Translation of the interview in Flair Austria September 2008 issue ...

A crooked front tooth flashs behind voluptous lips, the face is too round, the bust is too big - strictly speaking Laetitia Casta - manageable 1,69 metres in height - does not comply the established requirements of a supermodel. However, the 30 year old French has already graced hundreth of magazine covers ( Elle, Vogue, Sports Illustrated). Chanel, Victoria's Secret, Loreal and other big brands have chosen the muse of the recently died Yves Saint Laurent as their advertising "vehicle", currently she's the face to the brandnew perfume by Ralph Lauren, "Notorious". And in Chris Isaac's video to "Baby did a bad thing" she was writhing lasciviously on the sofa, so the music television channel VH-1 chose to air the censored version at day-time, "too steamy"! But away from the high-gloss-face there's another Laetitia Casta. In 2002 the mother of two kids publicly demonstrated against the politician Le Pen. And the Wahllondonerin (meaning she chooses to live in London) was godmother to the "parachutehunterregiment" of the French Foreign Legion. This surely refers to the taurus-signed Normandy-born's sense of humour as did her appearance as the beautiful Falbala in "Astérix and Obélix" - one Claudia Schiffer never would have flirted with a fat Gerard Depardieu in front of the camera. Casta's ultimate accolate made by fashion revolutionary Vivien Westwood therefore fails to surprise: "I don't believe in god but when I see Laetitia, I'm tempted to change my mind".

Flair: When your name is mentioned not only men start to dream. How would you describe yourself with three words?

Lae: Strong, fragile, true.

F: If there would be a movie about your life, who would play your part?

Lae: That's a difficult question. I think a woman like Simone de Beauvoir would be intresting for this part. It has to be someone who's got literary skills and a philosophic mind.

F: Your the face to the new perfume by Ralph Lauren, "Notorious". What are you known as notorious for?

Lae: Freedom! (laughs) No, honestly: many people foremost say I'm sexy. But often I think it's interpreted wrong. For me "being sexy" hasn't much to do with "Sex". You're sexy the most when you don't think about it. When you're dreaming. Or when you have to be very strong.

F: Which male should play your counterpart to the "Notorious" compaign?

Lae: Cary Grant, he had the elegance. Or Marcello Mastroianni, a very calm guy, who knows how to enjoy life. Or Serge Gainsborough of course. He was a genius to me, very talented. Shy but extremely charming. I got a thing for those kind of men. Or even better: my own boyfriend! (laugh)

F: And how should he smell like?

Lae: Masculine at any rate. It must be some smell you can't forget. If you cross a street you have to smell it immediately, so strong you can't get it out of your head.

F: Did you smell something like that alredy?

Lae: Yes, once. When I took my daughter to school there was this guy. Actually he wasn't my type, but I loved his perfume. A very intense, musky smell. I had to think the whole day about it.

F: In you French home country you're like a national icon. In the US on the other hand you'r elike the "American Dream". Which compliment means more to you?

Lae: Actually I'm French, so the French compliment should mean more to me. But to be honest: It means the most to me, when I'm liked for myself. Not for my looks. And then: Actually I'm feeling like being Italian.

F: Why's that?

Lae: I'm a family girl. Nevertheless I love my freedom and never let anyone rule over me. I'm spirited and very open-minded.

F: What do you think are the differneces between French and American fashion?

Lae: In France fashion and elegance is a cultural thing. Women want to become a part of fashion and dress elegantly in every-day life. The Americans have a different mindset. It's not about being elegant on all accounts. Fashion is very casual and relaxed there.

F: Do you have a secret recipe for let let you look that good always?

Lae: It's the same with every other person: Everyone only look good if they're happy.

F: Is there some aspect on the ageing matter you're frightend of?

Lae: No, I'm not frightened. Actually I think it's interesting to get older. It's just that many people expect me to be 19 years old - or at least look like that. This expectation is beyond reality, forever young and healthy - that's not existing. I think the most important thing is to stay relaxed. And that's what I'm trying to do.

F: With doing Judo? You got the brown girdle. Do you still keep yourself fit with martial arts?

Lae: No, It was fun when I was younger, I even went to competitions, bt after a while I thought to unfeminine. That was my reason to give it up.

F: You said once your bust have been made by the Normandy: Out of butter and cream cheese.

Lae: Yes, that's true. I kept saying that in the past. Back then journalists always asked why am I so sexy. I came up with the cheese-story then. This was my way to say: Leave me alone!

You're so welcome everybody, although we should not forget to say "thanks" to achAT for scanning the whole thing in such a brilliant quality.

@Lisa

I love her new pics as well. She's so elegant in the last editorials. Matured, but still so unmistakably Laetitia.

Yaaaaaaaaaaay cheers Mel...great translation!!
