My sense is, at least in terms of general popularity, relevance, and endurance in the news cycle: This was always going to happen, even if Bellazon had picked their dream model and photographer lineup. The most generous read on MJ as an editor is that she understood this, and "activism through swimsuit issue" has been her attempt to cling to relevance. It was never a great idea or likely to work in the long-term, though it was probably one of the few options on the table. Honestly, they'd probably move more copies and do better ratings if they changed it to the Cosplay Issue, lol.
