HE Magazine - Spring/Summer 2006 Issue

Mathias Lauridsen was born Friday 13th of January 1984 in Copenhagen and started modeling in 2003. His second job ever was for Another Magazine hailing him to be the next big thing and his third a Jil Sander campaign. Here he shares with us what goes on in that pretty head of his.

First job?

Something called 'Shoe Magazine.' Don't ask!

What do you aspire to become?

Adult.

When do you feel like a model?

On my way home from a show.

Who's your favourite photographer?

David Sims and Tom Munro.

What's your money shot?

My left profile -- works every time.

Do you like to strike a pose?

Oh yes, but it takes me three hours to warm up.

When did you last say: Excuse me, but I'm like -- a model!

Hmmm, come to think of it, I never have.

What's the worst thing about modeling?

No food on monkey class.

What's the best thing about modeling?

So much free time.

What are you wearing right now?

JBS Tank top, t-shirt from American Apparel, Dior sweater, Acne Jeans and Kawasaki Shoes.

Who's your hero?

Damon Albarn

Who's your fashion icon?

A lot of the people I've met in fashion. People who don't necessarily wear something alike, but prove that there are other styles around.

What don't you ever travel without?

My iPod and my toothbrush.

Do you think 'clothes maketh the man?'

Yes, if you're dressed properly, and according to how you are. As opposed to those who try something which looks phony on them. I.E. I would never dress like a bling bling hip hopper -- you know.

What's your most cherished possession?

I would like to think that I could live without any of my material things without missing anything, so I deliberately don't have any.

Do you read fashion magazines?

Yes when they're around, but I never buy them. However, it's a good way to use excess time.

What's on your iPod?

Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins, Jenny Wilson, Kings of Leon.

What's the latest book read?

Whoahh! I don't remember, it's been so long - Perhaps it was Harry Potter 2 when the book came out and that's a long time ago.

Do you eat food?

Oh yes all the time.

What's your favourite food?

Mashed Potatoes.

What's your favorite scent?

Aqua di Gio.

How many shoes do you own?

10 Pairs, but only use three.

What's the first thing you bought with your model money?

A round of beer for my friends.

Where are you off to?

To a soccer match in my club called FC Sailor Boys. It's a private club with a bunch of friends.

mathias lauridsen, model

the hottest must-have in fashion right now is mathias lauridsen, the face behind an impressive list of giga brands growing as we speak. and yet he’s grounded in reality, with a quick wit, making him all the more appealing.

any online fan site will tell you that mathias doesn’t buy fashion magazines. he is known to have 10 pairs of shoes but only wears three. his favorite food is mashed potatoes. and he won’t travel without his ipod and toothbrush, and has quite a down-to-earth attitude in a world known for being the absolute opposite. in fact, the first thing mathias did with his modeling money was to buy a round of beer for his friends. aside from his hypnotic hazel eyes and bed head, brown hair, mathias has something else that adds to his appeal, a scar on the left side of his face. when asked, he reveals that it’s the result of a drunken argument when he was about 15 that got out of hand. it’s ironic that it would work to his advantage. at age 23, mathias has already worked with a slew of some of the most famous aspiring brands in the business including christian dior, hermes, calvin klein, marc jacobs, perry ellis, dkny, jil sander, lacoste, kenzo, tommy hilfiger and hugo boss. most recently, he has become known as the face for gucci pour homme ii. mathias shares his off-the-cuff insights from his perspective in front of the camera, from his home in copenhagen.

q. what is danish about your look / style / aesthetics / appeal?

a. i’m actually often asked if any asian blood runs in my family because of my eyes. so i’m not really sure how particularly danish i look.

q. what makes danish fashion danish - from your point of view wearing it?

a. i think what makes danish fashion danish is the distance it has to itself and the business. it seems danish fashion embraces the casualness that makes you feel in control. you are wearing the clothes and not the other way around.

q. as a model, what do you love about your work in fashion?

a. the cliché is traveling and meeting people. what is really positive about the business is that you can just remember who you like and forget about the rest. i’ve never been much of a traveling person, actually. i’m glad to have a job that is forcing me away from copenhagen. it feels good to know that when i get older, i probably won’t have the feeling of “missing out” on seeing places. and as a bonus, i like the fact that i haven’t had to pay for a haircut in four years.

q. what are some of the challenges from your perspective?

a. the biggest challenge would definitely have to be all the time you spend alone and all the “family, friends and so on” stuff you miss out. another challenge is having to connect with people you meet for the first time. the business has so many players and new ones coming and going constantly, you have to present an open mind and be good at small talk. that’s probably why outsiders find it so superficial.

q. what could the global fashion world learn from the danes?

a. what the danes could give is a more laid back approach to the business. it seems they always keep in mind that fashion is only fashion. and it’s not about creating your identity through fashion, but supporting you identity with fashion.

q. what could the danes learn from them?

a. just to contradict myself completely, i think the danes could also learn to be a bit more passionate about their work in fashion. the mentality here is you should be the best you can, but you can’t allow yourself to care too much, either.

q. what’s one amusing experience regarding cultural differences?

a. i found it amusing going to tokyo with [the film] “lost in translation” running in the back of my mind. going there i found it, at least from a western point of view, to be exactly like that. i like to be able to read a situation and figure out the proper thing to do. there i loose that ability.

q. when you’re away from denmark, what are three things you miss most?

a. being able to have fun with my friends and family. riding by bike in the streets of copenhagen, especially in the summer time. staying up painting while everybody else is sleeping.

q. off camera, how do you keep yourself amused?

a. my ipod is a very dear companion. while i listen to it i can just think of everything and nothing.

q. would you consider trading places, for example, to be a photographer or a stylist?

a. probably more with the photographer than the stylist. i don’t really see myself doing either. even though shooting summer clothes during winter i would very much love to trade places.

"Shoes with paint spots are too stupid"

Danish Mathias Lauridsens there is the world's most successful man model right now

Who is your favourite designer just now?

"Bjørn Bruun.

He is so nice.

Hey, I like not to have too much of the same brand and think, it's too much, if everything what one owns, is designed.

That is to be diluted with cheap cases and recycling."

What do you look forward to go in/along next the spring?

"Less clothes first of all and a large, light scarf, I just have got from the Dries van-note (Dutchly desig nerly, ed.)."

What was the largest fashion- failure in 2007?

"Yves Saint Laurent's shoe with painter spots on.

It was too stupid."

What is the greatest fashion hit in 2008 to stay?

"That is what I do not know.

For my own part most will from 2007 enough still hold - tight jeans and a chromatic spectrum from penny to kind."

Which fashion show do you look forward mostly to during the fashion week?

"Bruuns Bazar.

There most of the boys take care of, I know from shows in Europe, also to be, thus it's cosy and funny."

Where is the most important after- party?

"I have never believed that the parties were an important part of this trade.

I have by and large never left to any of the fashion parties at home or abroad, and that has gone very well anyhow."

Who is Denmark's best clad man?

"Frank Hvam.

It's impressive to have an Adidas-peaked cap as the pillar at the wardrobe."

What do you hear at the moment?

"I have just bought The Hives' "The Black and White Album", but also hear

The Kooks and always King's of Leon. "

Which town do you stop mostly of?

"Copenhagen - clear!

Here are cosy and coolly, and it's here, where I have Family and friends.

There’s no other town in the world that is able to cope with."

What does Copenhagen lack?

"A Christiania, who gets permission to be in peace, and a youth center, clearly.

Payment for driving in inner town, and that the trucks put all the way out."

Tomorrow Mathias Lauridsen will go down the platform completely exclusively, when Bruuns Bazaar and Noir show forward autumns- and the winter fashion 08

Gender: Femme

Fav Model: Mathias Lauridsen

Mood: Spiffy My cousin is out right now and her younger brother doesn't trust himself to translate, but I will say this: I love Mathias so much more when he's speaking Danish. I love the language. It's really a language that makes you sound relaxed, but it's hard to speak.

And hey, he's Danish! They live in the happiest place in the world and seriously, they are all really, really nice. It's almost unnatural o-o

One thing that bothers me is that... why does the Danish English accent sound... really, really... odd on him o-o xD It's sad, but true.

I'll be stalking the news here because they made this HUGE thing when Paris came and they're covering almost every inch of Copenhagen fashion week!

Oh, cousin's back! Here it is!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3za9U-w3S3k

Announcer Lady; " ...now it's about fashion again. We

have many beautiful women, but at the moment we also

have a very beautiful, hot man. He is not only

beautiful, hot and young, he is also one of the world's

hottest and best top models. We have followed him the

last couple of days as well as yesterday to a fashion

show at the government's state museum for art. His name

is Mathias Lauridsen. "

- thing in english -

Mathias; " I've just arrived here to Bruuns Bazaar Show

at the Govenment State museum for art and I'm just

getting make-up done and I assume I'm going to have to

get my hair done and then I, hopefully, go up and try

the clothes and see the things. "

Mathias (who is now dressed and ready to go); " They too

are having a hall test. We should probbly listen. "

Bjørn ; " Now, we'll just try it once."

Bjørn ; " Mathias looks good, but it's not all about

looks. The biggest guy on the market isn't always the

guy who looks good. It's about doing good in front of

the camera and we know that we can say that Mathias

looks very good and he can do what's needed. So, he is

very special, I would say. I have worked with many and

Mathias is very extreme (in a good way). so, I don't

really know who's better than Mathias, I would say he's

number one in the world. He is clearly in a class for

himself. "

Mathias; " Now we're standing here just before the show

starts, I had my wardrobe presented. I have three

outfits; the first one is calm and quiet, that's what

you jump in while you're waiting, the next few pieces

should go a bit quickly. So, there's traffic back and

forth here. In shows it's necessary to have a dresser,

but in daily life it would be completly horrible to have

another ready when you took your shirt off."

Mathias; " We're rolling! "

Jesper; " He's incredibly photogenic and he looks

diffrent on every photo. If you look at his campaign for

Gucci, Lacoste and Hugo Boss in his porfolio, you would

think he was ten diffrent people. He has something

incredibly photogenic which is incredibly rare and he

has been number one on Models.com for two years now

which is very unbelievable that a Danish model has been

the greatest for so long. We have never had something

that reminds me of this and we have never had a woman

for that long either. "

Mathias; " Oh, those girls, they are walking so slowly.

"

Mathias; " There was a lot of time. "

Jesper; " He's very calm, he's very down-to-earth, he's

not a party guy, he's not even one of those people who

have their nose in the sky (arrogant). He's a very good

boy. I would say that it has been a very important thing

for his career that he's very sympathetic and sweet. In

every-- there's models that can be in his position and

they're like 'and here I come', but he's not like that.

he's a very nice boy. "

Mathias; " The show is running a bit late, but all

together I think i've been here for two and a half

hours; effective working hours. It has been with clothes

changing for fifteen minutes. So, that's the way it is. "

(The clips is starting a bit weird, but I think the first line goes like this)

Interviewer: Mathias Lauridsen & Freja Beha Erichsen have made a fast career in the international fashion world, and are now in the absolute top.

Last night the Danish fashion world celebrated the two supermodels.

Voiceover: Musicians, TV-celebrities, and the top of politicians arrived last night to celebrate the Danish fashion world. And of course models and designers were also there to Denmark’s first fashion awardshow implemented by the fashion kings, Kim Grenaa and Uffe Buchard.

Suzanne Bjerrehus: We are on the world map, and that’s something to celebrate.

Voiceover: And it did get celebrated, a bit late for Suzanne Bjerrehus’ own model son, but she, she were allowed to present the ward for best male model.

Suzanne Bjerrehus: Mathias Lauridsen.

Voiceover: And in the company of Erik Brandt and Jokeren (in English: the Joker, Danish rapper) Freja Beha Erichsen got her award for best female model.

Eric Brandt: (I can’t exactly hear what he’s saying, but something about she always got attitude in her work).

Interviewer: That is how it looks when awards get presented in the Copenhagen night-life.

Welcome to you Uffe Buchard, and Mathias Lauridsen, and Freja Beha Erichsen.

And it’s very rare I welcome someone in this studio whose name is Beha Erichsen, like mine.

Freja: Yeah, it probably is.

Interviewer: It’s so cozy, cause we’re actually cousins, but we’ve never met until now.

Freja: Never, no, that’s weird.

Interviewer: Hello Freja.

Freja: Hello.

Interviewer: Do you think we look alike, Uffe?

Freja: A little bit?

Uffe: Yeah, a little bit.

Interviewer: How is it to be a model star, and travel in the big world and then come home and get a big award like this? Is it good?

Freja: Yes, I guess it is.

Mathias: Yes, I think so. It’s .. all shoulder claps (Danish word for when people knowledge what you’ve accomplished) are welcome, and of course it’s .. you take it as a clap on the shoulders and a recognition that you’re doing a great job.

Freja: Exaclty.

Mathias: Of course that’s always nice.

Interviewer: Uffe, you’ve been part of the arrangement of this, fashion award, and you were part of the judge committee. Why is it Mathias and Freja who should have these awards?

Uffe: Well, I’ve only given my one vote. There are 250 people who’ve been involved from the Danish fashion world and the international. And then there has been a judge panel, a hardcore inner circle, of 20 people, who’ve made the final decision. And I want to say that I don’t think the selection was hard, because we’ve here two superstars.

Interviewer: Yes, what is it that they can, in relation to other moels?

Uffe: Well, what I think a good model should be able to today is not only being pretty, cause that’s just not enough. A good model today also have to, you can almost say a challenge for the senses. You should almost be able to go on discovery in a model’s look today. Therefore they’ve to have something else. We’re talking so much about X-factor today, and that’s what you need.

Interviewer: And do you’ve X-factor? Do you wake up in the morning thinking “I’ve X-factor”?

Freja: No, of course not.

Mathias: I don’t like X-factor that much.

Uffe: No, but you’ve to rest in yourself, you’ve to be a real human being, rather than doll. You don’t have to be a model in that sense, like in the 80’s and the 90’s. The things have changed.

Interviewer: There’s something more. There have to be more personality?

Uffe: You’ve to, yes, and if you don’t rest in yourself and if you haven’t experienced some things and so on. I don’t know, I know you’ve.

Freja: Yes, we’ve.

Interviewer: Mathias, how did you get in to it, how did you start your modeling career?

Mathias: Uhm, I actually started it as I think most of the boys start it. It’s not the same dream for boys, as I assume it is for girls. It’s not that princess-dream. Most boys start out with being asked, approached by someone, who asks if you want this to be a living way for you.

Interviewer: We’ve actually found the first model picture taken of you. It should come on the screen now. In a second.

How did that happen? You dad was involved, right? He says, “you look good kid, you should go in and get some pictures taken”? How did it happen?

Uffe: I can actually remember you having that hair.

Mathias: I remember it too. It has never been longer.

Freja: It’s very cute.

Uffe: He’s a very cute girl

Interviewer: Freja, you’re 20 years old now, and there are these lists over the hottest or the best models in the world. And Mathias you’re number 1, and you’ve been that for a while. And Freja you’re number 11. How did you get involved in all this?

Freja: I was stopped on the street on Gammel Kongevej (In English: Old King’s Road). Uhm, and I thought: “well, then”.

Interviewer: Someone could see that there were some Beha Erichsen genes that could be used for something.

Freja: Yes exactly. And then I thought “Well, then, why not? I’ve to try that”. And that’s what I’ve been doing ever since. And it went quite well.

Interviewer: And you haven’t regretted?

Freja: I’ve never regretted that.

Interviewer: You’ve never regretted that?

Freja: Never!

Interviewer: Is it a good life being a model? Many dream about, and think that, that must be the best thing in the world. Is it the best in the world?

Freja: Well, I like it. I think it’s a lovely job.

Mathias: I’m certainly not unhappy, but it’s probably not the job people necessarily imagine it to be when they think that it would be the best in the world. But I’m also very happy about my job.

Freja: Yes.

Mathias: I also value the freedom the job offers.

Interviewer: It’s not necessarily the most long lasting job in the world.

Freja: It’s probably not.

Mathias: No.

Interviewer: How long can you last as a model?

Freja: Well, I’m planning on lasting as long as I can. Uhm as long as there is something to do. And then you probably find something else to do afterwards, I assume.

Interviewer: Yes, life is fortunately long.

Freja: That’s exactly what it is.

Interviewer: Listen, congratulations on the awards, and thank you for stopping by.

Uffe, Freja & Mathias: Thank you. You’re welcome.

I was reading a magazine last night and my best friend who isn't in to fashion at all was reading it with me...While looking at a ed with Mathias Lauridsen she said: "Hm...oh, he went to our school...what was his name...? Mathias I think"---And I was like ... "WUUAT?!!"...

And she said: "Yearh...we used to tease him and he once stole my mittens and hit them and I started crying..." ...I now only remember him vaguely..but as far as I remember he was very...Well, in danish it's called a pop-guy...you can say preppy and shy...and had bad skin...

Next week I will visit my school and see if I can borrow the class photograpy of his year and then scan it...hihi-..so FUNNY!!!
