Fashion didn't know what to do with me after puberty': Model Hailey Clauson on finding fame at 15 - and being banished from the runways just two years later

Top model Hailey Clauson, whose career working for Christian Dior and Calvin Klein began at the controversial age of 15, says that ‘no one [in the fashion industry] knew what to do with me’ after puberty changed her body.

In an interview with WWD, showcasing the now-19-year-old’s new work as an editorial and lingerie model – which includes a starring role in Agent Provacateur’s spring 2014 ad – Miss Clauson reflects on the changes she has undergone (both physically and mentally) since first becoming a model.

She explained: ‘For shows, you have to be tiny. That’s why I was 16 [when I was] doing them. It was hard because you’re young and you’re constantly trying to live up to what you’re expected to be, and you don’t want to show up to a shoot unconfident.’

As she approached her 17th birthday, rather than continue to work with a lessened sense of self-esteem, the Thousand Oaks, California-native, ‘took a little break and went home’ to figure out more who she was as a person.

‘I was like, “OK, this is how I look now — I can’t be 16-year-old Hailey anymore.” It made me understand that I can own myself — if you believe in yourself, then other people around you will believe in you, too.

‘A lot of girls are curvier and going for that sexy, curvy thing. I got some meat on my bones and that’s OK.’

Miss Clauson made her runway return this season at the Jeremy Scott show – her first catwalk booking in two years, which came courtesy of her repoire with Mr Scott’s stylist Carlyne Cerf De Dudzeele.

Her appearance in the Jeremy Scott show was far different from her 2011 showing for Diane von Furstenberg’s fall collection– which caused a storm of controversy because the then 15-year-old model did not meet the CFDA’s guidelines that require designers to book models aged 16 and up. The situation was especially tenuous as Ms von Furstenberg has served as the president of the CFDA since 2006.

Another uproar came in 2012 when Miss Clauson sued Urban Outfitters for selling a T-shirt that featured a racy picture of then 15-year-old model suggestively perched on a motorcycle – which she, along with her parents, alleged was used without their consent.

‘It was just funny, because I had so many controversies, but I was the most innocent and good 15- to 16-year-old in the world,’ Miss Clauson now says of the scandals.

Speaking of other controversies, Miss Clauson has also spoken about her experience working with photographer Terry Richardson at the age of 17.

She said: ‘I just shot with him again a few times. My experience personally with him is that he’s actually kind of shy.

‘I worked with him when I was 17, and he was very respectful of the fact that I was underage. He was making sure I was OK and comfortable.’

Wow! chicka seems to have a good head on her shoulders. btw, that runway pic is delightful. that color looks great on her.
