Kicking It With Aussie Models Fernanda Ly & Jordan Barrett

If you've spent much quality time on our website, or the more fash corners of the interwebs, you'll probably be familiar with Fernanda Ly and Jordan Barrett. The two legends have been building major international modelling careers for themselves for a minute now, walking and starring in campaigns for the likes of Louis Vuitton, Balmain and Calvin Klein.

As well as being genetically #blessed, Fernanda and Jordan have mad personality (refer to their personal Instas for evidence). They also recently returned home to star in Marcs' cool/cozy AW16 campaign, so we took the opportunity to call them up and bro-down about 'Straya and life goals.

FERNANDA LY

Nadia Bailey: Where are you right now?
Fernanda Ly: At this moment, a cafe in St. Marks Place, New York! I'm being very rude and looking at my phone instead of socialising with my friends who are sitting here with me.

You were back in Australia to shoot the Marcs campaign. What are some things you look forward to about coming home?
My parents' home cooking and seeing my friends in person — not through a phone screen.

Having that Louis Vuitton exclusive was a huge deal. Was that your career highlight so far?
Definitely — everything else I have done has been amazing, but only happened as a result of the Vuitton exclusive putting me out there. I'm really thankful to Nicolas, Ashley and the Vuitton team for everything.

Is modelling your main focus at the moment?
Modelling is something I really enjoy, but I'm interested in everything! I want to learn about other cultures and languages which modelling enables me to do.

What are some other things that you're into?
Reading, (currently) tea set collecting as I have no tea-related stuff with me in New York, and cafe hunting as usual.

What do you do to kill time while you're waiting around on shoots or backstage?
I circulate between lots of reading and playing 'Love Live! School Idol Festival'. If I'm lucky and shooting with people I know, we catch up while waiting for our turns to shoot.

Do you chill on your phone a lot? What's your fave app?
Instagram is the only thing I use, so I suppose I can only choose that. However if Line (a messaging app) counts it would be that — I buy too many stickers!

What's the last book you read?
Oliver Sacks' Hallucinations — great book and great author.

What's the last song you listened to?
Some sort of Middle Eastern pop music that's currently playing in the background at the cafe I'm at.

What was the last thing you took a photo of?
My tea and water that I have finished drinking already. Someone asked me where I was so I sent them that.

What are you most excited about in life right now?
My Royal Albert tea pot that should be arriving tomorrow, and learning Mandarin! I'm really interested in languages and learning them so I'm taking classes now.

NOW CASTING: FERNANDA LY

"EVERYTHING IS HAPPENING!"

INTERVIEW BY RAY SIEGEL

“That pinked haired model” that everyone is talking about is Fernanda Ly from Sydney and she’s as sweet as can be. The whirlwind runway season ended with Ly walking exclusively for Louis Vuitton, trunk in hand. Now signed with DNA Models in New York, the architecture student has recently relocated from Australia and knows that the road ahead will be a wild one. We gossiped with Fernanda for a bit about New York, street style, and her talked-about hair color—which, by the way, was left completely untouched for her runway debut.

Since your Vuitton debut, things must be exciting for you right now?
“Definitely. Everything is happening!”

Do you know what’s next?
“I’m in New York now, which is really cool. Sydney is a bit empty compared to here. I haven’t heard any details yet, but I’m on hold for a few things. I’ll be surprised. Now I’m just meeting everyone here.”

Everyone is really into your personal style also. Didn’t you win The Cut’s Street Style award?
“I did yeah! Someone sent a link to me in the morning. I was like “That’s me! I’m number one!” I didn’t even know that the contest existed until I saw the award.”

What are you wearing today?
“It’s a two-piece thing from an online shop in Korea. It’s from a random shop I walked passed [Old Navy]. And I have an Adidas jacket underneath.”

Who does your hair?
“Back in Sydney there’s a salon called Headcase Hair. Since I’ve been here, I’ve been going to Sweet Caroline. They’re in Soho, I think.”

Are you keeping it this way?
“For now. My conditioner is pink—I use manic panic. I mix my dye into my conditioner, so every time I dye it, it refreshes the color. Mine is the lightest color, but I still have to dilute it lighter.”

Since you’ve started working in fashion, are there any new brands that you’re into?
“I didn’t really have money to buy stuff before. I was street, I guess. These are my favorite boots from Unif. They’re my snow boots! I have about that much clearance [makes a hand gesture for two inches] when I put step my foot into the snow.

Was this your first time seeing snow?
“It’s my first time seeing it pile up like mountains on the streets.”

Where are you staying while you’re here?
“I’m staying in a model apartment on 8th Avenue in midtown.”

What are you doing after this meeting?
“I’ve got three more go-sees after this.”

Do you have any spare time to explore the city?
“Yeah—I’m going to eat with my friend tonight. I love Asian food! I went to Korea Town with my friend. Everything is so good!”

Fernanda Ly (a.k.a. the model with pink hair at Louis Vuitton) on walking her first Paris show

And how she looks after her hair.

We first caught sight of Australian model Fernanda Ly last year at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia. Since then, she’s been an under-the-radar favourite - from being a special guest during Vogue Fashion’s Night Out to making cameos on our Instagram account.

So it was a form of validation to see Ly being featured as an exclusive model for Louis Vuitton’s latest autumn/winter ’15/’16 show in Paris. Here, she chats to Vogue about the experience. And yes, she gets asked about her hair. A lot.

When did you first hear that you were booked for the Louis Vuitton show?
“First thing in the morning when I checked my emails (still laying in bed, half asleep). I took a screen shot to prove it wasn’t a dream.”

What was it like working with Nicolas Ghesquière?
“It was definitely an experience to remember. He was always so enthusiastic and overall amazing to work with.”

What did you think of the look you wore in the show?
“Cosy! If only fur coats were suitable in Australian weather...The trunks are also calling my name...”

What would you have been if you weren't a model?
“Desperate to travel and lacking the opportunity.”

What did you do in Paris during your down time?
“I had a little time here and there. Hunting down shops that sold flower shaped gelato with Lara Carter was perhaps the most memorable! Seeing an unobscured Eiffel Tower glittering at night from the balcony of the Australian embassy comes as a close second.”

How do you maintain your hair?
“Patience and continuous upkeep! I would probably be bald if I didn't take care of my hair. In terms of colour however, I mix my hair dye into a bottle of conditioner to maintain it. I highly recommend anyone with unnatural colours do this!”

Do you ever get tired of being asked about your hair?
“I have developed an automatic reply to almost all hair-related questions.”

Were you interested in fashion before modelling?
“Yes, particularly street fashion. It’s something I have always held an interest in.”

What have you learnt from modelling so far?
“Three things: 1) Models work much harder than you realise and the work itself isn't as easy as it is made out to be.  2) Everyone is very serious about their work. It’s an art, so even the smallest details are fussed over. And 3) It isn't a good idea to interrupt a stylist with an iron too close to your scalp or eye lash curlers near your eyes.”

5 things to know about Fernanda Hin Lin Ly

You probably haven’t heard of her yet, but the girl with pink hair is the new fashion and street style sensation.

With her extra long, candy-coloured hair, Fernanda Hin Lin Ly made a splash last week at the Louis Vuitton show during Paris Fashion Week. The 18-year-old may just be a fledgling, starting out on her international modelling career, but we expect to see her pretty much everywhere soon. Plus, if you are anything like us (somewhat easily impressionable), this spunky fashion sensation will probably make you experience a sudden urge to dye your hair cotton candy pink.

SHE IS AUSTRALIAN

Don't trust her instagram desription "mahou shoujo" -meaning magical girl in Japanese- Fernanda Hin Lin Ly might look really kawaii, she is actually of Chinese origin, though born and raised in Sydney, Australia.

HER HAIR IS HER SIGNATURE

Despite her petite size for a model - she's 171cm - and thanks to her signature hair colour, Fernanda Ly was scouted and signed immediately by Australian modelling agency Priscillas last year. She has since started scoring jobs at Sydney Fashion Week and Australian Vogue Fashion Night Out.

SHE SCORED AN EXCLUSIVE CONTRACT WITH LOUIS VUITTON

The 18-year-old signed an exclusive contract for Louis Vuitton during the last Paris Fashion Week, meaning she couldn't work for any other brand during that period. This usually marks the start of an IT-model career, so let's see what's next.

SHE'S AN ICE CREAM ADDICT

Seems like models don't actually eat only quinoa and kale. Half of Fernanda's Instagram feed is filled with candy-colored ice cream and she even said that after her modelling career she might consider opening an ice cream shop!

SHE IS BECOMING A STREETSTYLE STAR

With her monochromatic outfits and pony-like hair, the pretty lady gets noticed by street style photographers. The Cut, the NY mag's online fashion magazine, named her best dressed at Paris Fashion Week, which you have to admit is a good start for the 18-year-old!
