Shedding salaries of redundant players will be hard as will reshaping the D. It takes a lot of defensemen 2-3 years to be NHL ready, although there are exceptions to the rules. Demko is very good, he's just not ready to be a #1 yet. The G position takes the longest to develop and goalies can still be at the top of their game in their mid 30's.
