Premier League - Eduardo breaks leg in dramatic draw Eurosport - Sat, 23 Feb 15:05:00 2008 A horrific leg-break for Eduardo overshadowed a dramatic 2-2 draw between Birmingham and Arsenal at St. Andrews. A penalty from James McFadden in the fifth minute of stoppage time earned 10-man Birmingham a point in a contest that was full of twists and turns. The Gunners suffered a nightmare first-half as Eduardo was streached off after being caught by Martin Taylor in just the third minute. Taylor was immediately sent-off by referee Mike Dean, but despite playing with an extra man, Arsenal went in at the break 1-0 down after McFadden curled home a free-kick. However, two goals from Theo Walcott in a five minutes spell just after the break looked like it was going to be enough to put the Gunners eight points clear before Gael Clichy brought down Stuart Parnaby deep into stoppage time. It had looked as if it was going to be a great turnaround by Arsenal who clearly needed the half-time interval to recover from the Eduardo incident. The Croatian striker was clearly in agony after the tackle from Taylor and his team-mates looked physically ill after the incident which held the game up for eight minutes. Such was the horrific nature of the injury that Sky television refused to broadcast a replay of the incident until half-time, and even then, they only showed the tackle as it was originally broadcast without any close-ups or slow motion replays. After the incident an eerie atmosphere surrounding the ground as the Arsenal players struggled to get their heads back into the game. Playing against 10-men they struggled to create meaningful chances, and although Emmanuel Adebayor was winning plenty of headers in the box, Birmingham's make shift centre-back partnership of Liam Ridgewell and Stephen Kelly were defending superbly. At the other James McFadden was playing a lone role up front after Mikael Forssell was sacrificed after Taylor's dismissal, and when he was bundled down just inside the D by Mathieu Flamini, Birmingham knew they had what would be a rare chance. The Scottish international took full advantage too, as he dusted himself off and curled a superb free into the top right corner although Manuel Almunia could have done better. Arsenal were clearly rattled but it was not until after the break that they finally started penetrating the Birmingham defence with purpose. Maik Taylor had already made a couple of good early second-half saves before Walcott finally levelled matters up in the 50th minute. He was on hand to fire home his first Premier League goal from close range, after Adebayor out-jumped Taylor to get his head on a Cesc Fabregas corner. The Birmingham keeper pleaded for a free kick but it was fair leap. Walcott didn't take long to get his second Premier League goal, just five minutes in fact, as he bombed forward after Ridgewell gave the ball away cheaply. The diminutive winger then cut in from the right and fired home a lovely low drive to put the Gunners in front. After that, the complexion of the game completely changed; Arsenal were happy to play the ball around, while Birmingham had to try and become more adventurous. However, a saved free-kick Mauro Zarate was the best they could manage until the late moment when Clichy got some of the ball but more of the man in the challenge with Parnaby which led to the penalty. McFadden emphatically buried the spot-kick for his second of the afternoon and soon after the referee blew time on a match that Arsenal will find hard to forget even though they no doubt wish they could.
