August 14, 20231 yr ^It's just something my mom said while we were watching "13 going 30" I will never ever forget. The movie is about to end and 30 years old Jen Garner is sitting on the stairs, crying her eyes out because she didn't get "the man" and then went back to 13 making everything different to make sure she's ending up with "the man". A so called HAPPY ENDING. My mom: So she can't be happy without him, she has to be with him to be happy. Why is this the message of every fuckin girls movie? Also my mom while watching Titanic: Oh so she can live without him! 12 years old sobbing me: But with him would be so much nicer. My mom: You will understand when you're older. Me today: My mom was right.

My mother's other's role model was Eleanor Roosevelt. I've studied and am reading a book now about her and learned she didn't need Franklin to achieve greatness but it helped a little to be married to a president.

He sounds like an open-minded kind of guy. 🙄 You didn't even watch the video He says that creating heroines that don't have to undergo hardship to fulfil their journey belittles them and make them unrelatable/unrealistic. The problem of the "Mary Sue" trope is that it tells its audience they don't have to do anything to become good (which is wrong - reality will always remind you that). I'm sure you can get past the title of a video, general Grievous, right?
August 15, 20231 yr ^Is he also complaining about the downfall of the modern male character or is this only a "female" issue in his cinematic world??? And yes I watched the vid. Spoiler

Modern Hollywood is too blinded by arrogance to do some self-critique (and it looks with condescendance a past that was not the caricature it claims it was).
August 15, 20231 yr BTW, a message for those who just read video titles: you can't understand this video, unless you watch it Spoiler

There is a whole movie world outside the broken big studio system of Hollywood and I claim if you're open minded and look in the right places you even find decent modern stuff there too.

I'd love to know what these alternatives are. I like Japanese entertainment, but it's not that prolific and most of the good stuff is anime (not many good movies). Also, sometimes, they're a bit twisted There are a couple of good European productions (sometimes, but not that many of them). In the US, I thought Netflix would be an alternative, but it turns out that now they're among the worst
August 15, 20231 yr Oppenheimer was a really good movie (that's an exception for Hollywood in 2023). And Dune was great too (I'm looking forward to watch the sequel)
August 15, 20231 yr Not sure if all of this is still Margot related so I put my answer into spoiler and leave this here: 20 hours ago, Enrico_sw said: I'd love to know what these alternatives are. Spoiler Literally every country has some kind of movie culture not just America/Hollywood. The UK is straight coming to my mind with a tremendous market of movies and shows. Scandinavian countries highly famous for their well written crime stories. Then France (yes we cannes) even though you have to like their way of telling a story. Germany, Spain (both not brilliant but decent). Even Turkey or Poland. Not forget India and Bollywood. The huge asia market you already mentioned (it's far more than just anime I would say they're also very famous in the fantasy, horror and erotic genre for example and of course their Material arts movies like the Bruce Lee ones or Samurai stuff etc). Then there is a whole existing indie section next to the giant mainstream landscape (even in Hollywood). Of course I could give you a list of movies and shows I like and watch but in the end of the day it's also a matter of personal taste I think. Also my understanding of a good written character (male or female) may look completely different than yours. Watching movies and shows is something I highly enjoy since my childhood and it's also highly personal wether I can connect with a topic and characters or not. Also I don't think just because big studios and their CEOs like netflix, amazon, disney, paramount etc making some very questionable decisions based on lots of money lately (or maybe even since the beginning of money) doesn't mean all of their movies and shows are bad in general. Some maybe but show me the decade which brought us only masterpieces and/or good changes. I mean the time of stereotypes of racism and minorities (like the whole lgbtq+ community or people with disabilities) wasn't great either no? The time of trivializing violence against women. The time of role models of hard working men and perfect dressed cooking women just waiting for her husbands coming home in -well- basically every century just to name a few past issues.
