Kate wasn't a bad rookie, I just thought she looks too much "all-American beauty" for my tastes.

Anyway, this isn't a stand-out issue. I would rank it slightly ahead of last year's though. I'll probably only remember it for Alyssa grabbing my attention, Irina getting the cover (and probably just about deserving it?) and Hilary blowing my mind with her bodacious bod...

Does anybody knows when is the Model Search thing closing? Because they have the results open for public (Jessica Perez is winning  ) I didn't read the rules or anything, i just went there to vote for her

Where can you see the current results?

If Catrinel doesn't win that it'll be the dumbest thing ever, her shots are better than most of the models who actually made the issue this year!

wwwwwwwooowwwwww!!!!!!!!!!!

i can't believe how bad this magazine has gotten.

seriously. SERIOUSLY!

I'm not saying this as a "hater". i went out and bought EVERY SI Swimsuit Issue from Tyra's solo cover in 1997 to Daniela's in 2003 ... and, IMO, it's all gone further downhill ever since.

it all just looks so CHEAP. and where is the interesting photography?? remember -- this magazine used to be as much about the gorgeous shots of the exotic locales as about the models. now it's just hte same poses. SAME girls. SAME expressions. SAME ugly swimsuits. there's no sense of ART whatsoever -- and so it is incredibly cheapened.

genuine SUPERMODELS used to consider doing SI a real achievement and would participate in it -- from Naomi Campbell to Stephanie Seymour to Laetitia Casta, Heidi Klum, Rebecca Romijn, Tyra Banks, Eva Herzigova, etc etc. Not to mention the other supermodels from the 80s and early 90s. and it used to actually MEAN something. but now. now, it's just so boring and unoriginal.

the SI Swimsuit Issue needs a MAJOR overhaul.

the very first thing i would do is IMMEDIATELY FIRE ALL CURRENT PHOTOGRAPHERS. get some genuine artists in there. some photographers that can capture EMOTION and ENERGY and LIFE and BEAUTY. Bruce Weber, for example. get some fashion photographers that can help these girls and save them from posing like your cheap chick on the cover of Hustler.

next - i would mercilessly remove about 98% of the girls that are now included. there's no denying that these models are beautiful, but they're just so boring in these shots. and who is this Jessica Gomes woman?! i can go to ANY beach anywhere in the world and find at least 5 women with better bodies. why on earth has she been cast in what used to be THE most prestigious swimsuit magazine ever?!?

no -- i'm not a fashion snob. and i wouldn't hire some bone-rack like Freja to do the SI shoot. but there are SO many absolutely stunning fashion models who would bring an air of sophistication and credibility back to the magazine .. and who have insane bodies. like Lara, Edita, Rosie, Eniko, Daria, etc etc. None of these models would ever consider doing the magazine as it is right now. but if it suddenly took a turn toward a more artistic vision, and there were respected photographers on board -- they'd all come. and then so would the fashion fans. and because these women are already well-known by a certain portion of the world ... having them then be recognized by another portion of the world could once again create the sort of high-fashion/commercial supermodels we used to have.

I'm not sure if bringing in high fashion models would solve the problem. I think the issue is more the death of the supermodel. The SISE is really a perfect example of a product that needed the symbiosis between mainstream celebrity and modeling. With the decline in cross-over fame with high fashion models, we are left with this, a publication that is a shadow of its former self. Only I'm not sure there is an easy solution, just due to the change in the modeling landscape.

I mean, where is this generation's Elle Macpherson?

ooooooooooooookkkk ---

let me make a tiny addendum.

i wrote that reply only after seeing the pics that were on the website. i didn't realize that the magazine scans would be slightly different.

there IS more hope in the magazine itself.

i still stand by everything in my previous post -- but my opinion of hte magazine contents itself isn't quite as negative now that i've actually seen the scans and seen that it's a bit different from the website pics. still negative, don't get me wrong. just not as dramatically.

my favourite is Anne V. i also think that Irina has the most insane body! she's great for hte magazine.

Izabel looked awesome during her run at VS and in all her men's magazine editorials since. not sure why they couldn't find her potential here. she's a great model with an awesome body.

the rest of them --- meh.

So focus on the quality of the issue itself and create your own stars...

I have to say, that's a rather absurd answer. I don't personally know anybody who works on the issues, but I can guess that each issue is SI's attempt to do exactly what you recommend. It's not like SI is deliberately creating sub-par issues with models they don't think will amount to anything. Compare SI to VS. VS has dozens of catalogs a year, numerous promotional events, and the VSFS to cram certain models down our throats, and it's still hit-or-miss on whether the general public becomes even mildly interested. SI has one issue a year and only a handful of promotional stuff to go with it. They even got ten models on Letterman this year, instead of the usual one. I don't see what else they could be doing. :idk:

That depends on how you look at it. I never said that those people involved with the SISE don't go out to make the best possible magazine. But many people have mentioned on here how the locations, concepts and poses for these shoots lack all creativity. How they prefer to get stuck in self-reference instead of trying something new. That's what I meant with focusing on the publication instead of the models. Ask yourself the question, was it Christie Brinkley and Elle Macpherson who made the SISE such a hit in the 80s or was it the other way around? Me personally I think it's a bit of both. It's the old Pavarotti/Nessum Dorma conundrum: did the tenor make the aria famous, or the aria the tenor?

Now, which of the two do they have most control over: the basic concepts of the issue or the models they are able to attract to feature in it? IMHO, the easiest way to get out of their creative rut is to move away from their comfort zone and try something new concept wise. Bikini + tropical beach + same old poses isn't going to wow people any longer, especially if your models lack the raw star power of their 1980s and 1990s counterparts.

I guess they need to decide if they are happy with perpetual mediocrity, or if they are willing to take some risks in the hope of creating an iconic issue that is worthy to be compared to their 1980s apex.

I don't disagree with much of what you're saying, SS. In fact, PinkCouture used to run a Marisa fan forum and when she set up a poll to see which issue was everyone's favorite, the overwhelming winner was her Iowa shoot - in other words, the one she did that had nothing to do with the beach. But I do see a tad bit of hypocrisy going on here. A lot of people are saying this issue was better than last year's (at least marginally), when this year's locations are all incredibly cliche while the choice of locations last year was far more creative. (I particularly remember Genevieve and some other models posing at an airport with WWII planes.) In other words, we demand more creativity as fans, and yet we dismiss that creativity when we see it and blast the issue anyway.

Not to mention, I think you have to factor in the business side of things. A huge part of the issue is advertising. Will advertisers be as interested if the issue is taken in a suddenly unexpected direction? Advertisers don't care about creativity. They're paying tons of money to get their ads in a known commodity: a magazine with hot women posing in bikinis on beaches.
