I just came back from the screening and Wow Leo was fantastic. One of his best performances. I'm not just saying this because he's my favorite actor but once he's introduced in the film, is his movie and he owns it. I loved the scene when Daisy and Jay meet up at Nick's house. Overall I think the film is good. I can't wait to see again.

LOVE hearing this :hehe: Curious, what do you think his chances for awards this year are after seeing the film? (I mean pretty much all his performances were oscar worthy, just curious where leo as Gatsby stands)

Baz Luhrmann: 'I want to make Hamlet with Leonardo DiCaprio'

Baz Luhrmann has revealed that he would like to make another Shakespeare adaptation.

The Great Gatsby director told The Hollywood Reporter that his dream next project would be a version of Hamlet starring Leonardo DiCaprio

Asked what his next collaboration with DiCaprio would be, Luhrmann replied: "Hamlet. To me, Gatsby is the American Hamlet. What else could we possibly do as a follow-up? It's just a dream at this point."

The first reviews of The Great Gatsby have been published in the US, prior to the film's European premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.

A new set of promotional images was released last week, showing DiCaprio as mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby, Carey Mulligan as his socialite former flame Daisy, and Tobey Maguire as war veteran Nick Carraway, who becomes entranced by Gatsby's decadent world.

DiCaprio’s Gatsby is mesmerizing. His studied use of “old sport,” awkward attempts at poses and occasional lapses — dropping the Jay Gatsby facade — are exactly right, even if they go beyond the novel’s dense texture of mystery.

“Highballs, Mr. Gatsby?”

“Highballs it is.”

The beating heart of the book, its aspirational “Great Expectations” ethos — coveting wealth to recreate an imagined past and idealized future — shines through in this performance. The emptiness of those pursuits — money, partying, marrying for status — seems more modern than ever.

But it is DiCaprio’s lovelorn, hopeful, grasping and nostalgic Gatsby that stands out, a man who earns Nick’s finest compliment, one of the greatest lines in all of literature.

“They’re a rotten crowd. You’re worth the whole damn bunch of them put together.

Some more excerpts about Leo's performance

DiCaprio is the best Jay Gatsby we've had on-screen, forever striving to be something he is not and acquire something he can never possess. He deftly downshifts from cool and confident to vein-throbbing desperation. I have never seen the silent 1926 version, but the 1949 film with Alan Ladd is one of the most atrocious movies ever made. Robert Redford's Gatsby in 1974 was flat, and so was the film

Thought the reviewer made a good point here

No film version will ever be as good as the book, but Luhrmann gives it a heck of a shot with his visual and melodic roller-coaster ride. He is trying to make it all matter to an audience in 2013, reaching for something beyond a multipart series on PBS.
