As to Leo /Durban :

It could be he is attending , but the article had the time of his arrival wrong , as the event begins today and lasts for two weeks.

Or as we've seen happen in past, the information that he was attending was inaccurate from the start.

Also if it is true that Gatsby filming is behind schedule , then it would seem to me that it would be difficult for him to take time off during the work week for several days. It could be he will arrive on a weekend.

Yes Oxford I also had my doubts at the beginning, because, why he would make that his friend fly 24 hours to go to sydney just for the weekend? Unless he thought to bring them with him...

A-list celebs fly in for Cop17

Angelina Jolie, U2's Bono, Leonardo DiCaprio, CNN founder Ted Turner, billionaire businessman Richard Branson, World Bank president Robert Zoellick and UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon are expected in Durban on Tuesday.

They will join actor and former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, former US vice-president Al Gore, New York mayor Michael Bloomberg and a number of heads of state at the UN 17th Conference of Parties (Cop17), which will run from Monday to December 9.

A list of confirmed A-list celebrities has not been released.

Jolie will attend the conference in her capacity as a UN goodwill ambassador.

Durban city council speaker Logie Naidoo yesterday confirmed DiCaprio's attendance.

DiCaprio, a passionate environmentalist who drives a hybrid car, highlighted the issue of global warming by producing, co-writing and narrating the documentary 11th Hour.

Some parts of King Shaka International Airport will be limited to COP17 visitors to reduce overcrowding when an expected 15000 delegates and 10000 observers arrive in Durban.

A strong police presence, mounted on bicycles and on foot, is expected.

So... know that he will be there, but don't know when :idk:

Interview with a young Jay Gatsby :)

Question: What’s it like to take on such a classic American story that’s as iconic as The Great Gatsby is? Was it a novel that you had read and were familiar with, or did you read it because of this role?

CALLAN McAULIFFE: At least for me, whenever I read something in school that a teacher tells me to read for a school assignment, I absolutely hate it. I loathe it. Amongst other books, Gatsby was one of the ones that teachers would tell us to read for a school assignment, and I hated it. I ended up reading it, of my own accord, outside of school, and I absolutely loved it. I guess, whenever a teacher tells you to do something, you automatically dislike it. I’ve read it a couple of times since then, and I’ve enjoyed it.

Is this version of it still the classic story that people know and love, or does it also have some changes that you think will surprise people?

McAULIFFE: I think there are going to be some changes that surprise people. There’s a fairly essential change that I think people will appreciate, compared to some of the other Gatsby films that have been made. But, overall, it’s the classic Gatsby.

With something like this, do you think it’s important to stay relatively true to the source material?

McAULIFFE: I think it’s important to stay true to the material, but at the same time, there’s no point in making another one, if you’re not going to change things up a little bit.

How did you come to be a part of this film?

McAULIFFE: It was just an audition for me. I did a couple of auditions for it, and then they told me that they liked me. Then, I just had to fly down [to Australia], and we’re here now. But, it was a fairly standard audition process. I can’t remember anything out of the ordinary or unorthodox happening.

What can you say about your role in the film?

McAULIFFE: I play the young Jay Gatsby, so I’m not on camera as much as everyone else. They’re quite a ways through the principal photography, and I do my shooting in the next couple of weeks. So, it’s a relatively small part, in the scheme of things, but it’s a fantastic part for me to have and I’m looking forward to it. I play the young Gatsby, and it’s about the guy who helps Gatsby come from an impoverished little kid and become the rich bastard that he is, in the end. It’s the first time he says, “Old sport,” as well. It introduces that catch phrase that Gatsby has.

Could you ever have imagined that you’d be playing a younger version of Leonardo DiCaprio? Have you ever thought that you look like him, at all?

McAULIFFE: No, I honestly don’t think I look like him at all, but to each their own. Baz [Luhrmann] can have that opinion, and I’m glad that he does. He’s a very talented man, so I’m going to trust his instincts. But, I can’t see him in me, at all.

Are you working with Leo at all, in developing this character, since you’re playing the same role, or are you doing it independently?

McAULIFFE: It’s all very spontaneous, at the moment. I’ve watched a couple of his films, but the only times we really talked were at the cast read-through. And, of course, actors never talk about acting with each other. They just have a relaxed, regular conversation, which is what we did. We just talked about life.

Baz Luhrmann is obviously a very visionary director. Is he someone that you were looking to work with, or wanting to work with?

McAULIFFE: There’s no director or actor that I want to work with more than anyone else, other then maybe Johnny Depp, who I really would love to work with. I don’t view any directors or actors above regular people, so I’m just happy to work with anyone, as long as they have talent.

Were you surprised that you would be shooting such a classic American story in Australia?

McAULIFFE: It’s a little bit ironic. We thought the two films I’d done previously warranted moving to the United States, and then the next two American films I’m doing are in Australia. It’s a little bit odd.

callan-mcauliffe-image-02Since The Great Gatsby isn’t something you’d automatically think of being in 3D, but it’s being shot in 3D, what are your thoughts about filming it in 3D and what do you think that will add to the experience for audiences?

McAULIFFE: I haven’t seen a 3D film, to date, that has been more impressive then when it’s not in 3D. I remember seeing Avatar, and I preferred the non-3D version. In this case, Baz wheeled in a TV at the cast read-through and had us all put on some 3D glasses, and we all had a look at one of the mock-up scenes that they’d filmed, and it was actually quite nice. It really added this third dimension to it. It added some depth and some of the colors were more vibrant. It’s really interesting to see what will come of this. As far as I can tell, just by the movies that I’ve seen, it hasn’t made that much of a difference. But, I’m sure Baz has got something in mind and that it will turn out all right. In a movie like How to Train Your Dragon, it was fantastic because it was built, from the ground up, for 3D. What’s good about what Baz is doing is that, as opposed to just slapping on the 3D as an after-effect at the end, to make more money, he is shooting with 3D cameras, much like some of the films that shoot for 3D IMAX.

Comment about Leo and the Oscars.

Good Actors, Bad Movies, and the Oscars

My Week With Marilyn provides a good case in point. The film is an amiable but formless waft through a 1950s British film set. It is a good-natured, but not particularly well-thought-out, period piece—heavy on the art design, light on the plot construction—that generally typifies an HBO movie these days. The film flops and bounces around, and at the center of it sits Michelle Williams dressed up in platinum wig and beauty mark doing Marilyn Monroe. In the Best Picture category, My Week With Marilyn is on no one’s list of Oscar contenders. The performance is on everyone

Across the ring in the actors’ category sits Leo DiCaprio, now an Oscar veteran with three nominations under his belt, looking for his first win. His film J. Edgar sat near the top of most lists right up until the moment when pundits actually saw the film, at which point its buzz plummeted to oblivion. Nonetheless, critics emerged from the film very impressed that Leo had turned in a compelling performance as the manic FBI director. With him hyperventilating and desk-pounding his way through the movie, it is certainly the most animated performance on the prospective Best Actor roster this year (a list that includes George Clooney’s depressive turn in The Descendants and French actor Jean Dujardin’s silent one in The Artist). It is compelling and memorable, but it is, sadly for Leo, entirely at odds with director Clint Eastwood's micro-stated tone.

New York Critics Awards

The "Artist" backed by Harvey Weinstein won for BP which is no surprise given Weinstein's reputation when it comes to garnering awards for his films /stars.

The Best Actor win went to Brad Pitt for Moneyball which assures that Pitt will get an Oscar nod.

The Best Actress win went to Meryl Streep for Iron Lady and again assures her of Oscar nod.

Thanks for all the great pix /gifs , as well as, tweets /movie blog link :)

As to Durban/Leo, yes the article that I last posted stated that his attendance had been verified ; but at same time it said he was due to arrive Tues 11/29. So we'll just have to wait and see :)

As to Daily Beast/Oscar article, personally, I don't agree at all with writer'd viewpoiny. I think a performance should be judged on the quality of the performance not on the film as a whole. As the writer thinks because the film J Edgar has not been an overall critical success that DiCaprio's performance should than not be considered for Oscar contention.

However ,it should be noted that his suggestion happened after actors l Marion Cottilard / Phillp Seymour Hoffman / Jeff Bridges all won acting Oscars for film that were, also, not critical darlings

Suddenly now we should change that ; quite telling that he is serving someone behind the scenes agenda.

Also, apparently the NY critics who awardedMeryl Streep BA didn't heed his suggestion , since from what I've read her performance is excellent , but the film is a mixed bag like J Edgar.

Also, thanks, for Gatsy /McAuliffe interview :)

My God! Best Actor Brad Pitt for Moneyball??? What happens to the world???

I swear if Brad wins before Leo....I will like....rip up tabloids with his face on them! LMAO. But, I will.

I'd rather George or Matt Damon or someone else win over Leo than Brad Pitt. What will Brad bring his kids to the award show so they can be photographed? ARGH!

Thanks Princess for the gifs and tweets! :) Now only If they would take a dang picture :/

Ox: Thanks for the brad/meryl info, and the info about the durban.

The winner of the NY BA doesn't always win the Oscar BA, but for sure this win makes Pitt a BA nomination lock .

Also I've noticed some award watchers feel that Pitt's win was due to him playing the lead in two films the group liked a lot : Moneyball & Tree of Life.

Unfortunately the group doesn't state who were their '5' top contenders for the award , as even though Leo may not have won, it would be good news to hear he was one of their top five .

I Know but you have to admit that there were better candidates to win.

Seriously I can't stand him... Him or Angelina. They are so annoying. Always complaining of being pressured by the media but they go to every event together as gum. Like if she or hi were afraid that someone might steal him/her...

They want privacy but exposed to them and their children at all times. For them all is a red carpet even a visit to the zoo. My God!

Always talking about his private life in every interview and giving intimate details of their sex life. Why???

+1 zillion. I totally agree! Hate that when celebs complain about people being so interested in their personal life, then always go super public with their partner :x

But I will say, I do believe both of them are good actors (Angelina is the better of the two.)

Kat I also believe that Angelina is good actress, but I think that she's so overexposed since Brad, and the adoptions, and their 300 kids that people don't pay attention to that anymore.

Brad is just an eye candy, well... used to be but good actor :/

If you recall I saw Brad Pitt in Moneyball, and, personally, I would not have awarded him any award , as to me, he was Brad playing Brad.

But when I saw Leo get no Oscar recognition for RR and SI , it was painfully obvious that award nominations and terrific performances don't necessarily go hand in hand. :( :(

I SO AGREE! Shes always been strange, and done weird things, but the press got crazy on her after the whole brad-jen thing.

Anywho about Brad, I also agree. Hes a decent actor. Hes never really blown me away, but hes never been bad either.

Ox: Shutter Island and Revolutionary Road were some of leos best performances. He really deserved AT LEAST a nomination for those two roles.
