Guti: Barcelona Are Down, But Not Out

Real Madrid midfielder Guti told Marca that an eight-point gap ahead of Barcelona at the top of La Liga is far from definitive...

The playmaker reflected on Barcelona's two straight league defeats that have seen the blancos regain a commanding lead at the top of the Primera.

"We can't say it's over - Barc,a are not dead," he warned.

"There are eleven matchdays left to go and plenty of points at stake."

He added that the Bernabeu side have already seen their advantage cut once this season.

"We went through a bad experience," he admitted.

"We had a nine point advantage, and we saw how quickly it was cut to two.

"From the outset we've said that the Liga is won in the final game, and anything can happen between then and now."

Looking back at his side's ill-fated Champions League challenge, he concluded, "The truth is that this was awful as we wanted to go further.

"We had very high hopes of doing something big. But, what's done is done, and now we need to look at the Liga, which is also a major title."

Player Ratings: Deportivo 1-0 Real Madrid

Deportivo produced an impressive performance as they extended Real Madrid's run without a victory in Riazor to 18 years. The visitors forward line offered very little, while the resurgence in their hosts continued as they looked confident and decisive, even if they did need an own goal to win. Goal.com has judged every player and dished out marks out of ten.

Casillas 6 - Did not have a huge amount to do and was helpless for the goal that came out of nowhere to beat him,

Torres 5.5 - Madrid's defence were not there weak point and the right-back looked as ragged as anyone. Was repeatedly skinned by Lafita, and should have stopped Filipe before the goal.

Heinze - 5.5 - The same goes for the left-back as he even went forward in order to help, although made little impact at that end.

Pepe 6.5 - The own goal was a shame for the defender as he had not played badly, and even ventured forward.

Cannavaro 6.5 - Maintained his position and stood firm whenever the home team broke away and cannot be blamed for the defeat.

Diarra 6 - Was given the task of protecting the back four and, in the main, achieved that without much fuss. His passing, however, remains a huge problem.

Guti 4 - Was not on form and looked lethargic. Gave too many balls away, and never once bothered to do something about it. On nights when his passing deserts him, he looks a real liability.

Drenthe 6.5 - An industrious first half, but all theat hustle and bustle rarely made an impact on the Depor defence. But he was trying ever so hard, unlike some of his teammates.

Sneijder 5.5 - Also did very little impress and his long range shot that went well wide in the second half summed up his display. Absolutely no imagination.

Raul 4.5 - Virtually anonymous up front. Whether that was because of his own performance or because of a lack of service is open to debate.

Soldado 4.5 - At least looked to involve himself, but in all honesty neither forward created anything for themselves.

Subs

Robinho 5.5 - Has helped Madrid in sticky situations before, but did nothing to help here even though he looked lively.

Baptista 5.5 - Came on and appeared to quickly become frustrated with the lack of movement and space up front.

Higuain 5 - Came on did virtually nothing to help turn around Madrid's fortunes on a night when nobody really stood out.

Raúl And Guti Hold Depor Inquest

Raúl and Guti held lengthy talks on the trip home from A Coruña on Saturday evening as they tried to work out why Real Madrid produced one of their worst performances of the season.

In a game of few chances, Los Merengues would expect to come out on top but they were beaten by a determined Deportivo team and an inquest was held.

After Raúl had stated that it was a poor performance to the media, he talked with Guti about why there was no spark throughout the side, according to AS.

While their position in the league table was not greatly affected after Barcelona were held by Almería, Madrid's veterans were still concerned that performances have to improve.

Guti is reported to have been stunned that he was the only player even attempting to create something from midfield, while Raúl then spoke at length about his feelings on the game.

The pair were confused that Roberto Soldado was named in the starting line-up, but because of the importance of the game and not because of his performance.

A silver lining for Madrid is that six of their last ten games of the season are at home and Ruud van Nistelrooy and Sergio Ramos are both set to return to the team.

Madrid Suffer Guti Scare

Real Madrid suffered a scare in training on Thursday morning when Guti limped off and looked to be seriously injured before tests to reveal that he could yet play at the weekend.

After being told that Ruud van Nistelrooy is out for the season, any knock is bound to cause concern and there were some worries that the midfielder would be out for a while.

Guti collided with Fernando Gago and was forced to leave the session and be treated by the club's medical staff who were evidently worried about what damage had been done.

Fortunately, Bernd Schuster has since been told that it was only bruising and he should have the playmaker available for the game against Valencia on Sunday.

There was some other good news for the Madrid trainer as Raúl and Arjen Robben both took part in half of a practice match.

While Raúl trained alone on Wednesday after complaining of a problem to the physios, Robben is aiming to return from yet another setback that has seen him sidelined in recent weeks.
