"This is the reward for a year of hard work"

The captains speak

Real Madrid's four captains, Raúl, Guti, Casillas, and Míchel Salgado expressed their euphoria after clinching the club's 31st league title.

RAUL

“It was all so beautiful. We turned around a very complicated match. The team displayed its solidarity, humility, and sacrifice. This title is all about unity.”

“This is our second consecutive league title. We're excited to get to Cibeles and to share it with our fans. We wanted to win this title sooner rather than later.”

“Wednesday's match will be special. We hope to win it for our fans so that they can be a part of something as great as today.”

“The team never gave up. We kepy on fighting despite conceding the goal. Thanks to that faith we were able to turn it around and win the title.”

“The team has given it its all this season, but we have some room to grow and next season we will demand even more of ourselves.”

“We won in one of the most difficult stadiums to play in. We were the most consistent team all year, and that's why we deserve this league.”

GUTI

“It was a shame I couldn't participate. This is the reward for a year of hard work. The match against Osasuna was important because it was on such a difficult pitch to play on. We are thrilled.”

“The dressing room was going crazy. Some guys have never celebrated a title. I hope it's just the beginning of a glorious era for Real Madrid.”

“All titles are special. We've won leagues in the last match and they've also had their magic. We were anxious to win another league.”

“Now we only want to celebrate with our fans. We're eager to get to Madrid to celebrate with them.”

“Having Barcelona welcome us onto the pitch will be a nice touch, but all that matters is that we won the championship.”

CASILLAS

“We are extremely happy because we were level and then managed to win in the last minute thanks to Higuaín. All we want to do now is celebrate.”

“It was an uphill battle after Osasuna scored. A draw would have been a good result because we would have only needed one more point to be champions. Higuaín's goal was incredible. I still feel like I am dreaming.”

“It wasn't the warmest of celebrations being that we won the league away from home, but now we can go back to Madrid to celebrate with our fans.”

SALGADO

“This is my fourth league title, but it feels like the first. I am thrilled with the team's attitude and the way which we won our 31st league.”

Guti Holds Secret Title Desire

Guti has a secret desire that Real Madrid do not wrap up the league title on Sunday against Osasuna and leave it open to be clinched when Barcelona visit the Bernabéu in midweek.

Los Merengues' midfielder will not play in the Reyno de Navarra because of injury and does not want to miss out on the party that will ensue when Bernd Schuster's team do eventually become champions.

Having seen their celebrations put on hold seven days ago after Villarreal beat Real Betis, Madrid's desire to win the title at home and then go directly to La Cibeles could be spoilt.

That is unless results conspire to leave Madrid needing to secure something from el Clásico on Wednesday, which would make Guti happy.

"Although it depends upon ourselves, it is definite that I would prefer to win it in the Bernabéu. It would be tremendous to win it against Barça," he explained.

"If it is not to be in Pamplona, then we will have a great game and be able to put on a show to give the fans what they want."

Guti appeared to be looking for reasons why Madrid may not secure the win as he added: "They are always difficult games against a side that makes life very hard. It is a small stadium that restricts the play. Also, they are close to the drop zone."

Guti: We Don't Need Many Players

Real Madrid midfielder Guti believes that the Real Madrid project continues apace, and that it needs relatively few reinforcements in summer in order to attain further success...

The veteran feels that the current squad is working out just fine and needs little elaboration.

Speaking in the aftermath of his side's title win, he told Radio Marca, "It's a great satisfaction. We worked hard all year to get this reward.

"The whole squad is very much involved with the project. The cycle that we started with Schuster couldn't be going any better.

"New signings? We could move for two or three players, but the team's base is already complete. There won't be 'cracks' in the mould of Zidane, Ronaldo, Figo... but great players."

The interviewer suggested that at least one of David Villa, Daniel Güiza and Luis Fabiano were in line to arrive.

"None of the three players are in Real Madrid but we could well sign all three," he chirped.

"All three have their qualities. Güiza is a brilliant finisher and ever-ready in the area; Villa brings with him a lot of hard work as well; and Luis Fabiano brings a lot, as well as scoring power.

"The midfield? Well, with Granero and De La Red..."
