Febuary of 1944 he helped create the Motion Picture Alliance for the Preservation of American Ideals. In 1947 he testified before the House Un-American Activities Committee regarding fellow actors that he believed were communists. After this he was called The Conspirator and many refused to work him. He passed away of lung cancer on June 8, 1969 in Santa Monica, California.
