in Eastern Europe in the 19th century & Germany in the 20th, or blacks sold as slaves by Arabs (for many centuries and still today), or the (too many) examples like that?

 

Yep, these horrible events happen when people are obsessed with race. Which is easily avoidable in real life, if we consider that there's just one human race.

 

As for the black segregation in the USA, it's specific to the USA. Poland never had that. Most European countries didn't have segregation either.

Today's environment has nothing to do with the 90s. The 90s were about equality of opportunity and color blindness. The 2020s are about equality of outcome (which is pure madness) and race obsession.

Didn't the Witcher 2 have a lot about the elf rebellen (Ioveth etc.)? The elf storyline moved away from them and to the Wild Hunt in the Witcher 3.

 

The 1980s-1990s feminism was more about "Strong, independent but also feminine".    That's how a lot of Witcher characters are written. Now it's about being less feminine and more masculine, and strong too...and blue hair, short hair/wearing men's clothing, lesbian/butch, anti- chldren,  etc..

The way they changed the Queen Calanthe character is like that.  They turned a matriach character into a man in a woman's body:

Yeah, totally horrible.  The good news is that the old MCU lineup is now finished, I doubt that they will see such success again.  I am waiting for the downfall of the superhero genre, but there is no end in sight..  and it might be replaced with a genre as bad or worse!

There is an equivalent for this moment, in the 1950s cinemas were filled with westerns and there were dozens of western TV shows on the air on top of that. Mirrored now by the MCU as well as the Marvel TV shows on Disney+.

Now the western is still around as a genre but it's very much a niche and no one expect a broad audience to go to the theater to see a western.

I suspect superhero media will face a similar downfall at some point but it will probably take at least another decade, maybe more.

I shouldn't have used blacks, I should have said Native Americans as the Elves in the Witcher.  In the world of the Witcher the humans are actually living on "their" land and the Elves are fighting back.

have you seen "Unforgiven"?  Great movie, and I think it was something of a catharsis for Clint Eastwood.  The film is in a way a subversive criticism of the Western genre as a whole.

Fishburne was iconic and awesome, however he got old and fat.  I don't know why he was replaced as he was really an essential character.

 

So far the Woke part is the obligatory blue hair girl .  The plot of the new film has been kept mysterious but there have been leaks going around that might make sense.  The "sisters" must be unhappy that the concepts from their film franchise has been aggressively used by the right wing.

 

This film was big when I was in high school, I saw the second and third ones in theaters.  I thought both of them were creative but didn't work as movies- basically kind of sucked.  The third movie however really ended things, but afterwards left a small cliffhanger for a 4th film.  

 

Whenever they make a sequel that's so late that all the actors look different, got old & fat it doesn't bode well since the film requires the chemistry they had when they were at the right age.
