Marlon Teixeira tenía el pasaporte vacío hasta principios del año pasado. Era un adolescente corriente de un pueblo costeño en el sur de Brasil: iba a la escuela, surfeaba y soñaba con convertirse en arquitecto o cocinero profesional. Pero su vida tomó el rumbo opuesto. Hoy en día, 18 años recién cumplidos, Marlon es uno de los modelos más cotizados del mercado internacional. Y en su pasaporte ahora quedan tan sólo dos o tres páginas para sellar.

En poco más de un año este joven brasileño ha protagonizado campañas publicitarias para marcas como Armani Jeans, Dior, Diesel y Custo Barcelona. Ha desfilado en las pasarelas más importantes del mundo para Hermés, Armani, Roberto Cavalli, Frankie Morello, D Squared y Kris Van Asche. Su valor en el mercado se ha disparado y su casa ahora está en Nueva York.

"Nunca he esperado ni siquiera una tercera parte de lo que me está sucediendo. Cada día lo primero que hago cuando me despierto es darle gracias a Dios por todo ", dijo a elmundo.es/America, por teléfono, desde el pueblo brasileño de Balneário Camboriú.

Marlon se convirtió en modelo por casualidad, casi a disgusto. Quien se dio cuenta de que tenía una belleza perfecta para el mundo de la moda fue su abuela, que siempre insistía para que se hiciera un book fotográfico en São Paulo, la ciudad más grande de Brasil. "Era el sueño de mi abuela, pero no lo quería para nada", recuerda. "Le decía: 'No, abuela. La moda es cosa de gay’. Era mi excusa para no ir a São Paulo."

Un capricho del destino lo obligó a realizar el sueño de su abuela. Marlon sufrió una lesión en las rodillas y el médico le prohibió temporalmente el surf. Serían meses de fisioterapia y descanso. Aburrido, decidió buscar la agencia de modelos en São Paulo sugerida por la abuela. Bastaron un par de fotos para que él —que nunca había pisado una pasarela— recibiera invitaciones para trabajar en París y Milán.

En pocos meses Marlon Teixeira sería una celebridad internacional. Llegó a tener un contrato de exclusividad con Dior por dos temporadas y protagonizar editoriales de moda en las más influentes revistas de moda. El pasado septiembre apareció en un ensayo fotográfico al lado de Shakira en las páginas de “Vanity Fair”

"Hace poco vi en una revista fotos en las que aparezco en la playa. ¡He sido perseguido por paparazzi! Pensaba que ello no me pasaría nunca." La prensa a menudo lo compara a Jesus Luz, el modelo brasileño ascendido a la fama gracias a un romance con Madonna, y a Gisele Bündchen, la “top” más famosa de este país sudamericano.

Marlon ya conoce la mitad del mundo. "En España, he estado en Madrid, Barcelona e Ibiza. Siempre trabajando, por supuesto. Me he enamorado de España ", asevera. De a poco se adapta a la vida de celebridad. El inglés lo tuvo que aprender en sus viajes internacionales, pero todavía se comunica con cierta dificultad. Su español es algo mejor, puesto que en su Balneário Camboriú natal impartía clases de surf a los turistas argentinos que invaden el sur de Brasil cada verano.

Pese al poco tiempo en el mundo de la moda, Marlon ya es consciente de sus responsabilidades. En una sesión reciente de fotos, advirtió de que no podría posar con una lata de cerveza en la mano —avisó a los productores que en ese entonces todavía tenía 17 años—. Ha desfilado y se ha fotografiado en varias ciudades costeñas del planeta, pero nunca se ha aprovechado de estos viajes para surfear. "Trabajo es trabajo, vacaciones son vacaciones".

I've always had the impression that Marlon takes modeling work rather seriously. He's almost always brooding or scowling in every photo I see of him. Not that that's a bad thing. He looks absolutely sexy doing it. LOL. He should loosen up a bit.
