#7 Paulina Porizkova and #26 Bar Refaeli will face each other in Round 3 of the Main Draw.

My spin: Both seeds had no trouble advancing to their clash in Round 3, which should be very interesting.  The 80's-era supermodel versus the 00's-era supermodel.  I like them both, but I like Paulina more.

#10 Heidi Klum and Stephanie Seymour will face each other in Round 3 of the Main Draw.

My spin: Well, another surprise, as far as I'm concerned.  I knew Stephanie had a good chance to win against Judit, but I would have never expected the margin of victory to be so huge.  In the other match, Shakara's run was predictably ended by Heidi.  The Round 3 match of Heidi vs. Stephanie should be a thrilling one, as two supermodels battle it out.

#3 Elle Macpherson and #30 Kelly Emberg will face each other in Round 3 of the Main Draw.

My spin: Both favorites cruised to easy victories.  It would have been interesting to see how far Melissa could go if she didn't draw an impossible match like Elle in Round 2, because she is pretty damn gorgeous, I think.  Renee's rather surprising run in the tournament came to a resounding stop, as Kelly thumped her.

My spin: Kim becomes the 4th qualifier to advance to the final 32 models in the tournament with another impressive win.  Yamila's win was equally impressive, as she convincingly beat a supermodel in Eva.  Can Kim's run continue in Round 3?

Lucia Dvorska and #22 Kim Alexis will face each other in Round 3 of the Main Draw.

My spin: Lucia becomes the 5th and final qualifier to advance to the final 32 models in the tournament, as she easily defeats Melissa.  Meanwhile, Bridget put up a good fight, but Kim outlasted her to round out the final 32 models in the tournament.

The first Round 3 match will be released today, beginning shortly.  Feel free to read a little recap of where we are, below.

---------

Well, there are only 32 models left in the 2013 SI Swimsuit Model Tournament!  Let's take a snapshot of where we are by comparing the list of 32 seeded models versus how the final 32 actually ended up.  If a model's name appears on the same line as the seeded model, it's because they're the ones in the final 32, not the seeded model.  Let's see how it looks:

#1 Kathy Ireland

#2 Cheryl Tiegs --> Genevieve Morton

#3 Elle Macpherson

#4 Christie Brinkley --> Josie Maran

#5 Daniela Pestova --> Nina Agdal

#6 Yamila Diaz-Rahi

#7 Paulina Porizkova

#8 Veronica Varekova

#9 Irina Shayk

#10 Heidi Klum

#11 Carol Alt --> Lucia Dvorska

#12 Rebecca Romijn

#13 Ashley Richardson

#14 Anne Vyalitsyna

#15 Rachel Hunter

#16 Marisa Miller

#17 Petra Nemcova

#18 Brooklyn Decker

#19 Stacey Williams --> Cintia Dicker

#20 Jessica White --> Kristy Hinze

#21 Kate Upton

#22 Kim Alexis

#23 Judit Masco --> Stephanie Seymour

#24 Tyra Banks --> Chandra North

#25 Vendela Kirsebom

#26 Bar Refaeli

#27 Julie Henderson --> Kim Cloutier

#28 Ana Beatriz Barros --> Hannah Davis

#29 Elsa Benitez

#30 Kelly Emberg

#31 Jessica Gomes --> Shannan Click

#32 Angie Everhart --> Laetitia Casta

In total, 20 of the 32 seeded models advanced to Round 3.  Six lost in Round 1, and six more lost in Round 2.  Interestingly, in all cases except for Cindy Crawford, who defeated #32 Angie Everhart, the model who actually defeated the seeded model advanced on to Round 3.

We have 5 models who have come all the way from the Qualifying Draw to make the final 32.  When I started this tournament, I wondered how important it was to really include everyone.  Couldn't I just narrow it down to start?  After all, who is actually going to win a couple of qualifying matches and emerge as a contender to knock off any of the "real models"?  Well, the answer is clear: the Qualifying Draw matters, after all.  I think it's cool that anyone starts off with their fair chance.

#1 Kathy Ireland - 74%

Laetitia Casta - 26%

#1 Kathy Ireland will face the winner of #16 Marisa Miller and #17 Petra Nemcova, to be revealed tomorrow, in Round 4 of the Main Draw.

My spin: This was a surprising large margin of victory for Kathy, as she had no problems holding serve and advancing to the "Sexy Sixteen".  I expected a closer match and thought Laetitia could actually pull off the upset, but not even close.  Laetitia had a good run in the 2013 tournament, though, and she'll go home and exercise for her 2014 tournament run.   :)

i think it's interesting how, when SI put out their rankings, people here complained that they seemed skewed towards more recent models.  and yet when you give them the opportunity to rank, they skew even further towards...more recent models!   i mean, i like genevieve, josie, and nina, but their contributions to SI really pale in comparison to any one of the three girls they defeated (cheryl, christie, or daniela).

i'll go ahead and bet now that even #1 seed kathy ireland will be beat by either marisa miller or petra nemcova.  elle will be the only high-seeded girl to make it to the final four.

I think it's because there's a lot more models in the recent SI years than in the past SI years, so statistically more recent models are more likely to get selected. Also a lot will depend on the selected picture and how they look in it compared to the picture of the other model. But the current "top 15" looks statistically more representative of all the SI models than the previous one.

I think you both make great points.  The interesting thing about the tournament is that it's a tournament format, not just a straight rank of models.  So, it has led to some interesting results.  For example, Daniela Pestova got knocked out by Nina Agdal in the second round, but I think (personal opinion) that both would make the top 15-20 models list.  Nina needs more years and a cover, but has the look.  But, Daniela got bounced from the tourney and would not be in the "top 32" if you chose to look at it that way.  But, she clearly is.  Similarly, some have had an easier draw and have ended up in the final 32 when I would not have expected them to.  (Think Shannan Click, Kristy Hinze, or Hannah Davis.)

UK is correct about the photo being judged relative to the other model's photo.  More, though, it's each model being judged on the other model.  That is what it is, really... a bunch of head-to-head matchups.  When selecting a photo, I've been basically using the model's last remaining best (my opinion) unused photo.  I've also tended to use similar poses for each model, when available, as to not have the photo itself be too much of an influence.

I'm glad it's generating some debate.  It's been an interesting competition so far!

#16 Marisa Miller will face #1 Kathy Ireland in Round 4 of the Main Draw.

My spin: Both of these women are clearly smoking hot, so there's really no loser.  But, Marisa got about two-thirds of the vote, so she'll advance to the Sexy Sixteen, while Petra gets knocked out, and her supporters will probably lament the fact that she ran into Marisa in Round 3, instead of getting an easier draw.
