July 21, 201014 yr Russel James Facebook: Not just a cute picture of Candice with Makeup artist Anna Marie, the technical curiosity here is that even though this light looks very strong it is fact quiet soft. Notice that candice’s eyes are sharp because I am focussed on them. Anna maries eyes are already just a little off focus even though they are inly inches apart. And the wall behind is well off focus on the tufted points. So the light is actually quite low, about 1.8 f-stop/250 at 100 iso. The umbrella really spreads the light quickly and the lower f stop is favorable to skin When taking light meter readings in this type of close up work its important to be very precise. Tim (who looks very comfortable as the demonstration model for this technique) is keeping himself as far away from the area he is reading as possible. The meter is turned directly towards the camera position (not the light, direct to where I am with the lense. As you can see in this frame he is just a foot or so closer to the light source and his skin is over exposed while Candice is looking about right. You have some leeway to coorrect on the file but it is easy to lose pore structure if you over expose so best to naiul it from the beginning.
