Last night 40 models took to the runway in New York City for that joyous bacchanalia of boobs, butts, and bling, the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. The show, now in its 18th year, has made household names of quite a few Angels over the years. We went backstage prior to the show and chatted with Alessandra Ambrosio, Lily Aldridge, and Doutzen Kroes, three Angel vets who know a thing or two about walking around in their undies. The ladies dished about how they prep for the show, which body parts they’re most comfortable revealing, and the food splurges they’re looking forward to after the show. What’s your pre-show ritual? Alessandra Ambrosio: The week before [the show] I like to be here in New York and work out everyday, sometimes twice a day. I have my Brazilian trainer here training me, and I do Pilates at this amazing place called PPW. They mix Pilates, TRX, and barre. The night before the show I like to do a spray tan so I feel a little more like I just came from a beautiful island. Lily Aldridge: I don’t really have a ritual. I try to just relax the morning of the show. I don’t work out. I was at a hotel this morning, so I ordered room service and I just try to have a little me time and listen to music before I get here. This morning I was listening to Beach House, which is kind of cool and mellow. As far as workouts, I’ve done Ballet Beautiful all week, I mean I do it all year round. But I think it was important to take this morning off because resting is super important for your body. You know, relaxing your muscles. Doutzen Kroes: [i don’t really have one] because we’re so busy before the show. Yesterday we did all the preparations, like our interviews and [learning how to] lip sync a Taylor Swift song, then we had rehearsals. I didn’t even have time for a workout yesterday. I came home and did a spray tan and I just went to bed early. What did you have for dinner last night? AA: I had Greek food—grilled fish, some langoustine, and a great salad. LA: Roast chicken and sweet potato. DK: Kale salad with quinoa and tomato. It was really good. What food are you looking to splurging on after the show’s over? AA: My friend had her birthday last week and I bought a bunch of cupcakes for her and I didn’t have any, so tomorrow or tonight I want to have cupcakes. LA: I can’t decide. I might go to Joe’s Pizza or I might get a Bareburger. I’m going to see how I feel at the end of the night and see where it takes me! DK: French fries! Which are you more comfortable showing, cleavage or butt? AA: Cleavage, for sure. To me it just feels way more comfortable. When I have my butt exposed...oh my gosh! LA: Cleavage. Butt shots are a little scarier. Cleavage is hot and we’re selling sexy bras. DK: Butt. I’m not sure why. [Ed. note: We are, have you seen that thing? It's a work of art.] What do you think about when you’re walking? Do you have a mantra or anything you repeat to yourself? AA: I’m just listening to the music. The adrenaline and the energy is so high. I don’t even remember what I think about! LA: I don’t think about anything. If my husband [Kings of Leon lead singer, Caleb Followill] is in the audience, I’m definitely more nervous and I’m thinking about where he is. But if he’s not here I’m not really thinking about anything. He’s not going to be here today—sad! DK: I get nervous and think about wardrobe malfunctions. I just tell myself to enjoy the moment, to just walk and enjoy, but it’s hard. You always think about what other people are thinking of you and it’s very nerve-wracking. Last year I was walking with Rihanna and she was holding my hand and I totally forgot to think and I was in the moment. I want that again!
