Unmade, Unfinished or Unreleased Movies

Earlier today I stumbled upon quite an interesting video detailing the development and eventual cancellation of George Miller's unmade Justice League project.

 

 

Given what Miller accomplished with the Mad Max series, his vision for Justice League was always one of my favorite "what ifs" in the world of film, but being reminded of that got me thinking about how many more "what ifs" were out there. Are there any others, regardless of genre, era or reason for cancellation, that stand out as good examples?

Director George Miller's unmade DC film would have featured a huge showdown between Superman and Wonder Woman, according to Jay Baruchel. In an interview with the MTV podcast Happy Sad Confused Baruchel, who was set to star as Maxwell Lord in the movie, shared a few new details about what would have taken place in the movie.

Baruchel said the movie, which would have vaguely followed the story of the DC Infinite Crisis event, had Maxwell Lord using his powers of mind control to take over Superman, using him as a weapon against the League. This would ultimately lead to an epic brawl between the Man of Steel and Wonder Woman, with him going so as far as to break the Themiscyran's wrists in the process.

 

Baruchel said the movie came very close to being produced, noting the cast held table reads of the script and met in Australia to look through the "command center." Additionally, most of the cast was already being fitted for costumes.

 

In addition to Baruchel, the film would have starred DJ Cotrona as Superman, Megan Gale as Wonder Woman, Armie Hammer as Batman and Adam Brody as The Flash. Thanks to a series of interconnected events, including the 2007-08 writers' strike and a change in tax legislation in Australia (where the movie was supposed to film), the project was shut down.

While Justice League: Mortal sadly seems destined to always be a nearly-was, DC has finally succeeded in bringing the League to the big screen. After undergoing a series of reshoots at the hands of Joss Whedon, Justice League will be released in theaters on November 17.

Sergio Leone was supposed to make a movie based on the book "The 900 Days: The Siege Of Leningrad" by Harrison Salisbury that tells the story of one of the worst encounters on the Eastern Front in WW2.

 

He was working a lot during the the last years of his life, and one that came closest to production. He got a passion for this book and he worked hard in order to make it happen. He intended to work with Robert De Niro, who would have played the American photographer who becomes trapped in Leningrad at the bombing start and falls in love with a Russian woman (and then he died on the day that the city was liberated.... )

 

A the end of the 1980s, Leone had raised a lot of money and he had his dream team on board, including Ennio Morricone and Tonino Delli Colli. Leone wanted to make the movie in St Petersburg in Russia. He didn't want to go anywhere else. He fought hard to get approval (from the communist regime, which was starting to fall apart). He got it in 1989! But then..... he had heart attack and died at the age of 60 (too young!)

Very interesting.  Leningrad and the war in the northern wing of the Eastern Front for Leningrad is incredibly rich in drama and millions of casualties.  The situation in the city itself is very dramatic, with gigantic (IIRC almost a one million) death toll.  Civilians dying of starvation in huge numbers and living on 500 calorie a day diets while huge battles to reach the city occurred in the northern wing..   Even today tanks, aircraft, vehicles, mines, skeletons, and other items are uncovered from the region.

 

The film "Pianist" captured the feeling of starvation very well (about Warsaw).
