It's either agree with me or you are attacking me. Far right activists are crazy and I don't like them either, but they're usually more silent, because we all know they're crazy. On the other hand, far left activists have a lot of support in the media, social media, etc. that's why they feel more confident in attacking other people. They think they have legitmacy. Also, people forgot what happened in the USSR, China, Cambodia (the khmers rouges were one of the worst of the worst), that's why far left activists (who are usually younger) think that they are reasonable. On the other hand, we all remember WW2. 2 hours ago, jkjk said: Also, I always assume I'm wrong, so I probably am here as well. Well, you shouldn't depreciate yourself. You have a lot of things to bring to yourself and others. Spoiler Quote

One of the ways they work is to never admit you are wrong. Quote

It is a good thing, to be used with parsimony I think. I used to work with Chinese and my French-Chinese colleague explained me that in the Chinese culture people rarely admit that they're wrong in order to "keep face". It's probably a bit "too much" (and it can be annoying), but I understand (at least partly) the basis behind this logic. I like Far Eastern cultures (though some of them are really complicated). Japan is probably my favorite. 3 minutes ago, jkjk said: I would make a bad con-artist. One of the ways they work is to never admit you are wrong. Yep, that's how they work. I recently watched a Star Trek episode with a con artist and even in other species that's how they work Quote

So do I. That's also why I like astronomy, astrophysics and... space operas (like Star Trek, Star Wars, The Expanse or The Orville). Quote
Enrico_sw Posted May 30, 2020 Posted May 30, 2020 It's funny because Star Trek is usually considered as Sci-fi with some scientific basis, but... most of the stuff they say (in physics and also geology, biology, etc.) don't really make sense (given what we know). Of course, we don't care, because it's a fiction, so any new laws can be inventend and the suspension of disbelief works, but... sometimes the ST laws contradict themselves Star Wars doesn't rely much on our world's science (for example, lightsabers don't really make sense... they're not lasers and they could be some kind of plasma torches, but that wouldn't make sense, you could disable them with a magnet really easily). If Star Wars work it's because it's far far away and it's the right mix between fantasy, science-fiction. It's like old myths and tales, with both European and Far Eastern influences (the Jedi design was heavily influenced by the samurai) Anyway, I'm rambling on again. Quote

I am actually what the majority of left/liberals on this forum would hate, so I just shut up and stay in my lane. It also doesn't help that in this situation that I grew up in a extremely heavy law enforcement and military family, so I've heard about it from both sides of the coin. Back in 2006 when I showed any kind of support for President Trump or Right leaning issues I lost friends on BZ, and the relationships have never recovered as a result. Myself and a couple others were mocked, and basically told our opinions were wrong nearly daily. If we posted a video in support of what was going on it turned into a 2 page back and forth shit fest. We tried to show grace by allowing them to say whatever they wanted, while we said nothing, and in the end it left none of us thrilled with being silenced, picked on and belittle... So yeah, I don't talk about anything heavy, and if I make mention of it, I do not reply to people who want to talk about it. Many of my friends are lefties and I don't hold grudges towards them, nor do they me with me (middle of the road libertarian)............ we just have civil discussions about topics and subjects. A huge problem to the divide within the country is the media and big tech who stoke the division for click bait money. I'll talk with anyone to see where they're coming although I might disagree with them. 4 hours ago, Prettyphile said: I have both conservative and liberal opinions on many things, some moderate as well, but the end of the day that doesn't matter because all anyone does is focus on my love of MAGA and that my points of view are different therefore to many on the left I am shite. I grew up in San Francisco bay area and used to be very liberal, then I got married, hit a new tax bracket, bought a home and moved to suburbia (which I thought I would loath, but I love the quiet and stability it offers ) and i stopped focusing on just me and what I wanted and started focusing on WE and what we needed. I had a huge shift in my reality as a result and never looked back. As we get older the more conservative we get due not be able to keep up with the changes in lefty politics and we want the world how we grew up. We have a hierarchy of generations and each generation below their own thinks that they're soft. It's just the way it is. Quote

I ask because I find it easier for things to remain civil in those situations than online, especially with people you speak with regularly. Quote

jkjk Posted May 30, 2020 Posted May 30, 2020 ^ Thought so, it makes a big difference. Tone is so important, and that's nearly impossible to implement while reading. Quote
jkjk Posted May 30, 2020 Posted May 30, 2020 In disaster/alien movies there is almost always a moment when the characters realize something bad is about to happen and some version of these two lines follow: "Who do we call?" "Everyone." It's very predictable and sounds ridiculous, but if they don't have it the movie is missing something. Makes me smile every time. Quote
Cult Icon Posted May 31, 2020 Posted May 31, 2020 The Air & Space museum in DC has displayed two shuttles- it's a sublime experience to be there. I saw the Enterprise, apparently now it's replaced by the Discovery: I don't really like the styling of the astronaut gear I saw today. Too much like a Halloween costume I miss the old popular interest in space pre-9-11 - much more healthy than obsessing over terrorists and economic problems The old gear was more Sci-fi ish Quote
