February 6, 201015 yr Getting Virtual with Candice Swanepoel and Marc Bouwer Bright and early this morning, Modelinia trekked to the West side of Manhattan to hang out with Marc Bouwer on the set of his shoot for the Fall 2010 collection. Already known for his virtual presentations, the Internet-loving designer once again embraced the web for his designs. “We are the pioneers of the virtual shows in the United States,” he said. “Some people thought we were crazy and others thought we were genius. Nina Garcia told me it was a brilliant idea and that it was the way of the future.” With London Fashion Week and Marc Jacobs streaming shows online, it seems that Mr. Bouwer really was ahead of his time. For Spring 2010, Marc used Lydia Hearst as his model of choice, but this season, it’s all about Candice Swanepoel. “I went with a friend to her casting for Marc, since I had finished all of my castings,” Candice said as she recounted the first time she and Marc met. “I was sitting and waiting for her and I heard their accents. I turned and said, ‘Are you South African?’ And they were like, ‘Yeah! Are you?’ They saw me and were like, ‘We gotta get you in a dress.’ So I tried the dress on and I started doing the show for him.” For Marc it was model love at first sight. “I totally zeroed in on Candice and I asked her to try on things for me,” he said. “We’re pretty much from the same town. We totally connected on that level. The minute she put on the clothes and started walking I knew this girl was really special. I love the piercing blue eyes, the long blonde hair, the soft sexiness. To me there’s nothing more alluring. She has a kindness about her which is very present in everything that she does when she’s modeling.” On set, Marc gave Modelinia a sneak peek at the looks, while creating a delicious and mouthwatering way to describe his creations. “Imagine if you have a very special box of chocolates in this beautiful black box. It has a velvet ribbon tying it together, and all these chocolates are covered in these jewel-covered wrappers and you slowly open them, and see the gorgeous copper chocolate underneath. Copper for me is the new gold.” But copper’s not only the new thing around town for Marc. He’s branching out into jewelry and handbags, with his new line for QVC, and a few of those pieces made it into the video. Set against a green screen, Candice displayed pieces from his collection, which is darker and more somber than the last, posing this way and that, which will be cut and spliced into a two-to-three minute video. “She’s just continuously walking, and there are these flickers of memory projected. It’s all about Candice and her moving and her attitude and her posing,” explained Marc. His collection looks toward the futuristic feel as the film will be all CGI, but no, he hasn’t seen Avatar yet. Of his influences Marc lists Stanley Kubrick and the film Blade Runner. Candice, however, can name her favorite part immediately. “There’s lots of animal prints, which I love—the African part. It’s going to be beautiful. I’m super excited to see how this will turn out.” Oh, and don’t look for Candice during New York Fashion Week. She’ll be traveling to Miami and Europe for work.
